So you know what happens now - MS issues a company-wide edict forbidding staff blog references to the possible origins of new functionality in their products.
Whats so funny about that? That's probably what will happen, regardless of whether this was intentional or not...
actually, if you went to the cnr website, and looked through the screenshots, they have a "compatability" section. This is even less about having the same software, and more about having one place where you can download and install free software, as well as buy, download and install non-free software.
One bloggers view(s) qualify as news when they have pertinant new information about a something happening in the world, a new outlook, a detailed analysis, or just a good overall post (article). Same as any other person who creates content that is exposed to a large mass.
Last I knew, the linux stuff was only available on the BUSINESS models, the average consumer won't be able to see the difference on the model they are likely to order (a Dimension, XPS, or Inspiron).
One way or the other, you didn't get help because you were a jackass to everyone. Simple. Oh, and your name in no way helps your claim to not be a troll.
First and foremost, 6.10 breaks support for lots of wireless cards, so if he is going to be connecting to a wireless network, then 6.06 is probably a better bet. 6.10 gave me lots of issues with my video card driver (fglrx, which is ATI) mainly issues regarding 3d acceleration. Plus, a lot of the minor little changes are personally annoying (like the changed permissions dialog in Nautilus) and while there is mostly nothing wrong with them, they seem to be clearer or to work better in 6.10. Plus, if he does decide to actually PAY for support, then 6.06 will be what he needs. And, like the guy above me said, 6.06 is made for stability, and 6.10 is a little more experimental.
The ability to pick which OS boots, or which OS can be affected by an installer or other bootable programs, by merely pulling out the cable for the one you want to be untouched (Vista taught me this lesson).
Just download an Ubuntu livecd (I would recommend 6.06, not 6.10) and put it in your current desktop system. Test to see if all the hardware works properly, and then just mess around with the OS. Since you are getting some new hardware, and you want to dual-boot, I would recommend one of the pieces of new hardware be a separate hard drive to put the OS on (you could just partition your first disk, but I find that there are certain advantages to having Windows and Linux on separate hard drives). Nvidia graphics cards generally have better Linux support than ATI cards do, so if you are getting a new graphics card, your best bet would be something from Nvidia. As far as software is concerned, I really don't have any suggestions off the top of my head.
...if anyone more knowledgable about the subject for me could tell me;
A: What areas of the Earth are likely to be most and least affected
B: How bad are the effects supposed to be
C: What are some examples (links to articles or research) of previous effects that may be widely known (other than the Aurora)
Actually, I doubt you will be exposed to this if you don't want to. I bet that they are going to either put up some REALLY GOOD servers with modified versions of maps up, or they release a free version that only lets you play on certain ad-supported servers...moreover, I doubt they will let you play with modified versions of these graphics on...
Check out the "about us" section, original name of the group was the "Ideahamster Organization." Just think about the acronym for a second. Sound it out. I...See...C(u)m. One big joke to fool around with the Slashdot crowd, and probably a few other news blogs too. Don't be surprised if you see this on Fark or digg...
No, but a "Mandatory Security Update" could be released, because Microsoft or other proprietary OS producer decides that the user shouldn't be able to, that could restrict those freedoms. The problem is less what is happening now, although that is a very big part of it, but what could happen in the future. You aren't really the one in control when the OS producer has more power (legally and practically) over your OS, and any patches applied, and the ability to change how you use the OS without your choice. With Open Source you have, at the very least, the LEGAL ability to do what you want with the internals of the OS, and to add whatever functionality or usability changes you want.
And how many people are running third-party drivers that didn't come with a particular hardware device?
Uhh, I use the thirdparty Omega Drivers on my XP install. I find that they generally perform better then the standard ATI drivers...somehow I don't think the guy producing the Omega Drivers will be able to pay $300-500 per release, considering how it is a spare time project for him...
I don't think the problem is "no unit with the number." If you listen to the recording, at around 16-20 minutes, the female rep says "Cent times kilobytes" (yes, I remember her using the singular, which does support the "no unit" idea) not "rate times kilobytes sent" or something similar to that. Cent is identified specifically as the unit going with 0.002.
Similar experiance with my little sister. At seven, one day I let her use my computer. I had recently switched from Windows to Ubuntu, and within minutes she was in heaven. She was doing stuff online, she had found the games (although her poison of choice was lbreakout2) and had fallen in love with Amarok. Ten minutes later I set up an account for her, and she now *wants* Ubuntu on her computer (don't ask, that was her mothers doing). However, her mother refuses to let her or me change anything on the system (although, the Mother also has a habit of calling the tower a modem) so I can't actually put it on. But, I don't think "Nothing, really" is accurate, as my little sister developed a very certain preference for Linux...

Uhh, even on my system (p4 3.2 ghz, 2gigs ram, etc...) OpenOffice, in windows, runs slower than Office.
Uhh, how many of those people actually have HDTV's, however...?
...superDupe(r)! Honestly, this has got to be the most duped post ever.
Some original Xbox games did this too...it was a response to the whole "no mod-chip linux install" thing.

There already is a release of an OLPC VM image...

Different from today how? (Unrelated note: YAY FOR THE NEW 4 MINUTE PREP TIME!)
More interesting, check his comment history here on slashdot http://slashdot.org/~UbuntuDupe/.

Don't forget the speakers and microphones!

Yeah, and didn't Microsoft used to be a Windows company?
