Gaining the monopoly position and piles of money was supposed to ensure their dominance. Now that it is obvious that spending large sums of money on a project does not ensure its success and seeing how they flail about, I don't think Microsoft ever considered a backup plan. Their goal is to be the dominant company in software wherever that may be, and that's the problem. No one knows where the software market is going next. I too think that if I were them, I would try to give up on maintaining the monopoly and make sure my software runs on every major system out there. But, I think their hands may be tied somewhat at present due to their convicted monopolist status. So we will probably watch them crumble somewhat until they are out of the woods with the DOJ. This would again put them behind the pack. With a view toward the long term, it makes me wonder if it was worth the win-at-all-costs monopoly approach.

I miss knowing exactly what I needed to do to get promoted. I do make waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more money than I did then, but I am not as satisfied with the kind of work I do now. I program for a living (which I did not get to do then, so that is cool (I think)), but I don't particularly enjoy the fact that it is in support of an endless hustle for greenbacks.

Anyways, I don't know if maybe I didn't know any better at the time, but I still haven't seen the level of organization out here that I witnessed while I was in. A lot of the companies I have worked for in the 12 or so years since I got out were growing ones though.

The multimedia PC miracle that was being pushed to ignorant consumers buying 486SX PC's only started achieving its promise almost decade later. The Internet _is_ a big thing. .Net is not multiplatform for any of Microsoft's doing. Linux is not a toy OS. OSS is not a cancer. Java is not dead. NT wasn't bullet proof. XP wasn't secure. I had a roommate in the Army who said he *loved* to clean and for me not to worry about it, he would do all the cleaning. Okay, cool by me. Later when I was transferred from that base to another, he complained to a sergeant that I would never help clean our room/bathroom. As a punishment for my being stupid enough to take my roommate up on his offer, I was made to scour the place from top to bottom before I could leave.

My take on this is: Don't offer to freely share your software and then complain that there is no reciprocal sharing later. You did not freely share. If financial institutions are honoring the applicable licenses for the software they are using then leave them alone. Otherwise your offer was disingenuous and you become an asshole like my roommate turned out to be. If you can't sleep at night because there is no sharing in return, change the license and quit belly-aching about it because not everyone is going to get caught up in the spirit of open source software the way you would like them to.
