  1. Re:TCO on Solar Panels Reach $1 a Watt · · Score: 1

One thing you have to be wary of is that just putting the panels on your roof is not a wise idea even if you do figure out the right direction. A major factor that is just as important as the direction is the temperature of the panels. If you don't have the panels setup so there is good ventilation you can reduce their efficiency by up to 40-80% on a hot sunny day.

Answer me this question, do you buy a product designed to meet your average needs or one that meets your maximum peak needs ? When I read the request submitted I immediately understood he/she were talking about the maximum worst case scenario.

Not sure how it works in the USA be here in Australia any legal contract that misrepresents consumer rights as stated in legislated consumer law can leave a company open to a AU$10,000 fine for each infringement found. A few years back I remember a case were someone got hurt by flying debris on a race track and the owner denied responsibility because on the back of the ticket it said the patrons had no rights to claim damages. Well it went to court the track owner not only had to pay the medical bills and damages but was dragged back into court for fraud and misrepresenting consumer law.

This is actually a common mistake by staff and management. The saying goes "tell my 100 ways to improve business one percent, not one way to improve business ninety-nine percent". The light-bulb moments were great ideas come forward are pretty rare and more often than not are a actually seen as a mistake when they are first seen or discovered. So if you have some silly idea or you find something annoying is happening in your work space and you have an idea on how to fix it, speak up, because in this day and age of pink slips being delivered by the truck full clever people are an asset not to be thrown out.

  9. Cowon does it better on Microsoft To Exit the Zune Business? · · Score: 1

Recently I decided to update my old 30GB 5G iPOD as the battery wasn't holding a charge after 3 years of use. Although the iPOD is a great product it had allot of short comings for me with the major one being a lack of an equaliser. Well after a few months (Im patient) of getting specs of different media players and putting them in a spread sheet with points added for features I ended up purchasing a Cowon O2 pmp. I was slightly skeptical about the device when I selected it but now I have it there are zero regrets. The interface is just great and it has that missing 10 channel equaliser and a great high res display that put even the iPhone to shame. What really sets the O2 aside for me is the ability to play "any video or audio file format", yep FLAC mkv you name it and the O2 will play it. So my advice to Microsoft is go buy Cowon as they make the best pmp out there right now.

  10. Corp Tax take shrinking on GAO Reports Bailout and Tech Firms Love Tax Havens · · Score: 1, Troll

I find it amusing that US politicians are always talking about decreasing personal income tax, at the same time the corporate tax take has gone from 34% (1968) to just 15% in 2008. So who is paying the missing 19% of the tax take pie you may ask ? At the end of the day you and "your children" are as the government prints money and borrows. This gives the wonderful double whammy of an inflated currency (true worth of the currency drops) and a massive debt to pay off (over $3000 per person needs to be spent just to pay the interest every year). So as your tax money is used to bail out companies who pay less than 2% tax on total income thanks to off shored holdings you have to wonder who is getting screwed during this recession.

  14. Killing the Golden Goose on Universities Patenting More Student Ideas · · Score: 1

Sooner or later University student councils are going to tell students not to "finish their research within the University". If I knew the University was going to patent one of my ideas with no recompense for my time you can guarantee if I had an eureka moment I would pack my bags and open my own home lab at that point. Im starting now hear reports of a massive lack of information flowing between students/teachers/Universities because everyone is chasing the magic $$. This as you can imagine is doing detrimental damage to University research as the same research is being repeated (and the tax payer paying for it multiple times) and little if any of the resulting information is being shared. Its a sad day when research information within Universities becomes a guarded commodity because this is totally against all previous policies of sharing information for the betterment of all.
