  1. Re:Doesn't work with Firefox 2.0.0.1 on Windows XP on IE and Firefox Share a Vulnerability · · Score: 1

Very true. First time I tried it, it got as far as c:bo and stopped cos I was typing too fast. That wouldn't be any use at all.

Mind you, the likelihood of people typing sufficiently slowly for this to catch the keystrokes is high enough to warrant this as a threat. However, that's only if the attacker knew the name of the file to look for. I guess to pull something from My Documents they just need the user to type in their Windows username (eg c:\Documents and settings\[username goes here]\My Documents - they could fill in the rest themselves), but then they'd have to append the document name, say, document1.doc to the end.

If they don't know the filename, this attack is dead in the water. Why would someone enter the name of a document on their system just because some random webpage asks?

I suppose a fix for this would be a warning prompt when a file is about to be sent. Any other suggestions? Is this solution too obtrusive?

As I understand it, Wine is there so that people can use the few Windows apps they need to use, but prevents those apps from being a barrier to moving to a Linux environment. The hope is that apps will emerge that have sufficient capability to supplant the Windows ones being used, but until then, I'd say it's better for users to be using a handful of Windows apps within Linux rather than using all Windows apps under Windows.

That wouldn't work. Intel has seen to it that Joe Blow pays attention to the *clock speed* of the CPU.

It wouldn't matter if AMD suddenly started using titles such as "S Class" or "Advance Xtreme" or "Super Gig Fighter II Turbo", the reaction would be the same. Joe Blow would look at them, say "whaaa?" and wonder where the clock speed was, then give up and turn to Intel with its *safe*, *friendly*, *easy to understand* clock speed brandings. Even though they were the inferior product.

Bottom line: this isn;t a sellout tactic, it's a *survival* tactic. The IT industry isn't exactly the most comfortable business to be in right now, and they have to start using a little spin if necessary.

If it causes the man in the street to pick the superior product, more power to them.

  23. It's all about aspirations vs ability... on What's A Good Starter Linux distro? · · Score: 1

I started off with Linux by trying out Red Hat 6.2. It seemed okay, it didn't give me headaches on installing... same with 7.0, no problems.

But I felt bad about using non-free, so I nuked it and went to Debian. Ouch.

Potato's xfree86 didn't support my GeForce 2, so I went looking for a way to hack xf86 4 into it. In retrospect, I probably should have tried out Woody, but I didn't like the idea that Woody was "unstable" and balked at it.

I then decided to wait until Woody was frozen and released as stable. Still waiting...

When it comes down to it, all I'm after is a few basic things - Perl, Python (cos I want to learn it), PHP (ditto), Apache (know a bit, must learn more), MySQL (know much, want much more), a GUI (cos going to a commandline feels like a step backward - several terms at once please :) ) and games (natch). So until Woody reaches stable, I'll have to pick another one.

I think I'm leaning toward Mandrake; sounds easy enough to use, and I probably won't have enough on it to worry about nuking it when the time comes. Then I can finally have a Debian system.

By then, I may even be ready for it. =)

True dat. Anandtech make the same point equally well when they refer to the Duron, in their wrap-up of 2000, as "the processor without a home". There are far too few cheap Socket A boards out there, and it could end up hampering the Duron if it hasn't already.

  25. Re:random things breaking not my experience on Debian Testing Tree Goes Online · · Score: 1

That's further than I ever got with Debian Potato. (Disclaimer: I've never compiled anything in my life, but I'd heard good things about the way Debian installs/sets up things.)

I went through the whole picking-modules thing (the dependency mapper is damn neat - automatically determining which packages conflict, which need certain other packages, recommend them or suggest them. I like that a lot) - but the problem didn't pop up until I tried to set up the X server.

There was no option for the GeForce 2 GTS 32Mb. Bit of a bugger, cos that's what I've got right now. I tried both GeForce 256 and GeForce DDR, and the X server ends up either not working or dumping me in 320x200.

This is after trying both entering my monitor settings from the manual, and trying one of the default settings which matched closest. (I have a monitor capable of 1600x1200, so it would have coped.)

The thing I find most confusing is that Red Hat "gets it" every time. I always end up with a pristine 1280x1024 in X under RH. (I think it has GF2 support, mind you.)

Once I can get Deb to behave with the GF2, I'll probably stick with it. Anyone got any ideas how I could sort it out without drowning in source code?
