man I don't know if anyone saw that intro video on the "experience it" page but god damn that was a waste of production time. i was hoping to see some cool interaction and screenshots but instead it was a bunch of Getty Image Worthy kids mouthing the words "wow" quite frequently.. that alone doesn't make me want to download this crap and whore'up my computer.
regardless of what some are saying about this article being more about advertising, the hard drive recovery process is very interesting and something people should take the time to learn about. Not cheap by any means, but I will say that I am a DriveSavers partner and their work is superb. For being a reseller/partner they give you 10% of the data recovery fee for anyone you refer. And on top of that, they also give your customer a 10% discount as well for the referral. Well worth it for those people who drop their laptops in the ocean or those careless DJs that have the tendancy to spill their beers. Not to mention they can recover encrypted data and respect people's privacy. Mostly government agencies. And I mean c'mon, they rescued JIMMY FREAKIN BUFFET'S DATA! Now THAT'S saying something!!! well.. maybe they shouldn't of done that.. we could have dealt with one less Jimmy Buffet album.. damnit why the hell did you recover that data!!
this confuses me. you'd expect this article to mention a lot of awesome subnotebooks/cheap laptops considering it says "everything from the EEE to the OLPC".. matter of fact it ONLY mentions those two products and that's it.. there is no in between because frankly nobody else is coming up with a cheap laptop besides these two.. i'm pissed at Asus because they said their EEE was going to be $200.. i followed them till the day they released the damn things.. and I know $100 more isn't much, but I'd rather buy a cheap Acer for $300 @ Walmart, format it and put Ubuntu on it.. it'd come with a bigger hard drive and more RAM for the price.. even though Acer sucks of course.. I really do hope that SOME company actually pulls through with a $200 MAX laptop that is completely flash/ssd based and comes with all the goodies.. until then, it's still just hype and I'm tired of hearing it..
same goes with me. 11 years ago is when I started using Slackware. i think it was the good old 2.0.36 days. it felt like I truly accomplished something just by getting it to install on my 486 with a Pentium Overdrive chip in it. Giving me an awesome 83mhz. ran like a champ. Back then however, there wasn't entirely too much to distinguish the difference between the distros. of course package management was one of them, but it seems to me that I didn't even start caring about binary packages until Debian showed me the way packages *should* be handled in the early 2000's. but regardless, Slackware was a pretty decent robust distro back in the day. but I think I'll give more credit to the 2.0.x kernel and ipfwadm in particular.
I personally have found Drupal to be pretty confusing. I'm no web expert by any means, but from an average-joe designer standpoint, it was very difficult for me to use and figure out. Joomla wasn't too bad for the most part. The administrator section was a lot easier to use, but of course a wee bit of documentation was necessary to figure out certain things. I'm personally looking for an incredibly easy to use CMS that is meant specifically for people with really simple websites. I came across CMSMS (CMS Made Simple) and it was pretty nice all things considered. I could imagine myself customizing the CSS to make some cool themes, but most importantly, almost anybody could modify their webpage without having to cycle through tons of options to find what they're looking for. The only problem was that it ran incredibly slow so I ditched it. My server runs other MySQL backend websites without any issues so I'm assuming there's some improperly written queries in the software. I'm curious to know if there's any solution to this, or if there are any other really, and I mean REALLY easy to use CMS's out there. Sounds cheesey, but sometimes we all don't need super-duper CMS sites with advertisement portals and user management. I just want a 5 to 15 page website that the customer can edit themselves that also has a media manager.
There's a couple HUGE arcades here on the boardwalk in Ocean City, Maryland. And they still thrive and thrive thanks the the hundreds of thousands of people that walk on the boardwalk in the summer time. Marty's Playland in particular has a pretty impressive pinball machine collection. It used to be bigger than it is now, but there's at least a good 30 machines or so. My favorite is 'South Park'. That's what I love about modern pinball in particular, is how they've integrated characters from TV shows and movies in to the game. I'm laughing and being entertained. Long live the Pinball machine!:-)
