I think Columbine made it worse because now the administrators are going apeshit over every little thing - turning the schools into a sort of police state.

Couldn't agree with you more. I was a victim of that insanity in middleschool. I was a rather touchy kid, so when a bunch of guys started making fun of me while at the same time talking about guns, I snapped and made a rather moronic comment. I didn't actually mean to say it, and tried immediately to take it back, but it was too late. The kids ran up to the office laughing because they knew as well as I did how much trouble I was going to be in.

Given the hysteria at the time, a mention of being depressed along with stupid comment I made was enough to get me suspended and sent to three psychologists to make sure I was "safe" to go back to school. They even had the nerve to tell me that they knew I wasn't dangerous, and that they were simply doing this because of "policy".

I think it's rather frightening that a country that so easily becomes hysterical about things (school violence, terrorism, etc) also has the worlds most powerful military. That many nuts on top of that many bombs really just isn't a good situation.

While you may not lose sleep over a buck a track, think about someone who just got an iPod and doesn't have a large music collection. All of a sudden they have the ability to carry 5000 songs around with them. They didn't have that before. They liked a lot of different kinds of music, but at $20 a cd, couldn't afford it. They see iTunes and think "Hey, a buck a song ain't bad", so they start downloading. $50 in, they realize they have a ton more stuff they want (not crap, stuff they actually like), and not a lot more money. What to do?

In this hypothetical situation (which is actually rather common), this person is going to spend several thousand dollars filling up a $300 device. I don't know about you, but that just doesn't seem right to me.

It would be kinda the same thing as if I stole a penny from 1.6 billion people. Collectively, I did a lot of damage, however, the amount of damage I really did was next to nothing. Think of it, if any person added up all the times they hurt someone physically over their lifetime, one could make a case that the cumulative damages would be akin to murder. Making his sentence based totally on the cumulative damages is ridiculous. He should be punished, no doubt about it. But let's put things in perspective. Murderers get less time than that.

I would find it quite an interesting undertaking to come up with an AI that could survive in normal conversation. Some group should set up a competition like DARPA for conversational AI, or start an opensource project for it.

Hell, maybe someday AI will replace telemarketers. Then you won't feel quite so bad about playing jokes or hanging up on them (I know some of you don't feel bad about it already, but you have to understand that some of the people are just desperate for money and that's the only job they have).

What I was pointing out was not that all the good games are FPS, but that assuming that the Xbox 360 will be a flop is a pretty naieve view. I know there are other games besides Halo. I just happen to have more experience with the popularity of Halo. It also happens to hold the record for initial video game sales (yes I know GTA: San Andreas sold more overall on the PS2 ).

Besides, if Sony liscensed the Unreal 3 engine, and Unreal Tournament 2007 is due in 2006, why would they release it in 2007? It just doesn't make any sense.

  15. Focusing on Hollywood Going Digital and 3D · · Score: 1
One problem I've encountered while watching 3D movies is focusing. For example, I watched an IMAX 3D presentation of the Internation Space Station. For the most part, the technique worked. However, at one point an orange in the ISS came floating straight towards the camera. It was completely out of focus, and was quite an eyesore. It literally hurt to look at it. That's one problem I see with 3d movies. If objects are out of focus and close up, it will hurt to look at them.

Now you can simply not look at the object, but in several circumstances, the being out of focus is intentionally used.

I really hope they take this to heart, because despite what they might think is cheaper, the movie will end up more realistic if they simply use two cameras.

  16. Re:Don't let the state nany, take some responsibil on Senator Carper Calls for Tax on Online Porn · · Score: 1
Although I do agree with you on the fact that people in the U.S. are way to sensitive on the subject of sex, I would like to point out a few areas in which I think your suggestions go over the line.

The Christian faith (who's political wing is the Republican party) for some reason believe that sex is bad and that pornography is somehow immoral.

Christians don't believe that sex is bad. If you for some reason actually believe this you've been talking to the wrong people. However, they do believe that pornography is wrong. Now, first off, by porn, I don't mean a short scene in a movie tastefully depicting sex. No. I mean stuff where the plot of the clip or movie is really just filler and the entire point is to watch other people having sex. Christians have a problem with this not because of the act, but because it treats the people like objects. They are attractive and the fuck each other, and you get to watch. That's the point. It treats sex like something you do only because it feels good, just like cocaine or heroin, and something that should only be done with supermodels. Christianity views sex as something that happens between two people who love each other. Porn completely takes out the love factor and reduces the other person to the level of a drug you get your jollies off. I think most people would agree that treating another person like an object is immoral.

Now I believe that trying to get the government to tax and regulate porn is ridiculous. In no way is taxing porn going to keep kids away from it. If you really don't want your kids watching porn, why not take a look at tv and movies. Some of what is shown really is almost on the level of softcore porn. And you wonder why kids are watching porn? Give me a break.

You may not agree with abortion or gay marriage but believing in freedom is about having the maturity to realize that the people who are gay or have abortions are consenting adults and are fully aware of the consequences of their actions.

Just to clear up one thing there. Christians view unborn children as human beings in their own right. They just haven't been born. So, for a Christian, abortion is akin to murder. People who are for abortions don't see unborn children as separate human beings. So it's not that Christians don't believe you have to right to do with your body what you wish, it's that they believe that it's not really your body you're dealing with. Hope this clears things up a bit.

I can see RAID being useful for businesses where they want as little downtime as possible, but is there really any point in buying more hard drives when you can get the same effect with DVDs or the upcoming BluRay and HD-DVDs? You can cite performance as an advantage using RAID 0, but as has been shown, there really isn't any.
