  1. Just do it on How Old is Too Old? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm just about to take early retirement (55).

Sometime in the next two weeks I'll be enrolling in a DipEd (one year full time) so that I can start teaching at high school level after a lot of time working (mostly as) a chemist.

If I can do it so can you.

    Dunno about you young people.

When I was your age we had to walk 10 miles to go to school - uphill - after the early shift at the salt mines, then walk 15 miles - uphill again - to go home to eat last week's leftovers before 2 minutes' sleep before getting up before midnight for the paper round before the salt mine - and not all of us had the luxury of a home, I shared a hole in the road covered with a groundsheet with 18 others... but why am I wasting electrons, you youngsters just won't believe a word of it...

    Just do it.

And nothing was said about the heat generated by a body at Mach 170 (dunno how to estimate it, but I'm almost willing to bet folding money it'd be more than a gentle warmth)?

What? Suspend disbelief? It's just a comic?

  4. Re:Not up to the FIA on Microsoft to Supply Electronics to Formula 1 · · Score: 1

It shouldn't be up to the FIA to decide, the teams should make their own decisions, whether that be choosing a Microsoft OS or another.

  5. Re:Never liked these, myself... on Spain Adds 'Copyright Tax' to Blank Media · · Score: 1

I've never been a fan of these blank media taxes, but there is a way that could make this more palatable, to me at least.

    ...

So, I'd feel more comfortable if half of the funds levied by these taxes could benefit the unsigned, the unheard. Start with public school music programs, which are woefully underfunded as it is, and often fall victim to budget cuts. That's how I started out, a nine-year-old trumpet player in a grade school orchestra. Maybe there could be some sort of indie label lottery, where some band's vanity label gets a $10,000 infusion of funds, maybe even a promotional campaign sponsored by Maxell, Imation, TDK, Sony, or some other producer of blank media ("The stars of tomorrow use our CD-RWs today...").

Idealistic, I know. But why the hell not?

With respect, how about "But I don't copy music (or films or whatever) if I don't have permission to do so" as a reason? There is no palatable way for me.

I'd prefer that they increased the price of prerecorded media; that may push up the rate of "off site backup" creation, but since their business model is seriously broken anyway, it won't make too much difference.

What the article doesn't mention, is that as well as approving the research grant, Peter Costello also added an additional $300,000AUD from his own funds to the project.

That's interesting - much more what I'd expect from Tim.

I don't agree with the Liberal Party's politics. I don't agree with the Economic Rationalism that Costello uses to justify many of his economic decisions as Australia's 2nd most powerful politician. But I can't help respecting this man. Imagine what the world could be like if all the filthy-rich politicians were to fund things like this with no strings attached. I will never vote for his party, but if he was a Queensland senator (he isnt) I'd have no problems giving him preferences right behind the party of my choice (the preceding ststement will make no sense for people with pseudo-democratic voting systems, like the US. Oh well!).

One of the incredibly cool things is that this research didn't rely on Industry Funding, so it's not going to be held for massive profit by some corporation - rather it's going to be "cheap" as stem cell and genomic treatments go.

    Peter Costello, I salute you!

The rest bears repeating - replace "Queensland" with "Victoria" and I'd agree 100%. Surprisingly to me, even the last paragraph.

  9. Re:Break Stupid Laws - not the only avenue on The Future of Digital Books · · Score: 1

YOu should first try to get the law (etc) changed, then if necessary try to get the law challenged through acts of civil disobidience.

Being in the country populated by criminals, I've seen civil disobedience used as a first option work in the past. Sometimes quick, easy and only costly to the a***holes^w politicians who forget who is really responsible to whom.

True civil disobidience means that you are willing to pay the price of breaking the law as long as your actions will bring further attention to the mistake{s} of the law/practice in question.

Unfortunately I've also seen it not work, and it's been expensive to those who try.

But we don't stop trying. It is, after all, our civic duty.

  10. Re:Chemical Reaction? on Fuel Cell Powered Japanese Trains on Trial in July · · Score: 1

That doesn't sound right. Usually "chemical reaction" infers that new molecules will be formed. As I understand it, in the case of most fuel cells, the electron is stripped from the hydrogen to produce electricity. If these cells were utilizing the combustion of H2 and O to form H2O, wouldn't that make them a powerplant rather than fuel cells?

"Electrochemical reaction" is a subset of "chemical reaction".

If it involves the electrons of ions/atoms/molecules interacting to give a different product it's chemical. If it involves the heavy bits under the electrons it's nucular.
