That's brilliant, I'll have the whole day to prepare for the greatest Holiday in the world: talk like a pirate day on september 19th.
Just think what we can do against global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters if everybody was a pirate for 1 day!
"I think the feature most often requested is an open source Flash Player. A close runner-up for most requested feature is proper audio/video sync. And Linux users will get that this time around, thanks largely to the purging of the OSS audio API in favor of the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA)."
I hear you, it's the reason laptops don't work for me.
I'm hoping the USB keyboard doesnt get bigger than it is, I've gotten my dad who works at IBM to get me a stash of model M's that'll last me a lifetime.
I'm still contemplating whether I'll let my future kids enherit what's left or take them with me to the grave.
No, if you're truly creative it doesn't matter what you use, creativity is not in the tools but how you use them.
There's nothing you can do on a mac you can't do on a windows PC except for some of apple's own applications like motion or final cut (and motion isn't gonna satisfy anybody who wants to do motion graphics it's a nice app for homemovies but that's about it, final cut is pretty cool tho I must admit and much better than Premiere although I havent used that in a while so that could've changed).
I sometimes wonder if it's the nature of the job, that one so far removed from their employees will eventually become that way, without trying, as a consequence of their aloof position rather than their personality.
Maybe it's the nature of your job? Employees usually don't have insight to the company and the market (one hopes) a CEO has, therefore he sometimes makes decisions you don't understand or think arent smart.
That's not to say there arent any stupid ceo's out there or smart employees out there tho, but please let's not forget that there's also some very smart ceo's and incredibly stupid employees out there.
I propose a new law, a logical expansion of godwin's law.
Any person who after all these years still refers to windows as 'windoze' and Microsoft as 'M$' is automatically banned from further participation of the discussion at hand.
Not that i'm a particular fan of the company or the product but windoze or m$ is not smart, funny or edgy in any way shape or form and hasn't been for years (maybe even a decade). It makes you look like a fanatical raving loony and hurts any legitimate argument you may have had.
Please stop it.
I work as a freelancer and on some of my bigger jobs, once I got my briefing I find it very relaxing to go to another city/country and work there. It helps me concentrate on the job plus it makes my free time extra enjoyable because of the change of scenery.
So I actually go on vacation to work.. sort of
Maybe it's just me but I find it very scary that somebody holds a 'pro-science' speech and gets commended for it, the fact science has to be defended in this day and age is bad enough already, that there are so few people with cloud doing it that we can find the time to cheer about individual cases of it happening is even scarier.
Isn't one of the main goals of the olympics to unite diverse people from all over the world, because sport is such a great unifier?
Videogames are not universally accessible by any means that disqualifies it from being an olympic sport, period.
Just here on slashdot.
I thought the sony presentation was pretty crappy, as did most slashdot users, but the people I know who are game nerds instead of the allround nerds here at slashdot thought it was pretty cool.
A couple of posts above, somebody talks about slashdot being an indicator of things to come, well it's not, and that's a good thing in most areas of live actually.
Well even if that's a fake, this one isn't and it must be one of the worst logo's I've ever seen. Not only is it butt ugly but it uses a friggin color gradient..Which is a horrible, horrible idea for a logo. Good logo design is so hard to find these days. Most have horrible color schemes (you should be able to use a logo in grayscale without losing elements of the design) and/or have too much detail.
It might be because I missed the start of the presentation, but I don't understand why they were demonstrating Xbox live, xbox360 games and the Wii controller?
I just hope they start making some good games again. Back in the days Peter Molyneux made some very nice stuff but ever since he left Bullfrog and started Lionhead most of his stuff was more about the hype than about the games. Some people liked B&W 1 but I never could get into it, too many little annoiances to be really entertaining. Fable was good, but way, way too short, I finished it in one day and I wasn't even trying. That's basically the story of lionhead games, good idea, poor execution (wheter it be controls, length or something else).
I think his problem is that now he's a super-mega-uber game developer and people are to much in awe of him and his status to go against him on game design issues and in the end it's hurting the games. At Bullfrog there probably were enough people around that knew him before he got the status he now has to tell him an element of the game wasn't working.Giving creatives who made a couple of hits total creative control is seldom a good thing, just look at George Lucas(first example to come to mind, Image comics is another) , creativity flourishes within confines.
Having somebody to answer to is probably really good for Lionhead, altough Microsoft would'nt be my first choice I would've rather seen Ubisoft buying them, they seem to be really on the ball the last couple of years.
