Yeah, welcome to Washington State. Home of awesome apples and the many church-ies. Just the other day in my town I saw a bunch of 'em from the local "community" church waving anti-gay R-71 (say "no" to gay rights or whatever). It's just unbelievable.
Yeah, and at this point I'm left with the feeling like I'm playing one of those carnival games. You know, guess which one isn't the idiot. But the joke is on us, because they're ALL idiots. And people wonder why I don't like political parties...
I used to think that it was a good idea, up until I saw it go horribly wrong on my friend's laptop. The thing bluescreened, then wiped out all partitions on his HDD, including his EXT3 linux partition, and the contents of his flashdrive were completely gone. He couldn't recover ANY of the data he lost. And last I checked, he's still having troubles with the MBR and grub.
I know, this is anecdotal, but I thought at least one or two people would like to know that Microsuck still has a ways to go before their little feature is usable.
Livna hasn't been added officially as a Fedora Core Extra, so you still have to add it in FC6; you can be sure that it runs well though. I've added it for a few goodies, including ndiswrapper and it all works just fine so far. I've had it up and running for about a month now.
Indeed. I was taking CIS 224 in college last quarter (Network Server Administration), and I was having some trouble grasping some things of DNS. So I went to Wikipedia, and I was surprised at how much useful information that it had there. It helped me understand most of what it's all about. Here's the link if you want to see it for yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name_system
History, DNS in practice, DNS standards, Internationalized domain names, DNS politics, etc. If that isn't good reference, I don't know what is.
I agree, though my biggest fear is this: they are given the laptops, but not shown how to use them, or inspired to learn more. Even most people here in the U.S. see the computer as an end, not as a means, very unfortunately. Damn you, Microsoft, for putting planting the idea of having a computer just for the sake of having one.
Okay, rant over. Let's hope we can take that into account when we deliver the things, eh?
My problem with accomodating the blind is this: I absolutely HATE sites that make all sorts of unnecessary sounds. The last thing I want is anything but my music or sounds from games coming out of my speakers. Honestly, think about it: you're surfing over to newegg while listening to something soft (in the middle of the night) when all of a sudden you hear "WELCOME TO NEWEGG!" blaring out of your speakers. I would never EVER visit that site again.
I've got about 4 or 5 different friends that have gone through two PS2's at least. I can't say I've ever gone through a system myself, though I've never owned anything other then SEGA/Nintendo. I guess it goes to show you that sometimes the simple designs are the best.
Well, I was a bit too advanced for the classes that I took in middle school. I actually got bored with the repetitive homework (100 problems a night with the same procedure), and stopped trying. It really wasn't until 8th grade that I began to work toward better grades.
Either way, I didn't come out a retard or anything. In fact, I'm now working toward an Associates in I.T.
Goes to show that just because the kid's grades suck doesn't always mean that they're A.D.D. or stupid, or that anything is wrong with them. That, I've seen way too much of: parents plugging their kids with meds of all kinds to "fix" them.
Yeah, but the bigger problem with criminal cases is that even if you're just accused of commiting a crime (not proven or anything), you're still socially considered a criminal for some stupid reason. And obviously, alienated a bit.
The real solution IMHO would be to teach the students to see the computer/laptop as a means, not an end; a tool, not a toy. If we figured out how to do that effectively, I don't see any reason why having laptops for students would be a bad idea. Until then, I say stick with what we got already.
Yeah. All I gotta say to the government is this: Good luck enforcing that law. For every site you ban, many others like it pop up almost instantly. That is the beauty of the internet: as hard as anyone tries, even China. They cannot truly censor it the way they'd like to.
So yeah, regardless of whatever laws are imposed, I doubt they can completely cover the whole net. There are just WAY too many sites out there.
In Washington state, they've banned smoking in all public restaurants, as well as smoking within 25 feet of their entrances (though I've yet to see the latter enforced well). I think it's a good idea, though. That way I can enjoy the restaurant like everyone else without the risk of lung cancer.
Um. That's not nude. That's topless. A set of boobs that needs a hack to unlock IMHO isn't part of the game and therefore shouldn't be treated as such. But unfortunately, I'm not the ESRB.
If nothing else, I guess you could always go back to 56k dialup. It's not horrible, really. I used 28.8k up until about 2 years ago. I guess that's the only alternative at the moment.
The A+ certification seems to be the requirement to get hired as a technician anyhwere these days. More or less, it's become the high school deploma of IT.
Yeah, keep saying that to yourself. Just like the 2 screens of the DS were a gimmick. Hey, I thought that, too until my younger sister picked up one and I got to see what it was really like. Nintendo knows what they're doing.
But honestly, free screensavers, games and lyrics? I think most of slashdot here knows that those kind of sites are laden with spyware and the like. Well, I can see lyrics now that I think about it, but still.
I absolutely love working with computers and people, but I know I can't just be a fill-in-the-blank admin or anything.
Hence, I go to the local college, working on my bachelor's in Applied Science: Information Technology and Administrative Management. It's not a CS degree, but it's much better than being just A+ and net+ certified. And it's not just computer courses, either; I'll also be taking some business courses as well.
The D&D portable hole! Literally 6 feet wide and 10 feet deep. It's loaded with chests and stuff so you don't have to carry it around on your back. And you can access it whenever you wish.
OR you could just buy another MMORPG that doesn't require monthly subcriptions, such as Guild Wars. Even cheaper. Y'know, I'd say about a third (rough estimate) of games with online compatibility require some regular subscription.
Yes, but a TON of people out there don't update at all, let alone semi-regularly, so this is still relevant, IMHO.

"But I was downloading pr0n and games, you insensitive clod!"

Um. User mods are encouraged by Bethesda, as they should be in all games IMHO. Seriously the ESRB should stop rating games by their usermods.

I think it'll be a bit hard to outsource that.

The only complaint I have about it is the fact that the D-pad is about half the size of a Super NES D-pad.
