Congress can only propose amendments with a super majority (2/3 in each house) and an amendment can only take effect with a super majority of the states (3/4). Further, the states can actually bypass the congress completely to propose amendments (never been done).

Of course, these systems can be configured not to alert when an empty room is unlocked, and I'm sure $40/night shitholes go that route because it's not worth it to deal with a squatter over $40 anyway, but you can be sure the alerts are enabled at any of the places your typical egocentric hacker would target.

Likely, they do care because a squatter still has to be cleaned up after and as well as any damage they cause has to be repaired.

Everquest has what they call progression servers where they start a server out without any expansions and gradually add the expansion content over time. Perhaps this is what WoW is planning to do. Having played on the most recent progression server, it seems like it has managed to bring back people who hadn't played in years for the nostalgia of how EQ was years ago.

Hard to explain how a former state legislator with no noteworthy accomplishments and current freshmen Jr. US Senator (again, with no real accomplishments) is suddenly thrust into the nomination for the party without considering the identity politics angle as a major driver. I doubt the Democratic party will have another all white male ticket again as the party now sees group identity of people first and foremost.

  13. "If you make 15$/hr, and it takes you 4 hours to shop, travel, prep and package your week of food, you've cost yourself $60 on top of your grocery prices." ...
"The more your base salary/wage is, the LESS justified your are in making your own meals. "

I don't think it is as cut and dry on this point. This labor cost isn't fully realized unless making your own meal means you sacrifice earning money during that time which likely isn't the case. If you never had any intention to earn money with that time, the only cost is the value you assign to not spending time on that task. Some also might prefer to cook on their own or have harder to meet dietary preferences that add to the complexity of going out. Some might also attack the labor cost side of this by either getting more ingredients that need less preparation (pre-cooked chicken in your example) or cutting down on shopping time with new technology and services like doing shopping online (I pick my groceries up now, I never go in the store).

I fully agree with you on the main though, the costs associated with pickup and eating out make it an attractive option.

  14. They seem to be saying that the streamlined ordering process led to more sales which needed more workers to process. They may have less people taking orders but more fulfillers now and are making more money.

That said, the bit about more bank customers and ATMs is flawed. My guess would be that the technology that has driven more people to banks is direct deposit which is almost universal now (do people even get paychecks now?) rather than ATMs. I wonder how the rise of a cashless society with every place taking debit/credit cards will affect ATMs and bank tellers.

There is are reasons they don't offer an electric version of a conventional vehicle but a major one would be that the directly comparison becomes possible between electric/non-electric. When people can look at the price jump to go from gas to electric, the extra cost becomes hard to justify. I suspect this was a problem for Honda when they offered hybrid versions of the Civic and Accord.

  17. It isn't that democracy is being entrusted to for-profit organizations, it is that politicians are trying to use technology for technologies sake. If you want to create high-tech voting booths, you have to have a team of specialists to audit and maintain them. For this task, computer/human readable paper ballots are the sweet spot we should be looking toward. Humans can use them in the absence of tech in order to audit the machine that can count and tabulate much faster with great accuracy.
