  1. Re:I miss my pager all the time. on Where Have All the Pagers Gone? · · Score: 1

    I miss mine too.

I had a personal one that I carried so family / friends could contact me anytime. It was small and easy to have clipped on my belt all the time. Cell phones, though small still aren't as small. It was only $14 per month, much cheaper than my current, digital, cell phone. So when I got a page I went and found a ANALOG phone that I could understand the person on the other end. I have trouble und*rst#ing peo@@e whe* tal*** to peopl! on my dig@ cell pho!!#. I also miss my analog cell phone, but that's another story. Did I also mention it was cheap?

I think it's all about money$$$$. Fantasy sells more than pure Sci-Fi. You see a lot of Sci-Fi writers cross over to Fantasy to make a living so they are lumped together. But I agree they are 2 different things.

I've been a member of SFBC before (get the intial deal and then quit!) and while you can get new books for less, you only have whatever selections they are offering at the time. And of course more Fantasy then Sci-Fi.

Lately I just use the local library. You already pay for that and they will usually get a book when I request it.

As a person who has gone through the change in Indiana, I, like many Hoosiers have a very strong opinion on DST. The latest polls still show about an even number for and against. I am on the 'against' side as I don't' use an alarm clock to get up. My biological clock is well adjusted to the same time for rising every morning and thus don't need to be annoyed by an alarm each day.

But then the brilliant Indiana legislators decided we were loosing billions on business because the time issue was too confusing. (Never saw reports to support this). So they voted to change time and then in another stroke of brilliance, put us in the Eastern time zone (because we do so much business with New York, not our nearest neighbor Chicago).

Since a good portion of the blue collar workers (a good portion of IN pop), work general shifts that start around 7:00 AM, we find that we constantly commute to work, year round, in the dark. And the children go to school in the dark as well (think of the children!).

As a person who respects nature and solar cycles (look at my login) I personally find it ridicules that solar noon here is around 2 PM.

I used to enjoy living in Indiana with the perk of not having to change time. Once again the government has screwed me again.

My wife is trying to convince me to move to AZ, and I'm half tempted for that reason alone.

Which Midwest are you talking about?

In my area, (Central Indiana) the available tech jobs have been in decline for some time. I have a broad 17 year experience with a non-outsource type systems administration skill set. In the early to mid nineties I had my choice of jobs. Since 2000 the pickings have been very slim for someone like me. The newspaper ads have gone from nearly a whole page to 3 to 6 on Sunday. Monster just wants "Secret e-Bay Shoppers" and 4 to 6 new listings a week of lower paying entry level helpdesk positions or very specific programming skills. The only calls I get from job sites are recruiters that don't read my resume carefully and ask if I can do this or that (which isn't even close to what I list).

Add that to the fact that local employers realize this and they mistreat you because they know you cannot go anywhere else very easily. I took a job last year that now has made a wrong turn (long story) so I'm looking again. It's worse than what I saw in 2004.

Nothing positive to report here in the Midwest I live in.

My brain's bullshit meter goes off and finds both Democrats and Republicans full of it. Then it heard about the Libertarian Party and found it lined up more closely to what I believed in (without predetermined thoughts guiding this process).

Since then (2000) I'm active in the Libertarian Party in the local elections. But based on the usual comments about the Libertarian Party from others, they have predetermined thoughts and automatically dismiss us.

So that means the studies results must only apply to the people with narrow lines of thinking which seems to be a majority in the US. (Who elected the narrow minded Bush, twice!) So open your minds and you'll see that Libertarians base our ideas on principles, not one sided thinking.
