    Some lackwit managed to delete /vmunix and /genvmuniz on a remote server - presumably to tidy up or something. Months or years down the track, we needed to reboot and *kaboom*. Dead.

    I'd like to point out that there are a multitude of systems where votes are turned into governments, and that the rest of the world calls them ALL democracies as long as their not systematically fixed in favour of one party.

    Personally, I think 99% of free software's appeal to people who work for big, oblivious corporations is the fact that it's not just free as in beer or liberty... it's also free of bureaucratic grief.

    Plus licensing. Ever played with flexlm, or tried to figure out how many Microsoft CALs you need? No need with GNU - saves a ton of time and potential liability.

    There are thousands of organizations that fund research privately. Competing with taxpayer-funded research is difficult, though, but not impossible.

    In applied sciences, such as biotech, engineering and parts of physics, chemistry, sure. In "blue skies" areas, fuck all basically. The only people doing e.g. serious number theory research are probably the NSA. Other branches of maths haven't even got that advantage going for them.

    Unless you're on Linux or Mac, where there's no peer to peer software available (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_iPlayer). Please do some basic fact checking before posting, eh?

    Yeah, because when your domain controller goes down because of a fucked up Microsoft Service Pack (W2K SP4, I'm looking at you), they are SO bloody helpful when you phone them up.

    Face it, unless you're a major customer (we only had a 3000 seat license), you'll be doing a good deal of trouble-shooting on your own whether commercial or open source.

    Someone got a mail past our spamfilters at uni, pretending to be from the helpdesk, which contained a URL to some malicious code with instructions to download and run it.

    Not only did loads of Windows users run the damn thing, but we got loads of helpdesk tickets from Mac users asking for a Mac version.
