"Commentators" may say so. But keep in mind that this is the same House of Lords who ruled that charging wrongfully convicted prisoner for "bed & breakfast" costs was the proper thing to do.
Is this not a blatant transgression of the 4th Amendment?? Back to the dark days of the writs of assistance..
Copyright infringement as a criminal act - that's just wrong. And scary. Too long has this corporate fellatio been going on..
And as an additional WTF:
"This is a strong, common sense measure that provides new tools and resources to help protect one of this nation's most important economic engines," says Mitch Bainwol, chairman/CEO of the RIAA.
Britney Spears/Justin Timberlake/Beyonce/Dude, Where's My Car?/Gigli are the USA's most important economic engines? Or at least, the engine's constituents??
Goddamn. Just, goddamn.
p.s: TFA's dated May 6th. Isn't this coming a tad late on/.?
Waaay too much "rich content" for my tastes. When visiting a site for information, I, for one, do NOT want:
Videos auto-running
Random elements zooming around
Mouseover actions that surprise (I still don't think mainstream WWW pages are ready for a http://www.dontclick.it/ - like UI)
This also sounds suspiciously a LOT like Google Knol. Encyclopaedia Britannica is reacting to Wikipedia the way Microsoft reacted to Google/Firefox. Giant established behemoth in its field getting its comeuppance from upstarts due to its inability to adapt to changing times, and trying to pick itself off the ground to play catch-up..
A coding reality show on TV! Watch the dragon takeon the hydra! Damn, that would make some compelling television. I'd even accept it on pay-per-view!
"Watch seasoned developers and greenhorn programming prodigies square off their skills against each other! The algorithms will clash and the development environments will see sparks fly!"
I'd say the second episode of this series would be a vi vs emacs thing..
What do you want them for? Give them away no strings attached to your nearest youth center, or even public school. Let them know what the assorted problems are, and let them deal with it.
If you have the time, you could even help in refurbishing these laptops with a decent baseline Slackware (or some such) install. If not, put them in touch with someone who has the necessary werewithal.
This is a win-win - you get rid of unused hardware cluttering up your living space, and the recipients gain access to potentially valuable learning tools. The Linux gospel spreads, people learn, and everybody is better off on the whole. There, now doesn't that give you a warm, fuzzy feeling??:D
Ditto. When I lived in Chennai in India, my laptop would get ant swarms all around. And when did I realize I had lost some of my keys? When I tried to log in, and the OS wouldn't accept my password, 'cos of course, a key wasn't working.
Walked over to a neighbour's system, looked up keycode for the 'h' key, walked back and logged in. I got lucky though - the keys for the keycode were not affected by the ants!
(FWIW, a ThinkPad service centre promptly replaced the affected keys, blinking a bit at the bizarre story. Evidently, ants do NOT void your warranty:-D)
I know this will sound stupid, but really, a text-only email client is pushing it.
We had pathetic dialup lines in India for a long long time, and I still managed to use the Internet fairly comfortably. I used to be online almost 24/7 (except when phone calls whacked out the connection, but there came along programs to deal with that, also) on a dialup line not too long ago.
IRC, IM, E-mail (Webmail, POP3), regular WWW browsing - I did it all. Dialup doesn't automatically mean pine + lynx + bitchX + licq. Thunderbird + Firefox + mIRC + AIM/Yahoo/MSN/Gtalk/whatever works just as well. I even ran an Fserve in mIRC in EFnet over my line. People got pitiful download speeds from me, but it was possible!
In a nutshell: All is not lost, it'll just take a wee bit longer to find:)
I'd just be happy if they made the Gtalk client more usable in general. A bajillion months out in user-land and still no friggin' way to maximize a window? Still cannot organize contacts? Still no way to send a message to a bunch of users? You have GOT to be kidding me! What kind of IM tool is this anyway, that's actually worse than its web-based counterpart? (The Google Talk Gadget)
..from "decent" sources, and still the submission with a CoolTechZone review makes it to the front page. CoolTechZone sucks, leave it out of here, even if the occasional Microsoft-bashing does go on there..
Especially with the highly provocative story title..

Earth or not, the geek are sure inheriting space!

You guys have it cushy. In India, it's 256 kbps that's considered broadband!
Are you saying Paris Hilton's worked Steve Jobs? Scary thought!
And a five digit UID, no less! ;)
And this story is filed under "Politics" because...?
And anal! In the same sentence :))
