I've found Ant to be like the "regex" of build tools. In the right hands, it can be an enormous time saver especially with repeatable tasks like build, deploy scenarios. It's not for everybody but if you are willing to meet it half way and put in some time reading the Oreilly book on Ant, then you will be rewarded ten fold.
I've played the stupid game with RS employees for years. We refer to it as the "Shack Attack". In fact when I used to be on the road as a slave^H^H^H^HConsultant, every time I'd be sent to a new town, I'd seek out the local mall and seek out the shack and prey on unsuspecting salespeople trying to play Joe average as a chump. Sweet retrobution for the little guy is the way I see it.
This is, of course, not to be confused with going into B. Dalton, Waldenbooks or other such over priced chains, walking into the computer book section and telling everyone in sight about the 30-40% discounts on computer books at Bookpool.com. Yes. I am a bastard.
The first article mentions that they had the AS/400 for over 20 years. The AS/400 was not even available 20 years ago. The third article mentions that they were supposed to have bought a new "mainframe" for around $10,000. Where the hell are they going to find a modern "mainframe" for that much ??? I mean one that is not made out of cheese.
Alan Cooper is widely known as the "Father or Visual Basic", not bill. He (Alan) also wrote a pretty kick ass (for the time) book on usability called "About Face". It's still worth a read today IMHO.
I should use the spam that has been splattering into my inbox over the last week "Increase your ejaculation volume by 581% !!!". I could probably base a poem on that one. I would know how to start. That part is easy.
I'm just not sure I could stop.
Actually, we found very few problems installing WebSphere under Solaris 2.6 (SPARC). Now, under Windows NT Server 4.0...that's a whole different story. We tried to install WAS 3.5 on several NT boxen over the course of a year's time and only got it to marginally work. Then we applied the 3.5 service pack # 2 and trashed the complete install.
Very frustrating but not as frustrating as dealing with IBM's WAS tech support. And we paid for this stuff ???
Doesn't this really come down to recongnizable patterns ? The OO folk have been using patterns to express how things are built or at least could be built based upon repeatable patterns. Buildings certainly fall into this category. Software should as well. Thos that have found their way to places like "the gang of four book" and other patterns books will recognize that there really isn't any reason why software should be being built more shodily than most buildings.
Check out Jive for an excellent example of beautiful coding in Java. There are a lot of forum software packages out there but none as complete (in terms of code design).
I've been
able to look at this code and immediately understand, admire and learn from Matt Tucker's code from day one. Makes a good read.
The GOF book is great, but I would like to see it revised to b based more on Java and not so much on SmallTalk. I would also recommend getting it on CD (as I did). The CD is unabridged and very easy to search and navigate.
Does anyone know if Snow Crash is available on CD or tape and if so, where ? I have the bok and it is awesome but I think it might be cool to listen to on CD for long drives.
I smell a Wumpus !

So, what's your favorite screwdriver tip ?
I'm blogging for the cure. Are you?
All of the cure ? or just Robert Smith ?
Perhaps they could sell ads in the game by having all the "hard guys" wear Viagra T-shirts to identify them.

You mean RoboCode. Info here. Awsome for learning Java "under fire" as it were.

That might depend on how funny your ass looks.
Why no truly relevant search results for Amish techno music ?
Unfortunately, our corporation is quite heavy with "VP"s so I'd think we would have to sort descending by title to optimize things a bit.

"You sure do have a purty primary key. Were gonna make you SQueal !" (with the obvious banjo music playing in the background)

I guess instead of "capture the flag" quake tournaments we will be seeing the "Tour de Frag" ?
I've often wondered what Google's cached copy of Google would end up looking like....must be off to do some research !

X10 has done this. Probably the only good use of "pop-under" ads that I have ever seen.
Adobe: Dmitry..here is your free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Please don't sue us !
Oh, and don't forget to accept the terms of the license agreement before installing it.

Has anyone tried a TRACERT on his address ? It would b interesting to see the results (the path to God...) and all that.
