  1. Prioritize! on Learning to Say No in the Workplace? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Remember the 80/20 rule while you're slaving away. 80% of your users are serviced by 20% of your work. Since each Slashdotters work environment varies, what specific task you should be working on will vary too. From what background information you've provided, I think it would be a good start to prioritize security because it would affect everyone on the company LAN and those connecting on the VPN. Find/resolve security problems, implement user documentation for smart password maintainence, standardize software used for secure tunnels, etc...

Once that is resolved, you should move on towards the next immediate problem that affects the most users. Maybe it's upgrading/fixing the server(s). You'll probably have to upgrade hardware or install new patches to keep the developers happily developing on a fast machine while the administrative staff can wait for the MS Office update, etc...

    Good luck.

I was looking forward to playing SWG too and have been waiting for a MMORPG to truly immerse myself in since I was too late to join UO and EQ. I had high hopes for SWG and I was surprised Sony lifted the NDA before the game was actually released. Once the NDA was released I checked out the Sony Station boards for SWG which already had some reviews posted by the beta testers.

The beta testers' reviews of SWG weren't complimentary at all. There were a lot of negative posts and the most damaging evidence of that is how Sony has removed access to the old message boards (http://boards2.station.sony.com/ubb/starwars). However, forums at SWG fan sites have preserved some of these original, honest reviews. Check it out: SWG Fan Site with Honest Review Deleted by Sony. My compliments to Stratics.com. And I'm sure other SWG fan sites will have honest reviews too.

They've been around for a while and I think it's great. I still go there to read reviews before I make any purchasing decisions and they also have helpful advice articles written by nominated Experts on different topics like credit card debt or succeeding in college.

Read their history, they've been around since the dotcom boom and are founded by former employees at top technology companies. Unlike other dotcom companies, they've adapted and survived by making tough but sound financial decisions. When I first signed up, each review was awarded 30 cents per view by an Epinions registered visitor, but then people began abusing it. Slowly they've adjusted and lowered the payment rate and have implemented a new reward system.

I'm not surprised that companies are starting to quote Epinions' users regarding their products. They have a well established "Web of Trust" system and top reviewers are entrusted by the general Epinions' public to give objective reviews. Check it out!

I think you're trolling but I'll respond. A bullet is a bullet is a bullet. In 2011, 40 year old weaponry will be an M-16 / M-60 / AK-47 / AK-74. Last time I check those weapons fire projectiles that will kill a human being. I'm pretty sure the same results will happen 8 years from now too.

The point is not to worry about future opponents, the point is to be modular, to quick deploy and to be tactical - all at the same time. Send soldiers to police a public demonstration in NYC, equip them with body armor, gas mask and non-lethal projecticles. Send soldiers to police Baghdad, same equipment as above but include lethal projecticles, GPS with maps and translation software.

No, the average grunt still has an M-16A2. One out of a four soldiers carries the M203 grenade launcher and one person out of an eight man squad carries a M249 SAW (hench, Squad Automatic Weapon). Four squads roughly make up a platoon sized element and in each platoon there are one or two M60 (7.62 cal crew based machine gun) gunners depending on the mission and expected opposition.

Its plenty of firepower to cover your ass if something goes wrong with your weapon. Typical battle drills are done so that soldiers can diagnose weapon problems in under 30 seconds. Very rarely will a soldier have to switch weapons and they can't exactly pick up another soldier's weapons and use them in combat right away because they have to zero the weapon sights to their personal line of sight.

Oh and don't put down the bayonet. ;)

You're forgetting about the lawyer fees associated with launching such an attack. Yeah the big company has deeper pockets but it's not like companies are swimming in cash to launch a physical DDoS at their whim. There are significant "overhead" costs such as bad publicity and loss of reputation. And the company has to have some legal basis to file a lawsuit otherwise it's libel/slander city. However, if the company has a case against an individual, I would think ONE lawsuit is enough to cause the loss of the individual's resources (time, money, lack of stress).

Besides, launching an DDoS attack on the internet is relatively cheap in comparison. Once you have a large group of zombied computers on broadband you can control them to do your bidding with relatively no cost to yourself, unless you count the time used to conceal your activities.

A Pinball Game: First game I played on computers when my dad brought home our first family computer when I was six. It was fun and I started to like computers, lol.

Some BASIC game where you have to defend your kingdom from barbarians: You had to grow your kingdom and peasants would become squires and squires would become knights and every ten years barbarians would attack. Simple game but the first game where I looked at the BASIC source and actually made changes to it. My first experience in programming.

Sun Tzu's Ancient Art of War: Taught me how to spell "enemy" because I had to type that word a lot when making custom campaigns. Got me interested in Custer's Last Stand and various historical figures (Caesar, Alexander the Great, Sun Tzu, etc)

Quest for Glory, Kings Quest, Police Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry: Helped me become a fast, albeit unorthodoxed typist.

Half-Life and mods: Will always remember the one year of college I spent playing this game and it's mods!

Civ: Helped spark interest in history and anthropology!
