Simon Cowell may be a marketing genius but Rick Rubin is a musical genius and a pioneer who helped break dozens and dozens of acts with a whole lot more creative merit then Cowell's manufactured pop drivel. Almost all the albums Rubin produces end up being one of the, if not the best album of that particular band or artist. Don't get me wrong Cowell is good at what he does but Rubin is in a whole different ball game all together.

Oh don't get me wrong, I was just giving reasons why they might have put it in there but I agree with you that it doesn't really belong in this list. But if I look at the list, most games that are in there are questionable. I think the list is more of a conversation starter than an actual canon but that's just me. I miss games like populous, Pac man (talk about cultural impact, pac man was everywhere in the 80's and still is one of the most recognized icons of gaming culture) and ALOT of other titles.
There's just a single arcade game in there for crying out loud. This list is a starting point, and a crappy one at that.

Well depends on where you're from, but here in Europe Sensible soccer was absolutely huge when it came out.
I know alot of people who bought an Amiga just for that game. It popularised sports games in a way none did before and while Kickoff 1/2 (whatever happend to dino dini?) were big as well Sensible soccer was viewed as the definitive soccer game at the time.
It also did alot for human vs human gaming, IIRC no other title before it spawned as many competitions and after school gaming session with friends as Sensi did.
Even though I don't like real life soccer and never did, I loved Sensible soccer, it just felt so right in everything it did.
So I guess it's there to represent the sports game part of the market, which is quite big (although not here on slashdot i think).

I do think Populous should be on there, it's the game that essentially started the RTS genre IMHO) but that's the point of these lists: to get people thinking and talking about what the essence of a truly great game is.

The lobby system is actually pretty well done, it's the first xbox live game I've played where, if you try to connect to a match which turns out to be full, you dont't get send back 2 screens and have to reload the whole server list.
Sounds pretty logical, but all xbox live games reload the list and it's very, very annoying. There was a public beta and they actually listened to what the testers had to say, apparently this is a newsworthy event since there was a slashdot story on it here.

The multiplayer gameplay is pretty cool as well, the grapling hook gives it something unique although it can be used for cheap stuff as well. I almost got the feeling the grapling hook was designed for the multiplayer as there's only a couple of spots where you actually *have* to use it in the single player game. That was one of the weak spots in this game for me, they could have done some more cool puzzles with the grappling hook. Mech battles are pretty cool too, I havent played that much online but it seemed pretty well balanced from what I've played, the mech vs footsoldier battles are offcourse stacked against the guy on foot, but it's not as one sided as you'd think. Although this could've changed since the game is out longer now and just like with battlefield2 players have probably been getting better with the vehicles.

And I didn't have a problem with the singleplayer AI, it was dumb yes, but this is an action game not ghost recon. It's the difference with say a movie like commando versus saving private ryan, the enemies are just canon fodder and you don't need brains for that. This game is a big budget popcorn flick and does it well. All in all a nice title, nothing revolutionary but just a solid, well-made shooter.

I'd need to spend some extra cash to do it in HD, but it wouldn't even be close to $600 bucks even if i'd get a new machine instead of upgrading my second hand machine it wouldn't be 600$.
Not even WITH a monitor. Also I think you'll find that the people who don't want to pay the microsoft tax don't want to pay the Sony tax either.

Maybe the review took into account the horrible bugs it had when shipped. I couldn't play it at an acceptible frame rate till it was patched and to this day I havent been able to get the multiplayer portion of the game working. My machine should be able to handle this game no problems but it still doesn't run as smoothly as any other source title even with all features turned off or low. And I'm not the only one who has had problems with the game, the publishers forums were littered with complaints the day it was released. I do agree with you that the game is great once you finally get it to run decently but I do think reviews should reflect technical difficulties such as these as well.

I've heard about a Japanese businesses promoting failing managers, the theory is that more responsibility will lead to better performance by said manager.

But I don't think that's the case here, not that I'm a big Sony fan but the guy did start the whole playstation project which undeniably took the video game industry to a new level (which has it's good and bad sides offcourse), so he's not a complete idiot. In the end he did make Sony ALOT of money and at the beginning of Sony's gaming division there were few people at Sony who thought gaming was more than a fad.

I think Sony promoted him to keep him away from the press, because like you said, the guy is a PR nightmare.
Alot of people in the industry told me something like this would happen as soon as the launch was over with because the guy simply couldn't keep his mouth shut.

  21. Re:Weird stuff indeed. on Web-Based Assistant Changes the Face of Dutch Politics · · Score: 1

The fundamental flaw in 'de kieswijzer' is that it only has questions about campaign themes, it completely ignores larger philosophical issues.
So you could end up given the advice to vote for a heavily religious party like the CU (christen unie) or the SGP (Staatkundig Gereformeerde Partij) even though you're an athiest and pro choice, simply because your stance on current campaign issues is the same as theirs. If abortion or euthanasia (these are just examples offcourse) are not issues in the campaign you will not be asked on the subject and could be responsible for bringing a party in power that actually disagrees with you on fundamental issues.

I've once had a talk with the guy in charge of the 'stichting voor publiek en politiek' ('the institute for the public and politics') and he basically said that I was right but that it didn't really matter that much as the current campaigns (this was a while ago, like 2-3 years) which I think is short sighted and misleading. One of the major problems with politics today is that long term vision is largely being ignored for short term election wins and that's not the way to go in my opinion.

Having said that, I highly doubt this weeks elections were that influenced by 'de kieswijzer'. The people who decided this election were the low income/low education groups which are typically not interested in politics and probably arent that motivated to go to sites like these. They went with anything non establishment, some for the Charisma of the far left SP's leader (Socialist Party) and some for the anti establishment/anti foreigners message of the far right PvdV (Party for Freedom, who got 9 seats in parlement for which makes me a bit embarrassed to be dutch to be honest, it's a heavily anti foreigner, anti islam party). If you look at the numbers it fits, Pim Fortuyn's party got 26 seats in parlement 2002 ever since their failure their voters have been on the lookout for a different anti politics as usual platform and it look like they found it with the SP and PvdV.

Alls in all it's been a sad week in the Netherlands, these election results are going to be really hard to work with and I wouldn't be surprised if we have to go back to voting both shortly.
I hope we can finally stop all this nonsense and get it back together, we havent been ourselves since the rise of Pim Fortuyn and his untimely demise.
