It seems pretty irresponsible to release details on an exploit when the vendor has already acknowledged the issue and has a date planned on when to release the fix. Now if Apple was ignoring them, that would have been a different story.
However, you can't (legally) use a store-bought version of MacOS without, at some stage, having paid for a "full version" - and Apple knows this. Ergo, they price all copies as an "upgrade".
Why not? Show me in the license agreement where it says that you must have OS X installed for the full version. The upgrade version has a special part of the installation that checks for Jaguar, but that is only for the $19.95 version.
It is an "upgrade" price. Every version of MacOS is priced as an "upgrade", because you can't (legally) use it without already have paid "full price" for MacOS at some stage.
Wrong. The only Panther upgrades are the $19.95 versions being shipped to G5 users and Mac users who purchased after the shipping announcement. The box version is the full version and says nothing about requiring an older version.
I don't think AOL should have to bear the burden of fixing users' machines. I knew when I read an article on this yesterday that/. would spin it as A Bad Thing, but AOL and all the other ISPs are tired of all the MS vulnerabilities that arrive each week.
I understand that it does not set a good precident. With the AOL/Apple marketing plan, perhaps Apple will spin a few ads on their other products (remember those?) besides iTMS.
This is not the same thing. IP portability is not necessary because of DNS. If there was a DNS-like system for phone numbers, it wouldn't matter what my phone number was, someone could call me. Barring issues with people with the same name, DNS functionality would be cool.
great, so pressing the shift key is a violation of the dmca. perhaps apple will bring back the command-. to kill an errant process, someone will find that you can use that to break an encryption, then we wont be able to use periods anymore either of course that will fit right in here 8/
Once again, Apple releases a product whose packaging is almost as desireable as the contents inside! Now if only they would update the Powerbook 15" line.
I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression that you cannot buy iDVD -- it must ship on the computer you purchased (which presumably features the hardware that is required to use it).
No piracy necessary. Just buy iLife, which includes iDVD. The latest update, 3.0.1, now also lets you run iDVD without a Superdrive, but you still cannot burn.
Crapple hasn't even figured how to stick PgUp/PgDn on their laptops, much less a second mouse button.
To each his own. This was one of my favorite features of the Powerbook when I moved to the Mac. Press the Fn key then left/right becomes home/end and up/down becomes pgup/pgdn. Much better than hunting all over the keyboard for the locations of those keys, as every PC laptop keyboard I have used puts them in a different spot.
Personally I don't like the idea of having the "shortcuts" to the left like in windows xp. I'm pretty sure it's just something Apple created so windows switchers would feel at home.
Actually, I think it is to make iTunes users feel more at home. Instead of playlists, you have aliases to popular items.
Went to a school auction last week and bought 3 Apple IIe's, 20 Mac LC III's, 2 Quadra 610's, and a bunch of matching monitors. Total cost: $27.07. Now I just need some ideas on what to do with them!
I have a PC at home that I don't use. If I installed Mandrake 9.1 and attached a printer to it, would my PowerBook see it using Rendezvous and be able to print to it? How would I set this up on the Mandrake side?
This would be great and wonderful if people didn't already know about KaZaA/WinMX/Gnutella/etc. As much as you say "Hey, we've changed! Songs are cheap now and you can get them from home!" there will always be those people who say "That's great... but I can still get the same songs for free.". Frustrating to say the least.
Yeah you can get them for free, if your connection doesn't drop and you can sit through downloading from a modem user. Apple owns a stake in Akamai. Those downloads will be flying.

No, no, it's "do you want tunes with that?" :)
Yeah but it's missing all of the space sounds! What a ripoff! ;)

What about AppleWorks? Oh who am I kidding. :)
MacNN has live coverage of the announcement.

Houston, Texas, home of the NASA Johnson Space Center, Compaq, and the Astrodome. There's also a Fry's, Microcenter, and an Apple Retail Store. :)

It's called NTBUGTRAQ, not NTBUGFIX.

Most albums are $9.90 or $9.99 if bought as a complete album. There are some exceptions (Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon for one).
Is that a Cinco de Mayo joke? :D

No, they will rebrand it and it will be called Red Hat X 10.0. :)
Mac OS X does not use extensions. That is OS9.
Apple also released today an Xserve Cluster Node that has no graphics card and starts at $1000 than the high-end Xserve.
ReUnited Linux! And it feels so goooood. ReUnited Linux! Cause it's understoood...
