  1. Re:Could also stop you from using your own work. on Students Protest Turnitin.com · · Score: 1

In the academic world reusing work from a previous class or project is considered plagerism. Every assignment must consist of *original* work. The point of education is to teach you to think, reusing your old work totally cicumvents that idea, and is intellectually lazy. The only time it is acceptable is with permission of both teachers, which you are not likely to get.

When you turned in these papers, did it occur to you to tell the proffesor that you were using old work? What do you think they would have said?

That said, I disagree with the program, but not because it would have caught you.

Ha! According to whom? Any Mac fanboy can tell you that it's quite the opposite. From 1990 through 2001 (the year of the iPod) Apple was always described in the media as a company in a downward spiral. "Beleaguered" was the term, if I remember correctly. As for the comparison to BeOS (UNIX on the desktop, Atari ST, etc.), well that's just silly. First of all they never had the most popular consumer electronic gadget, and second they had no advertising (compared to Apple).

Just in case anyone was wondering, it's the job of the ombudsman to deal with complaints. At a newspaper they are also meant to review the paper's reporting. So this lady makes an glaring inaccurate statement (which it is her job to guard against) and when met with the initial round of complaints she defends the statement, which causes further (more outraged) complaints. What does the lady do (remember it's her job to deal with reader complaints)? She freaks out and shuts down the comments. I can kind of understand a normal reporter not wanting to deal with complaints, but it's her job! In this case being thin-skinned == being under-qualified for the position.

The problem with compatibility is the DRM, not that Apple refuses to license their flavor. I stopped buying tracks online because I can't play them anywhere. Recently I was at a party in a hotel suite. Everyone had their iPods, one person had a laptop, and the only pair of speakers were hooked into the hotel's TV. The DVD player could play audio CDs and mp3 CDs/DVDs. The only way to listen to our music all night was to feed the music onto the laptop and burn an mp3 DVD. So everyone was happy except the people with DRM in their songs. They didn't get to hear their music in the mix. It didn't matter if it was Apple DRM or Microsoft DRM. The DVD player was made before DRM had become so prolific so it only supported open standards. I can think of dozens of times, like this, where DRMed songs couldn't join the party. It's totally jive.

I'd like to point out, like everyone else here, that you are a waste of flesh. If you won't kill yourself please consider cutting off your balls. please.

In addition to these people having no means to leave town, also consider that many of them live on government checks, which are mailed out on the first of the month. So at the time of the hurricane most of them have literally no money. There was no evacuation plan to get these people out of the city before the hurricane.

People were told to go to the superdome and convention center on the radio. When they got there nothing was set up for them. No food, no water, plumbing knocked out, and no evacuation. When your government tells you that they have a shelter set up for you, and you don't have anywhere else to go, why wouldn't you believe them? Stupid? No. Uneducated. Yeah. Maybe they'll learn not to trust authority, the ones that already have are those in the streets.

Your comment about politicians trying to gain from this disaster is laughable. The government attempt at aid was the biggest clusterfuck ever. If anything many of them should be very worried about losing their jobs and earning the distane of the people.

You are right that these tasks might be more difficult without a right button, but they are all still possible. Playing a song next in party shuffle is the worst because it requires a 2 drags and a click (drag song to party shuffle, click on party shuffle, drag desired song after currently playing song). The other two are arguably easier. In iCal drag the event onto the Mail program icon. In Safari, command click opens the page in a new window/tab, option click downloads the link, and dragging the link (to the desktop or bookmark bar) saves the link.

The money thing came from the quote in your post about people signing the checks.

I agree that most people with impressive body mods aren't going for office jobs, and the mod is a reflection of that attitude. Some people also use their mods as a sort of social filter, not in the sense that they will only socialize with other modders, but because anyone uptight enough to freak out over their appearance will probably not be a fun person to hang out with. Who knows for how many people this is a conscious decision vs a pleasant side effect.

Then there are certain communities (like my hometown of Seattle) where all of this is so commonplace that it's just much less of an issue. I also find that there is much more intermingling there between people with and without mods. Which seems to me to be the ideal.

To follow up on the above post, obviously not all insights of the counterculture are good ideas. It functions as a birthplace of social change. The really good ideas get passed up to the mainstream, while the not so good ones wither on the vine.