It took quite some time for movies to be considered art, why should it be any difference for videogames?
Besides that, the medium presents some problems for the artists, since development costs are so high, one of the cornerstones of art, the chance to experimen is rather limited.
That situation is slowly starting to change with modding and such giving young artist a chance to try out different ideas. Also the fact that more and more game creators are raised with the medium should help alot.
But most importantly, as soon as people start talking about whether something is art or not, run, there's bound to be an avalaunch of bs coming your way. It's one of the only arguments more pointless, bitter and polarizing than mac vs pc.
The PS2 is still out there and you can get a ps1 with all the games you'd want for a couple of bucks second hand.
By the time the PS3 comes out the second hand ps2 games will go down in price as well, I wonder if it won't be cheaper to buy all the ps1 & 2 games you want second hand than through their online service.
Nintendo's catalog is much more interesting in that respect, the originals are often hard to find and expensive, heck even microsoft's offerings on marketplace are more interesting, where else can you get those classic arcade games, legally?
I think the parent meant ms. Pacman, which came out in '82, same as E.T., and also sold miserably.
The port has to be one of the worst arcade conversions and isn't even in the same league as PacMan that came out in '81.
Both were expected to be huge successes and were produced in enormous numbers only to end up sitting in an atari warehouse. There's rumors that certain roads in New Mexico (I think it was new mexico anyway) are paved with the molten cartridges. Doubt that's true but in a retro gaming store over here in Amsterdam you get a new, sealed copy of the game for free if you buy a used 2600 there.
I know bashing companies who resort to threatening with legal action is the 'in' thing with the slashdot crowd but come on, this is a cancer causing gene we're talking about here. It's pretty reasonable that a company would'nt want it's product linked to that (however annoying that product may be).
The scientists that came up with the abbreviation thought they were being smart & funny and Nintendo thought otherwise.
It's not like their legal actions are threatening scientific progress or freedom of expression so it's not worth getting your panties in a bunch over this.
A nuclear fascility IIRC, he had all these computers standing around and at the time they had one day a year visitors could come in and look around in the complex. He couldn't get the public interested in the computers by explaining how they worked and what they did, so he decided to create a little program to demonstrate the power of the computers and unintentionaly created one of the first videogames. Atleast that's how the story is told in 'the ultimate history of videogames' by Steven L. Kent (good read btw).
Over here in the Netherlands there's also debate about the violence in videogames, well a politician is trying to start a dabate about it anyway.
We all know already that there will always be people who like their entertainment to be violent, this is never gonna change. And as long as there is violent entertainment around there will be people protesting against it.
Violent games will not be banned in Germany nor in the Netherlands, and if they are, there's gonna be ways around it(some already exist, like valve's steam). Nobody will REALLY be affected by any of this, it's just the media, politicians and general public keeping themselves busy.
There's alot of problems out there that indeed cause violence, but those are pretty darn hard to solve so it's best to spend your time talking about this none issue than getting frustrated over the real issues.
After all, frustration is the biggest cause of violence.
Don't hold your breath.. Adobe and apple havent been the best of buddies lately. Seems that Adobe wasn't amused when Apple started competing with one of their most loyal dev's with final cut pro. As a result they've stopped making the apple version of premiere. Apple's motion is now picking up steam, would'nt suprise me if Adobe scraps After effects too.
I disagree, even in the 79-88 period most of arcade games were crap, I'll admit that 90% is probably to much when it comes to arcades but still. You seem to forget the endless stream clones of pacman, space invaders, or some other succesful game, and these clones made up the majority of the available titles.
And there's plenty of good stuff going on now, great upcoming console titles like 'shadow of the collosus' or 'okami'(the first ones to spring to mind but there are plenty more).
Bottom line is that just like any other form of entertainment the truely great titles are few and far between.
That's brilliant, I'll have the whole day to prepare for the greatest Holiday in the world: talk like a pirate day on september 19th.

At best a Mac makes you appear more creative.
I sometimes wonder if it's the nature of the job, that one so far removed from their employees will eventually become that way, without trying, as a consequence of their aloof position rather than their personality.

As a general rule of thumb, whenever you see the bandai brand on a videogame, just walk away.
Although that might have changed now that they've merged with namco

Using a touchpad is for amateurs, try using your wacom in a fps for a real challenge.
