Wasn't there recently a/. article about how an employee who had misused a company laptop (and would have had to have signed a TOS contract) got reinstated because he had signed the contract without reading through it? http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/11/06/12 1246
Granted, it was in Australia and not the US of A, so laws might be different...?
A three year old could have come up with that joke.
"In related news, drsquare has become the new lead joke writer for South Park"............
But yeah, that episode wasn't anything special. Funny, but no more funny than the other South Park episodes... I don't see why this is getting any special attention, I somehow doubt pokemon.com had a thread about that episode way back in the early days about the pokemon episode, because it wasn't anything special, just like the WoW episode.
Wow the USA still uses cheques? I don't know a single person with a chequebook, nor do I know anyone who even knows how to write a cheque. Hell, I work in a store, and I can count the number of people who've paid with cheques on one hand. Don't you need the account number/details to write the cheque to begin with? Why not electronically transfer the funds; even if your bank doesn't support it, there are dozens of other options (Moneygram, PayPal, Western Union etc etc). It's faster and safer than mailing a cheque, and I'm sure people appreciate not having to drive down to the bank and wait in line to cash the cheque (hey, isn't there something about how VHS was inferior because there was no possible way to transfer them apart from physically in an earlier thread?)
Considering most desktops would be XP SP2 (iirc, M$ has a 97% share of the desktop OS market - feel free to correct), I'm surprised that it's only just over half. Most webservers run Linux, but anyone who buys a webserver is probably technically skilled enough (or employs someone who is) to put up a decent firewall and occasionally run some sort of virus scan (although my ISP seems to be a glaring exception, they're still infected with years-old virii).. so considering that it would mainly be desktops, slightly over half is quite impressive.
Besides, MS wouldn't put out a patch as massive as SP2 now that they're devoting their resources to Vista (new Windows OSs put the $ in M$, patches dont)
Uh huh, and you are of course, Jesus? Which makes you exempt from following His rules? He also told many people to "practice forgiveness and compassion.". I believe that the incident where Jesus said those words dozens upon dozens of times would be the most salient example.
Er... you post to and (I assume) continue to visit (if you don't then you won't read this and it won't matter that I'm wrong) a website you are quite clearly disgusted with (slashdot)? Good grief man, what next? Planning to hang out with Bill Gates and his chums? (I gather you are pro-linux from your URL)
Don't get me wrong, you are entitled to your opinion... but it's not like the Slashdot community hides its' agendas - so don't be surprised by the general consensus of an admitedly left-wing crowd.
Right now we have two theories. The earth is warming slightly along with the rest of the solar system, perhaps with some influence from us but it has both warmed and cooled in the past and will almost certainly continue to do both in the future. The other says it is all our fault and will spiral out of control unless we act NOW and only socialism can save us. Occam's razor makes short work of this decision.
Since your post seems to indicate you're right-wing, and right-wing'ers are stereotypically christians (plus you are clearly a man of science), we'll use a little piece of thinking you probably already agree with: Decision Theory (eg, Pascal's Wager). We know:
The cost of acting now (if climate change) == 1% GDP (http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/10/ 29/2055227)
The cost of acting later (if climate change) == 5%-20% GDP (http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/10/ 29/2055227)
The cost of acting now (if no climate change) == (1% GDP)
The cost of acting later (if no climate change) == ($0)
We can see that with with equal odds of climate change then you should be all for stopping climate change. (I know there aren't "odds", and they aren't argueably "equal", but as you said, we need at least 20 years to find out. If there is climate change we don't have 20 years).
Just pretend its choosing between "heads" and "tails" in a coin-toss with heads giving you a $10 losing fee but a $50-$200 payoff and tails giving you a $50-$200 fee if you lose and no payoff if you win.
I've often wondered, could you get speakers that noise cancel in much the same way? I know it'd be next to impossible to get them precisely one(or any integer) away from the source - but perhaps a set of speakers forming a perimeter around the offending object?
when that kid turned 18, they got him thrown in jail. That was fun, too.
I love a happy ending! (No, I'm being serious... damn cyberthugs, making those of us with any sort of computer skills seem like evil spam-kings)
"Most Australians" couldn't care what happens as long as they can stop the darkies getting in.
well that'll always be the dream
thanks for trolling, dont come again soon!
It didn't say in the article, but if I thought of it then they would have... they probably keep the water heated by solar power (either directly heating it up, or with solar panels, first option better only if it's consistently sunny); and the figures they gave (a month) account for that. Or perhaps they use the energy from the waves to help heat the water, and the energy slowly disperses over a month, but that's inefficient.
It's all a guess, but they would be insane not to use solar power to help keep the water heated (hell all they need is a $2 magnifying glass lens).
So the choice is between HARDWARE that doesn't work (nVidia, OT) and SOFTWARE that doesn't work (ATI, PP) (and HARDWARE and SOFTWARE that both work, but neither work very well)?
Well that's an easy one. My *entire* family are change-avert, so I'm used to "but the old one works fine" etc etc etc. It's incredibly annoying when I am forced to just chuck out slightly dated hardware (I *had* an old but good-for-the-time ISA sound card and a handful of ~10gb hard drives) that would work perfectly in their computer (can't sell on ebay, no boxes, i'd only get about $2 for it). Noone else i know has a computer that would be UPGRADED with said outdated hardware. You should just start to say her computer is broken for good and/or will need hardware replaced (therefore will be out of commission for a couple of days), and 'lend' her a mac in the meantime.. she'll either find another hobby (after calling you up and yelling, but that already happens anyway), or get used to macs.. it's probably a little harsh to take your own mothers PC away from her, but it's for both your own goods - good for her security and good for your sanity.
Since TFA says, (paraphrased) "the medium is not at fault for the users' own issues"...does this mean that people with other addictions (eg, alcoholics) are more prone to becoming addicted to say, WoW? Does anyone know if there are lots of incidences of 'cross addiction' (going from one addiction to another)? MMOs are quite different to other sorts of well-known addictions - they typically take place in homes (and not back alleys/casinos/bars/etc).. So if people went from MMO addiction to the other addictions (or the other way around), then it could indicate that environmental pressures have less to do with addiction than suspected.
but IANAP/P/S (i am not a psychiatrist/physcologist/sociologist) so feel free to correct me

Fortunately for you, yours is a single digit so there's no problems
PS. Don't bother posting "Single digit IQ not possible blah blah blah" because I am joking:)
I think it happens everywhere, though. People no longer play games, they game games (i.e. find every loophole and exploit it). I wonder how much actual fun people have when they play this way?
You mean like how in most (video) games you can glitch bots to run into a bottleneck and pick them off one at a time (in shooters->with the terrain, in strats->with walls and dozens of base defences->in rpgs, whoring the infinitely respawning weak bad guys)
Well I need AT LEAST fifty two words! Six isn't enough; I am a slashdot poster, dammit! "Short post" isn't in my vocabulary (mainly because I can't use it as obscure jargon to back up my ridiculous opinions - they can't disagree with me if they don't know what on earth I'm saying).
I might pay to see them set $200 million in $100 denominations on fire! How long will it take to burn up 2 million $100 bills?
And since you're probably not the only one who would want to see that (hell, if people only ever wanted to watch something original and interesting, the box offices would be deserted), they can use the money they make from the original and make a sequel! It's a neverending cycle* that will ruin the economy with anti-inflation! hurrah!
*Until people get bored of the sequels.

You'd need to still let the sunlight IN, to heat the water, to make the air humid.... one way mirrors perhaps?
oh slashdot people, you forget. People might oppose this simply to be beligerent!
