    These drives have actually been on the market for well over a year now, and I was (un)lucky enough to pick one up last year when my local Fry's Electronics got them in stock. While the drives themselves are handy because of the amount of data you can squeeze into them, making my macbook pro a beast of a mobile studio (at the time I was using it for music production), they seem to be prone to issues. The first drive lasted about a month, before I almost lost several weeks worth of a project I was working on due to the drive crashing. I was able to retrieve my work from the drive by mounting it externally before it became completely unreadable, and I attribute this to the high density drives not being able to handle the average bouncing around of a laptop in a backpack. When I attached the drive to one of my linux workstations, I could hear the disks spinning up but dmesg wouldn't pick up the drive and they just kept spinning endlessly louder and louder. The second drive lasted about 2 months before a similar problem occurred, though by that time I had migrated most of my work to a different workstation. I replaced the drive with the original 500gb drive my macbook came with, and I haven't had any problems since. In short, I'm not sure if the early drives off the assembly line were just prone to failure more often or if perhaps I was just extremely unlucky with the ones I procured. Either way, I am rather uncomfortable about putting any important data on one of these drives in the future until they've been on the market for a while and have been thoroughly tested.

    Why do people keep spending money on EA Games? They treat the gaming community like utter crap at every opportunity, yet people continue to keep eating it up constantly. I refuse to spend a dime on any EA product, and I have no doubt many /.'ers share my sentiments.

    Ministry of Sound has been struggling a lot lately, http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/feb/21/ministry-of-sound-threat . They haven't really stayed relevant in the electronic music world lately, so it won't be a big loss to see them disappear in the near future irregardless of file sharers. As a music producer and dj here in Austin, I feel obligated to buy the music I play and remix (mainly because I'm friends with producers who've burned that unspoken respect into my style, Francis Preve, Josh Gabriel, etc.). When labels go out of their way to pursue file sharers, I feel obligated to go out of my way to find their tracks through non-conventional methods. Not everyone has money to dish out for music, but they will pay to go to shows, clubs, raves, etc. Let them appreciate the art! When was the last time Ministry of Sound put out a track that reached the top 10 charts on beatport.com ? When was the last time Toolroom Knights did? Music evolves, and it feels like they pressed the B button to hold themselves back on purpose.

    I have been getting facebook notifications for someone in Germany, I get notified of all the comments posted on their profiles. I thought this was something wrong with the facebook application itself, but this confirms my suspicions that there is a deeper issue at hand.

    Compared to the costs of getting all the components for the OpenEEG and piecing everything together, it's probably a better choice for most people to go with the Emotiv set. Besides, if you're not happy with an OpenEEG you only have yourself to be unhappy with, if you're bored with the Emotiv you can always send it back and demand a refund.

    I was in San Francisco this past weekend, and my network services were severed sharply compared to the connection I get here in Austin TX. I was unable to get emails or use the internet and every other time I tried to make a phone call, I kept getting "Call Failed". The problem was so bad that when I was in SFO, I tweeted something to the tune of "My POS iPhone never works when I need it to", to which an ATT Rep (apparently ATT has people scouring Twitter for angry ATT customers) responded with http://twitter.com/ATTJason/status/3676354487 . When ATT loses its contract with Apple, I'm dropping their POS network for a more reliable carrier with a better network and more helpful customer support. (Ever had an ATT rep call you a horses ass on the phone? They did to me back in June, to which they ended up giving me 2 months of free service to apologize)

    Don't back down to China on this one, it would be unethical to remove the videos so that the site could be seen in China. By letting the Chinese government pressure you into doing this, would mean letting their powers having a direct negative impact on us here in the West.

    Yes, but if corporate media has taught us anything, it's that regardless of popular vote, the people have no control over who gets into office or not. For the past 100 years, this entire system of beauracracy has been built up to allow things like this to happen. You want to fight the system from the inside? Well good luck spending years in court battles only to have this whole "state secrets" bullshit imposed on you. Americans are so convinced that we live in the greatest country on earth, so that things aren't as bad as they could be, so there's no point in complaining about them now. But things didn't get this bad overnight, and things aren't going to get nazi-esque for years to come, the only real question is how bad do things have to get for people to really get pissed and start to follow the doctrine: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. -- That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed", and "when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.", note that DUTY part, it's not a choice to fight off government which fails to protect our liberties, it's our DUTY.

    The article details how the researchers had to be within 2 inches of the pacemaker, and several thousands of dollars worth of equipment. I suspect there is an easier way to deactivate a pacemaker, find out what frequency they operate at. I've got an FM radio blocker, that is basically just a 100mhz oscillator, a potentiometer, and a battery. It works by canceling out a given frequency, thus letting me silence my neighbors stereo from 50ft away. I know the technique works for the 2.4ghz band, for blocking out wireless phone signals and whatnot. I suppose finding an oscillator in the high ghz range would suffice for 'killing' a pacemaker.
