spending $60 a year on a game you might spend 60 hours a month playing (or more) isn't really that expensive.

    Subscription: $13 x 12 = $156 (It's actually a smidge more, since the lowest cost is I believe around $13.50)
    Expansion: ~$30-$40
    Total: $180-200 per year.

That's the same price of buying 3-4 stand-alone games.

Let's see .. Battlefield2, FEAR, KOTOR2, DEFCON -- I'm already treading close to that. Count in a console game or two, if you like, and I'm already over. So, my playing WoW hasn't really made me spend much more or less money than I used to. Of course, I did tend to spend entirely too much, in retrospect. ;) And, had I instead bought CS:Source, I _might_ have had similar addiction w/o the monthly fee ... but, no story, no lore... and I was kinda burned out on CS at the time.

You're out of date. More and more minors are getting credit cards.

A credit card requirement doesn't prevent a child from getting access to Naughty Stuff. It prevents them from doing it without their parents knowledge. When the parent sees Playboy on the kid's credit card, she/he will know that something is up, and have the opportunity to (a) cancel the charge (and thus the acces), and (b) go have a talk with the kid.

I'm all for requiring some sort of thing like that, for some sites ... unfortunately, I don't really TRUST that sort of site with my credit card numbers. ;)

That said, it's a typical, puritannical American response to suggest that people should "man up," hunker down and stay in a failing relationship because the "institution" of marriage is somehow sacred or important. If two people want a divorce because they're no longer attracted to one another, or because they have disagreements about money, or family, or any number of other very fundamental things, it's incredibly stupid to suggest that they should stay together "for the marriage."

I agree with much of what you said, especially about people not being ready for a long term relationship, or of having a lot of growing still to do. However, the latter portion (quoted) led to some objections.

I agree, that if two people realize that they aren't meant to be together, and that they aren't happy, or have other unresolvable differences (number of viable partners, etc ;)), it's certainly proper for a divorce to happen.

That said, it seems like the general tendency of many Americans (I can't broaden this to the rest of the world, since I don't live there) to throw up their hands in defeat at the first sign of resistance. I believe the "man up and do something about it" part was accurate, in that a healthy marriage takes work (just like most any good relationship). If you get in a fight, you have to be willing to make up. You have to be willing to think about compromise, and likely will need to meet in the middle on many topics. (Or, decide which ones are important to you enough to object to, versus which ones Don't Matter in the long run -- color of towels, house painting, etc, anything that Makes the Wife Happy.)

I didn't take the "Man up!" imperative as a direction to stay with any marriage, and keep it alive no matter the cost, but more of a reminder that we have to actually put in effort to keep our marriage healthy.

I think this ties in with your theory: I suspect many people marry before they are emotionally mature enough to be willing to think of TWO needs, instead of just ONE. =)

It's interesting that you say this. I feel the exact opposite. I /loved/ the original Unreal Tournament. When I bought UT2004, or '03, or something, I just couldn't get into it.

Part of it was that my favourite skin was unplayable, now that he was the Bad Guy. But mainly it was that the pace of the game felt different. I had a harder time differentiating between weapons and their tactics of use, I really missed the pistols, and in general the graphics were TOO overwhelming. I feel like an old guy on his porch yelling at kids, but it's how I feel.

I like the original UT because it has less glowing balls of death, fiery bolts of whoopah, and generally lit, shiny, glowing, plasma-ish everything. The enemies also seemed to bunny-hop more in the later UTs, but that be just me. The graphics, though, really seemed to distract from the gameplay. I can't SEE where I'm shooting, because everything was super-huge, and shot giant balls of gire. =) I just miss my chaingun, shock rifle, and pistols. =D (that, and the rocket launcher mechanics in UT were more to my liking.)

I must be in a minority, though.

That he is truely unable to pay his rent. (i.e. open the books up)
List of donations and amounts already received, up to date
Details on how the money is definately going to Robert Anton Wilson and no one else.
Details on any and all "administrative fees" or anything else taken out before the money is put towards the rent.

That's a lot of good information to have, and would help assauge worries that this might be a scam. That said, if I (or family) were very ill, and short enough on money to pay rent, I don't think I would have the resources to hire an accountant or provide this level of detail.

It's prudent to wait for proof. However, in the absence of proof, I'm willing to risk a few dollars (I think I was suckered for 20?) in the interest of being generous.

Pros: If this is true, I've been merciful and generous, and helped someone.
Cons: If I've been suckered, the net loss to me is something I'm willing to lose. (I think I wasted more than that when I forgot to cook some meat last month. :-/ )

I realize that this sort of analysis would also play directly into the hands of a scammer; I just don't care, in this case. I'd rather Do Something and risk being wrong... maybe it's just that I was in a generous feeling mood.
