If you can tell the difference between 24 and 25 C well enough that you feel you need a temperature value inbetween the two, then I'm seriously impressed.
His site has a track of a recent 10 mile run around central park. I suspect he's fitter than you average geek, who gets winded going to the fridge for more jolt.;)
If you couldn't get more than 15FPS on a "rather recent machine" then you need to learn about removing spyware, because your rig is likely bloated end-to-end with it.
I was running the demo on my 2.5 year old 1GHz Athlon with a GF3Ti200 and I was getting about 20 FPS.
I then upgraded to a XP2500 and got somewhat better frames, and yes - with a ATI 9800 Pro it's smooth as silk - but 15 FPS? Either your definition of "recent" means "five years old", or your system has SERIOUS problems.
Probably because so many piss-poor programmers assume they'll have that ability, and the apps your users need won't work if they don't have that priviledge?
Even though you're trolling (in a funny way), I'll answer you seriously. And this is from a guy who has no mods on his case, just a couple extra fans installed in premade locations.
1) will modding my case make my computer fast, more capable, or "better" in any way?
For some of them, yes. Airflow is usually a high concern in a mod. All the eye candy doesn't help performance, but good airflow can let you OC and/or get more life out of your gear as it's kept cooler.
2) will it get me all the hot computer groupie chicks?
Yes, because none is all of zero.;)
3) if i cared about esthetics so much, wouldn't it have been more cost-effective to buy a mac?
Because esthetics isn't the whole of it. The joy is in the doing. It's a hobby, a project, something fun to do.
4) can my quasi-artistic needs be channeled into better projects?
Define "better". Art is subjective and "better" is in the eye of the doer. If the modder felt it would be "better" to paint a painting, he'd do that.
5) will other people think about me the same as they do when they see a guy driving a civic with a huge wing and fartcan exhaust?
Probably, but I suspect both people don't care what others think, as they're doing this for themselves.
6) is modding my case really just a desparate cry for attention?
No, as I said above it's a hobby, a pastime, and a project.
I don't mind that - because I can beat the tar out of him for it.;) It's the faceless idiots out there who get infected by not keeping up to date, and end up probing my systems that I can't beat down that drive me nuts!
Green tea is a material the Average Joe has experience with (ok, not all that average, but any west coaster who likes sushi knows it well).
That means it has more personal relevance/significance. Sure, they could just rattle off the chemical compound, but that wouldn't connect with the readers. This makes it a "hey, neat" story.
Remember, this is at an astronomy event - generally hell and gone away from light pollution sources.
That means that for low speeds, your PARKING lights are sufficient to navigate you away from the immediate area of the event.
Daytime running lights will end up blinding everyone, and they will be justifiably annoyed. They stick around until everyone's done so they don't ruin each other's nightvision.
I do agree that some warning is a good idea for novices, which is why I like the standard Mandrake root setup - log in via GUI and you have a glaring red background.
I think you're a bit confused - your calculation is talking about "just seeing" it, at 100/cm^2, and then your final figures are still in per cm^2.
I think you need to drop the "per surface area" part. Your calculation looks to be trying to figure out how many photons are emitted in total, not how many are hitting per square centimeter. How many are hitting per cm^2 is your -start point-.
Computers don't cool (much) by radiating heat. They cool by air exchange. Wood or aluminum, you'll still need a good airflow out of the case to keep everything cool.
Yes, the cases get warm - but the amount of heat coming OFF of them, felt a few mm away from the case, is miniscule compared to the blowdryer you've got attatched to the power supply.:)
That all depends on how many relatives you have, who will be whining at you to reinstall their computer for them, which broke even though "they didn't do anything".
How much material are we talking? Will this be a major event to the earth, or will the upper atmosphere just shrug and eat it up?
It's a pretty freaking big planet. If we're talking about 5kg of fissionables, that seems pretty small to me compared to the daily dosage the planet gets from the sun - although I do understand there's one hell of a difference between solar radiation and vaporous uranium - the latter's toxic as well as radioactive, iirc.
And for "Holy crap it's huge" there's World War II Online. Not the most detailed, but it's all of Europe at half-scale.
They've also just brought in SpeedTree, so the terrible forests have been replaced with very much more realistic ones.
For a size comparision, see: http://www5.playnet.com/downloads/worldsize.pdf

Incompetent system administration has the potential to take grids offline, ruin databases, expose personal data, etc.
Does that mean that incompetent system administration is terrorism?
The key word here is intent.

I wasn't saying you were a pirate - just that your implication of six CD's a month being a normal amount struck me as way off.
I've bought a whopping average of 6 CD's per month
You may be trying to be sarcastic, but frankly I do find that to be a lot. I buy maybe six CD's a year, if not less.
Books, well, that's a different story - but even there it's only a book every week or two.

It's all about acting like you're supposed to be doing what you're doing. Act like you own the place, and nobody will say a thing to you.

secure waist disposal site
Is that another name for an exclusive gym?
It takes a stronger force than other metals to begin to deform, but once it does, it shatters or cracks rather than bending.
It's not an "advanced work around". It's the simple way that it's handled on Linux.
Is it a DIFFERENT way than it works on Windows? Yes.
If your criteria for "correct functionality" is "download and doubleclick just like windows" then you've got a tough sell.

I 100% guarantee you that the Marketing, Sales, and other "normal" guys would have turned it into a breast joke FASTER than geeks would.
That's got to be a typo, or somebody who doesn't understand the difference of "jumped to" vs "jumped by".
I think this is a false concern, personally.

I think you're probably talking about one of the early Megatokyo strips:
