You can add a microphone, if you really want to.

You can run Linux on it, too.

But the biggest problems I have with it is that I've had mine repaired twice in one year, there is no VPN software that does not cause it to reboot spontaneously, and the Linux that runs for it has no wireless support (of any kind). Other than that, it's been pretty handy for me. I hate the fact that Palm has all but stopped development on the platform and hasn't come out with their new Linux-based platform yet. I would really like to be able to run something like Octave or Python or Kismet.

I have an HP 49G+ that I bought to replace my aging HP 48G. It's not perfect, but if you upgrade the ROM, I've found that it suits my needs very well. The early ROMs had a problem with key debounce being overzealous. It also took a while to get used to the ENTER key being in the bottom right corner instead of the usual place.

It's nice that it supports all the old HP 48 commands, too. I ended up making printed/bound copies of the manuals myself, since they don't sell them.

The USB cable interface and the SD card slot are nice, too. I use it primarily for statistics and electromagnetics and whenever I don't feel like whipping out Matlab.

I have to disagree for the most part. I can't count the number of times motorcycles have been able to come up behind my car on the highway without me hearing them. These were not quiet bikes either: they were modded Harleys with big engines and straight pipes.

With the direction of the exhaust pipes on bikes going straight behind them, nearly all their noise is projected back and to the sides, especially at highway speeds. Plus, when they're cruising or decelerating they put out much less noise than at wide-open throttle.

Ergo, I still get the "Holy shit, where did he come from?" effect when they go by me, unless I first saw them in my mirrors. So I think the "safety" reasoning for the noise is erroneous.

    2) 1.5 GB a week is a lot. The limit is actually now 2.0 GB a week, and there are plenty of ways to make things not count against you.
I don't feel like I should have to cheat the system to download a 4 GB iso file. I can't tell you how many hours I spent in the computer lab downloading an .iso that wasn't on the Linux mirror, only to have it fail to burn to a dvd or fail to copy to my portable hard drive.
Sure, there are tricks to get around it (like SSH into the Linux cluster, download file to /var and then SCP to copy locally), but why should I have to do that?

    3) Do you even know why that bandwidth cap was instated? Back in the days of the original Napster (not the subscription Napster (which is free at Penn State), there was a group of 8 students that were using up the bandwidth for the entire University. Fair enough, but they have a pretty fat pipe now. Why should they continue to limit it as they do TEN YEARS LATER?

    4) Draconian policies? You mean "Don't download illegal materials?" That's pretty draconian, let me tell ya. You know, your cable line has the same policy on it.
Not being able to run a server at all is quite draconian enough for me. With their firewall, I can't even sync my Palm over the network, login to my machine remotely via VNC or SSH, or just FTP some personal documents. Useless. It's a good thing I moved off campus, because their IT policies infested even grad-student housing. People couldn't even use X programs through a server on the other side of campus. There were constant complaints about this sort of thing.

Oh, and since nobody actually downloads copyrighted material, just those linux .isos everyone uses as their defense of BitTorrent, there's an on-campus linux mirror with a few different distros. That bandwidth doesn't count. Yeah, like it's completely illegitimate to download a TV show that I missed because my MythTV server wasn't working.
