Yah, but you can pretty much already do that with bit-for-bit copies anyway. The decryption is done entirely by the player itself (which is legal)... the output is just dumped to disk or piped to a mpeg encoding program. Though I havn't ripped any DVDs myself, I think this is the preferred method of doing things.

It is not news that the Can-US border is inaccurate. That has been known for decades upon decades. Though the border was most likely stated where it was in a treaty or something similar (I dont feel like doing research), it not matching up to the actual physical location means nothing. When they establish the border it is set in stone and it doesn't matter where it actually ends up.

I understand that this is a joke, but people changing countries is just not going to happen :)

I used to live right on the Candian-American border (in Canada). The American part was just a little penisula that was totally cut off from the rest of the US. Anyway, the "official" border extended 15 feet into what should have been Canadian territory. So, the Americans had a bit more land than they should have. Overall if you take into account the whole border, I think Canada wins out and gets more space than it should just because they surveys that were taken were just not accurate enough.

What I would like to see is more "student" pricing on software packages that are very expensive (CAD, 3D stuff etc). Software makers could be making money by doing this, but they aren't and are left with people willing to buy it but not at that price. If the guidlines are strict (educational instutues only or at home for students w/ proof of student status) they will not lose any money from people trying to cheat the system. If they did this, then they probably wouldn't have to turn to piracy for many of the schools in Malaysia. In a world such as ours, they have to keep up or otherwise be caught in the early 20th century like Afghanistan. If piracy is the only means of this, sure, I think the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

"At least until those concerned have a word with Canadian customs."

It is perfectly legal if you don't resell it. They would have to change the law for customs agents to seize media at the border. It should be noted that regular hard drives that one would buy for a desktop computer or laptop computer do not count. They are talking about things like the IBM microdrives etc. that are used in MP3 players and such.

Anyway, the levy is pure shit. I agree that the artists should get payed for their music, but not like this. The thing I hate most about this is they are being complete assholes about this and just upping the rate and scope of the tax every year so that it will be seem to be less extreme. I call that sleaze.

Too many people are being affected by this that really shouldn't. For instance, digital camera owners, independent recording artists who have to buy their own CDs from stores, and people who do not actually steal are all victims here.

The new proposed rates for 2003 are far too extreme, in some case quadrupling the price for media. It just doesn't make any sense. Raping and pillaging the public is not the answer. Personally, I will never buy any media with this new tax. I will get my stuff shipped from the US or any other country that doesn't have the tax. Even if the cost of shipping is more, I will still get it shipped over just out of principle. I refuse to pay such draconian taxes.

If you bothered to read the article you would have found that. Writing a new operating system would probably be less work than it would be to port Linux with all the features they want (USB 2.0, FM tuner, etc) and have it stable.

Also, its not that they are afraid of MS... not everything has to revolve around Linux. They made a choice that was good for them and thats about it. Even if it ran Linux I doubt MS would give a crap about some market they dont even compete in (ie, this is not a PDA)

I am not sure about the US, but here in Canada we have "DSL resellers" that basically just resell DSL to people at the same or greater cost than the telephone companies do. The problem with their business model is that they are reselling something and barely (if at all) getting a discount for their own services so there is really no point of going with them in 99% of cases when the same thing is available for less. I can see very clearly why they are all going out of business (if that is the case, i haven't been paying much attention to it)
