Compared to some of the things that tax money is wasted on, a 2 hour special on Martian drag racing would be an improvement. I know I'd clear an evening for it. Hel, could have some betting thing arranged to recoup some of the investment (just pray they work and you don't have to refund).
I'm pretty sure the Inuit would like to extend a large 'fuck you' (or its own equivalent). It isn't so much expansion up in Nunavut but their long time homes.
Pretty sure brown bears are the ones suffering human encroachment from us southlanders expanding...polars I think are the ones expanding into us as their homes melt.
Government does tend to be actively concerned about the bears.
Firstly, comedy is really subjective...I've seen people fall down laughing at things I found dull, and other times I was the one laughing in a silent room. Good example is Spaceballs..plenty thought it was hillarious (during its time).
Secondly, sci-fi shows tend to rely on their gimmicks, focusing the special effects to let us know 'this is sci-fi'. Add in the suspension of disbelief necessary, it's hard to bridge that little gap to 'be funny' to the viewer. Generally the jokes would either just be 'sci-fi' versions of normal jokes, slapstick style humour...or have to satirise other movies. It would require a series of episodes or movies to establish a 'baseline' from which you could make humour.
Overall I agree with you, truly humourous sci-fi is rare (and HHGTG i hated since i prefer the radio play and books), and they might be better off doing an action or dramatic sci-fi. However, it also depends on the amount of humour they plan to inject....small amounts should work.
Hmmm... actually running with something similar...
Warning: workers for PETA, stop reading.
Screw it, keep reading, like i care:P
If this place is dug up, it won't be instantly, it will be incrementally as they dig deeper into it. Be it primatives chipping away, ancient treasure thieves, a modern or even future civilisation, they'll start from the outside and head inward (disregarding teleportation/whatever).
So leave 'hints'. Have chambers just inside the perimeter, but not past the major safeguards. Expose animals* to extremely high lethal doses of radiation, sheer overkill. Place the corpses in the chamber with a small amount of the radioactive material, labeled with your 'warning'. On the inner wall of the chamber, in a much larger size, have that same warning.
Mysterious dead and a 'sick chamber' where they feel ill should spook primatives. More advanced scientifically cultures should be able to get the hint something is amiss. Our level of technology or beyond shouldn't even need the hint. If they still refuse to stop, well...it's beyond our control and responsibility.
*could also use death row convicts in lieu of animals
Mhmm..but (i'm unfamiliar with LJ and such) don't most LJ users login so as to leave comments on other people's blogs and such?
They would be surfing with thei adblockers on, login to post a comment, and could then be considered in violation.
Otherwise the only issue I can see with this is how they enforce someone linking an adblocking software- just because someone has an adblocker doesn't necessarily mean it will be used to block all things. (Personally i only block offensive (loud, animated, large) ads and permit the rest...they need revenue afterall).
Mostly this just seems to be aimed at people using a custom page style and designing it to block out ads.
Never unanimous..but if you brainwash them heavy enough, you'll get enough fanatics:D
And agreed on the southern slavery issue and others..it isn't exactly like the US unilaterally started these things...like you hint at, instead of a Boston Tea Party, maybe would have been the Memphis Slave Auction or something, precipitating a war....
Maybe Europe would have kept all its territory at the end, but then succumb to the Japanese (either from a British-owned Americas being depleted more to fight the faster war in europe...or a Japanese Empire deciding to not cross the Pacific, but instead attack a weary Europe and Russia (has the USA not intervened).
Too many variables, not enough omniscience:)
Sorry for having missed your 'always opposition to war' point, you're right, even if it's the last minute convert in the foxhole, someone always will come to the opinion the war wasn't the brightest idea
Europe was winning (if this is in reference to WWII), USA's late entry just speed it up. At best (read worst) more would be russian in parts (assuming the slower Allies attack would allow the russians to gain more ground), and the freedom delayed until the USSR collapsed.
USA is only 57% of the population of north america (ALL of it, not just USA+Canada), and not even half of landmass. Of that Canada got it's seperation from Britain peacefully, and nothing to do with that failure in 1812. Mexico was Spanish i believe, which meant not even half of north america would still belong to england.
As England abolished slavery without a war 30 years prior to the american civil war (in 1833), if the USA were still British-ruled, slavery would have been abolished much earler.
As for Saddam..well..Middle East doesn't seem overly improved with him imprisoned.
..because a lot of movies now days seem to lack any semblence of story?
The games get stories and the movies get the good graphics (i.e. special effects).
I agree that some games have no need for a story, but others (like RPGs) do; it all depends on the genera of the game.
As for games being compared to movies...Final Fantasy 7 I ratherly disliked-it was more like a sequence of cutscenes interrupted by leveling up. Give me the old Phantasy Star III where choices I made actually had different outcomes.
Some sites already do that.
Result? Sites that give you a pass/login to bypass it.
Or you get competition sites that use a more reasonable advertising approach...netting them their own and their competitor's customers, while still getting revenue from the advertisments.
Locking your site and forcing people to pay will only work if you devote money to policing those accounts (to see which are leaked) and if you have a monopoly on the product (i.e. contents of the site).
...otherwise people will just go to the mirroring site that is free. I do it all the time when reading Google News: if the link says (subscription) I just move along to the next one on the list.
Your ad is a static image? ....Is the image less then 30% of the page?
You can stay.
Is your ad animated? ....Is it not bright and looping?
You can stay.
Huge ads or ones that distract too much to read content get added to Adblock.
I recognise your desire to advertise to make money, now please recognise that it is your content why i visit your page, not to subject myself to annoying 'Tagworld faux chat dialogues' etc.
Maybe they will rethink their business model once they realise of 1000 visits, only 10 ads were successfully uploaded to the visitor.
Didn't Scotty later admitt (when talking to another engineer) that he always really padded his estimates, that way when he came in ahead of schedule he was a 'miracle worker'?
Stephan's Penultima series was a riot...a total satire on RPG... i was sold when i saw the edge of the map having lil hex grids. The humour factor nailed me for that one.
Whenever I think of NWN it's his series that comes to mind.
Googleporn.com - It's about time!
I thought we already had Google Images??
You mean cyber? 0:-)
*recalls the Cecil incident

False positives don't necessarily mean that; all it means is that it occassionally detects something wrong.
...unless of course by 'working' you mean it at least does SOMETHING and isn't totally broken, then yes, it does mean that :P
To use a broken analogy, it's like saying the police system catches all the bad guys because they occassionally arrest an innocent.

wah wah wah The country being below sea level doesn't seem to bother the dutch much =P
!! You just reconciled the creation myth!!
...that's 3,360,000 Earth years old...
:'(
The Earth is 6,000 years old...just which 'year' wasn't explicity stated...so if we use Xena
oh wait, that still a lil short
Just throw your bowler at it as you shoot ;)
So in essence, Freewill versus Predestination
Wonder if their is some cultural/religious root to this, or if just reading waaaaay too deep into it.
:D I was picturing someone a little less 1337... but...
...that was worth it just for Romeo asking A/S/L :)
Thanks for the link
You should produce an animated short series... "The Classics for the ADHD"...little 5 minute fillers between tv shows.
:P
Do Dickens next
Anonymous posters don't get karma, so i can't see how (s)he was karma whoring.
:)
Anyhow, thanks for the info AC, i had no clue (and little compulsion to look it up), but the link was more interesting then i thought

The old 'love of the game' idea, of players giving it their all, etc.
Strikes and politics fly in the face of that.
