  2. Re:battery cost on GM Working on Feasible Electric Car · · Score: 1

The majority of power generated in the US comes from fossil fuels. So to power an electric car, you will convert the chemical energy in fossil fuel into electric energy in a power plant, send it over thousands of miles of power lines, doing several voltage conversions along the way, convert it back into chemical energy in your cars battery, back into electric energy as it goes to the engine, and then finally into mechanical energy moving the car. This is MUCH less efficient than just converting the chemical energy directly of fossil fuel into mechanical energy in your car's internal combustion engine. In every conversion to different type of energy you lose something. Until we can eliminate our dependence on fossil fuel to generate power, electric cars are actually worse for the environment than gasoline cars. A few months ago I signed up with my utility company to have all my electricity come from renewable sources (www.alliantenergy.com/secondnature). In this case if I get a car like this then it's using renewable sources for energy. It costs a little more but it's worth it for me to know that I'm making less of an impact on the earth.

The DIY install that fails can be a nightmare to diagnose even for the uber-Geek. You want free service under warranty from the direct seller or big box retailer? You accept the default system install.
I agree with you, but I don't want the service and I would like the "choice" not to have it. I can only imagine the nightmare their tech dept will have helping customers with even preinstalled linux systems (i.e. other than windows, just because of the variety of issues that can happen). But they could still offer a choice to the customer of not getting service and not getting an OS instead of the ridiculus things you have to go through to get your "microsoft tax" back.

I'm sorry, I have a MBP. I think it "works correctly". So it gets hot, big deal. It's not a laptop. It's a notebook. Can you find one manufacturer that calls them laptops? If you get an HP for example it has an intake fan at the bottom so you really can't put it on your lap anyway because you'll block that. At least the MBP doesn't depend on the bottom for ventilation (even if for dissipation). When I have it plugged in, it's on a desk. When I use it on my lap, it's becuase I don't have a desk or power outlet, it doesn't get as hot and it's just temporary until I find a more comfortable place to work.
