I know it's a couple of light years from this but it'd be awesome to see a combination of a solaris open cpu / fpga card. Then your computer would truly be yours.
Since actual detection of a planetary spectrum is yet to be achieved, it's all still guess work. But it would be fun to imagine what kind of compromises biology would have to make in high gravity planets, that is if they made it beyond single cell organism stage. Even then, life would to have to find a way to deal with the increased amount of elements on a super earth.
766.189627 exabytes of data, which seems suspicious to me since the Internet Archive only has roughly between 4 and 8 petabytes I believe. Of course I could be wrong. But even if they ARE approaching a zetabyte, something that would set a world record, you have to wonder how they are managing all that data.
I'm not trying to be emo here, but I'd like to share a point of view. I commited some serious crimes, nothing as light as parody. BUT the Juvenile Correction Facilities I was sentenced to were no better then unregulated pow camps. I'd go to bed listening the screams of my fellows, Some deserved the tackle, others were merely pissed off and ended up pissing off the "counselor". And fyi, you don't need anything more then a high school degree to become a counselor, you take a few classes and your done. Sure, you can try to report abuses, but you run the risk of retaliation. My first visit to the "control room" still haunts me to this day. Getting your head slammed repeatedly into a cement floor with a wax finish isn't something your easily forget. The tiles probally still have my sweat stains, it took about a hour to subdue me. Roughly 5 guys, I was pretty messed up at that time. I'm not sure if this is the exception rather then the rule. I was at a nice facility before that, Less restricted. But I met others where chemical control was distributed because you refused to call someone sir. Coming out of that, i was completely messed up. It's taken years for me to recover, I'm still haunted by nightmares occasionally. So, next time you assume its all join a circle and share your feelings, consider the alternative.
A basic search will turn up a lot of licenses, how can you be so lazy that you can't type something into Google but are able to submit a Slashdot story?
True, but what would you prefer, hardware leveling plus a file system that wasn't made to do media like this or hardware leveling plus software leveling with specific intent to help extend the medias lifespan?
It might be able to use jffs2 or something similar, that way you have wear leveling for your SD media. I am not a Dev, but that would be a interesting feature. As far as I know exfat, fat 16 and fat32 have no wear leveling capabilities. Since its a fairly expensive purchase I'd assume you wouldn't want your files going poof one day because of SD card dying too quickly from too many rewrites. Just a idea, the other idea would be depending on just how much leeway your allowed, batteries, space constraints not being a issue, and if your have a constant wifi signal, you could have a script constantly upload your new files to a server. Maybe like a really tiny ftp server to upload the files. A great example would be if your out on a job with a wifi signal, have a server at home listen for a specific port and when the camera logs in automaticly check for new files.
Why the hell would you want to smell concentrated trolls? Can you imagine the last time they left their computers? I mean, gawds, my eyes BURN thinking about it!:p
Just pick a random day far in the future, And have it countdown to that day with the words, Only (insert time) until it happens! Then refuse to tell anyone what it means. It should provide interesting conversations at the water cooler.
There was a episode of Metalocyplse that portrayed the band Dethklok making metal music for fish. The song it self is "Go into the water", if you want to research it. It just seems so weird that someone would being doing something like this in real life.
Have a background proccess block certain activities based on the time of day. I know this could lead to the kids trying to move the clock forward but you could probably set it to sync with the ntp equivelent or password protect the clock process. Then send home a sheet alerting the parents to the restrictions and give them the option to unlock the laptop. Therefore your not legally responsible for any activities that may or may not happen on temporary school property. Of course I've never used OSX before so I'm not how you'd implement this. But I believe this would be a way to avoid any conflicts.
Http://www.happypenguin.org Full of interesting LINUX games. Since you mentioned ubuntu cd I thought it might be useful. And Savage 2 is fairly interesting.
I wonder any code base was reused from the older games? And if so, how would that affect those games? It's not uncommon for a company to reuse old software if its allows them to get farther and faster then they normally would if they had to write it from scratch. Even if only in part, Could that code allow others to port Myst to other platforms?
I read about this awhile go ago and thought it was relevant. For those that are still addicted to the Apple I, there is a functional replica with a few extra features. http://www.brielcomputers.com/replica1.html Just thought someone might get a kick out of it.
I'd be interested in seeing if this has a cross-over effect. Since the iPhone is a locked down hardware device with software tied to it that restricts it use. AND if it does apply, what would the cell phone market look like in its aftermath since this describes a large portion of the cell phone market in the United States. (Not sure what it's like outside of this country.)
I love your willingness to defend your point of view. And for you, perhaps, its important to maintain the status quo. But there is a point of no return. And this government has reached that I believe. I may be wrong, but then the irrational vs the rational ruling party has exceeded normal balance. Extremists have gained power to such a extent that I may get what I want in the end. I enjoy stability and would not wish harm on another being. It may seem like apathy, but it is more realism then anything. First, you control the press. Then you control the means of communication. And you continue to consolidate your power base until it rots from within and becomes unsustainable. While I admire your desire to encourage balance, I believe equilibrium has been exceeded. And as such, If I'm right, Then my point of view will have been vetted. And chaos will rein until yet another ruling faction emerges and then fails due to the same arc of corruption. What I may have failed to mention is I want to be the one that sits on the mountain and watches Armageddon. Not because I'm fatalistic, nor because I wish harm upon others. No, I want to watch things end because only then will there be a new beginning. And I enjoy your civil and eloquent responses, so very rare here. But alas I believe our views are irreconcilable. I hope that your world view prevails and mine is merely naive. But only time will tell.
BUT..."The dingo ate my baby!" :p
Legacy hardware :p Da da bump! In all seriousness, its awesome idea that requires alot of effort. But I agree its a worthy attempt.

Especially when it comes to one's own product. It usually just encourages people to find ways to prove you wrong...........
If so, I soooo want a 30 Inch Apple cinema display in it so i can play top gun!
How long before publishers demand a ever increasing amount of fees for this service? They already have problems with the idea of digital distribution.

Because slashdot says so! n.n
Thats actually a fairly interesting idea. There already exists a robot that does automatic brick laying, http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/15/rival-robots-prepping-to-automate-home-building/ The only problem I could see is the abrasiveness of the moondust but I'm sure the idea could be adapated.

I mean, I love the idea behind it. But isn't there regulation on doing this type of research?