I really don't understand why companies use "archive companies". It's like online backup as well. I don't trust ANYONE with my freakin data. It works simply in our shop. Every morning I take the tape from the day before and put it in my briefcase. I take it home with me so it is offsite. Why didn't the school simply just have a trustful employee take the tapes home with him? taking tapes offsite is definitely a good thing in case the building were to catch fire and whatnot, but christ, what the fuck is an archive company and why would you trust them?
Spencer Wells actually proves how Australia came to inhabit humans in his documentary "The Journey of Man". DNA tracking has indeed proven where we originated thanks to the genetic markings in the male's Y chromosone. in my opinion, it is quite feasible for humans to have migrated to Australia thanks to things like massive draughts in which uncover large amounts of land, making it easy for early humans to almost walk or swim from Asia Pacific Islands to Australia. (same goes for how Indians came to America) I think it is highly unlikely for the predecessors of humans to evolve in to human beings at the same time in other parts of the world. To me it makes more sense that our minds simply evolved thanks to language, the control of fire, strength and innovation.
the best way to piss off the border guard would be to buy a brand spankin new Acer or Toshiba Laptop right out of the box with a Celeron processor, 512mb of RAM, and Windows Vista Home Premium. they'll get so damn tired of waiting it will surely cease their search.
Is it just me, or does Ballmer remind you of the idiot from the TV Show, Coach, who played the character Dauber? Ballmer should be coaching a football team not a freakin software company..
I agree and disagree with some things.. I agree that the Gimp is getting closer and closer to become a more widely used "professional" image manipulation program and will eventually get there, however I think it's great that they are trying to make PS run better in Linux. Reason being is that companies, big companies, especially Google, could save thousands and thousands of dollars on Microsoft OS licensing. The farther we progress with getting PS to run better in Linux, the closer Linux will become to having major software developers create software that will "natively" run in Linux without the help of Codeweavers.
However, I did want to point out that I think it's ridiculous for them to hire Codeweavers. Although I LOVE their work, I think Google needs to be talking with Adobe. Get them to port PS over to Linux so it runs natively.
I beg to differ on the rabbit ears thing. Well, maybe and maybe not. I still use rabbit ears to receive the new DTV signal and at first I did have to do some minor adjusting;-) but you've never seen a grown man more excited to get about 4 new channels that he's never had before, and for free.
but I wanted to add BASIC programming to the list of obsolete tech skills. for a long time it was the only way to even operate your computer. If I could only get $100,000 for being a BASIC programmer nowadays, that'd be freakin awesome. screw these object oriented languages! just kidding, they're just too hard for me..
this is why you buy the Vostro instead. i'm so sick and tired of these hardcore laptops that people waste their money on and it simply breaks or shocks or catches on fire. if you absolutely need a portable machine for something business related, then jesus christ. just buy a god damn Vostro, get the 3 Year NBD warranty with on-site support, and you'll then start to realize why Dell is actually a good computer company..
well, i'm sure people could debate all day on what formats sound the best. the bottom line with vinyl is that its outdated and cheap.. I personally love going to the thrift shop and pickin up 10 records for $10.. plus you end up owning a nice novelty item that can actually be used.. whether its actually listening to the record, reading the humongous over-sized inserts, or just framing it as a cool piece of art work.. but i dont really think it sounds *better*.. it has its own unique sound that some people are looking for.. use it for what its worth, dont over-hype it because I don't want records appreciating in value.. it's the last thing the RIAA needs..
actually, no I don't.. I believe the people with money should pay to help make their country a better place.. not sit in your own filthy money and die with it not making the human race evolve in any sort of way..
totally! and Linux is like Tom Bombadil.. Master of the Wood..

yes, but does it run Linux?

would someone please modify the GPL to say "Anyone can use this code unless you are Microsoft"

Since WHEN does Earthlink know ANYTHING about providing good service for the public?
Well Nigeria, I guess you don't get any money then.
