I like the idea as a tech geek but at the same time I realise there is a massive down side to giving students PDA like devices. About two years ago there was a study (cant seem to find the link) that showed students who used PDA's had a massive reduction in memory recall efficiency. It makes sense though, the human brain is not static and builds/removes synaptic links as they are needed (a good example is language and young children), thus if the students do not have to recall facts from their memory anymore but just query their iPhone then their brains will not build the extra synaptic links needed for efficient recall. So my personal view is that giving iPhones to students as a learning aid on one level is clever but long term is dumb.
Ignoring the fear mongering diatribe by RMS he does have a point. Who owns your data (forget privacy laws they aren't worth the paper they are printed on now) and does the cloud service provider have the right to force you to access the data you own through a costly proprietary channel ? Think about it, Im Google, we now have 8 years of your email on our servers, you will now have to pay for a very expensive application to access it, what you dont want to pay, sorry we will delete your precious data then.
What many seem to be missing is "the bar code image could have been processed by googles 150,000 servers" not the software on the phone. The real power of Android is it's ability to leverage googles services for pre/post processing. For example, lets say I want to add an effect to a picture I have recently taken. Now imagine the effect is way beyond the processing ability of the mobile phone. In the case of the android phone it seamlessly uses a simple image editing front end then for hard tasks it sends the job to Google (servers) for processing. This is were Apple has serious hole in its iPhone model, no back end network processing, or what they do have his seriously under powered, thus Apple will be stuck with ever more powerful processors chewing through batteries faster and faster until they start building huge server farms. Then that produces other issues, how will Apple charge for such services when Google dont.
Im on a 22mb/s (small b) and I havent seen a server yet that makes use of this bandwidth. The sad thing is most web services have a capped connection speed per IP/MAC address so you can have 2,000,000Gb/s and it wont make an difference.
Your answer is thanks to an Australian inventor called Ralph Sarich . He designed a dual injection system for two stroke motors that reduces the size of the injected fuel droplets to thus improving combustion massively. Two stroke motors have a huge power to weight ratio but they are rather inefficient and produce allot of pollution. Ralph Sarich and his Orbital Engine company spent years and millions of dollars fixing this problem so now two stoke motors are not only very efficient (more so) but produce very low amount of pollution due to the incredible efficiency of the engine.
Depression is a horrible thing and it hits many without notice and can be a horrible experience. Many of you will look at this death as weakness but the reality is some of the greatest and strongest people alive (and dead) have suffered with the demon that is depression for years often with no help and in complete ignorance by those around the sufferer.
And I just gift wrapped my first born child to send to Google after using Chrome, never mind Im testing Silverlight tomorrow so I don't have to unwrap him again.
in 40 years some kid will laugh at your pathetic attempt at geek coolness when you mention the Bluewater and say "wow your old, Im amazed anyone needed a warehouse just for one petaflop even my Wango-matic game cube has 50 petaflops"
I say DRM, it serves no public good, creates no new innovations and at the end of the day doesn't even increase the profits for the media distributors anyway as the petty financial gains made are consumed by all the DRM overhead.
Am I the only one thinking this is like someone saying they want privacy then running around butt naked then wondering how they can keep their privacy at the same time.
Release over budget Disney like Star Wars cartoon
Get ripped by media for turning the Star Wars franchise into CGI for 4 year olds
Have a public dummy spit and then set the lawyers free on what little is left of the Star Wars franchise fan base.

Im Australian so I can understand the subtle nature sarcastic english humour. Sorry I have to rush off I have a committee meeting on a new funny walk that needs approval...
When one is growing up you always have one kid in the neighbourhood who doesn't quite understand how to share. You will all be sitting down playing with your toys together, playing for a few minutes with each others pride and really having a good time. Then there will be this one kid will be sitting there not sharing his toys with the group. If you ask to play with his toys he is always using it and even if by some chance you get one of his pride an joys in your hands he will then dictate how you should play with it, then you will get annoyed and just hand it back because you find you are not having fun any more for some reason. Microsoft is that kid who doesn't know how to share, it is not their fault, its the way they are and the way they have been taught survive. So when when Microsoft stands up and says "Im going to share my toys with everyone", I have to sit back and think of that kid who never shared and smile.

ploughing billions of dollars of tax payers money into gas guzzling SUV's saved jobs right ? Don't laugh the US divisions of most car makers is now the only ones losing money, for example, if Ford stopped selling cars in the USA it would be making a profit.
No Microsoft havent become "Mr Nice Guy [TM]" overnight, they have just realised their old marketing methods don't work anymore and they need a new gig. With Apple (I dont like Apple personally but I can respect them) gaining market share I can just imagine the Microsoft marketing dept looking at the ever growing FOSS code base and fanboys and wondering, how do we get a bit of that action, easy become a paying member.
If all else fails, blame your tools.

This is old news if you play Golf in Australia thanks to Shadow Caddy
And to think this would be a no brainer if the manufacturers only allowed FOSS Codecs to be used on the demo units.
