  1. Re:Simple enclosure on PCs For A Workshop Environment? · · Score: 1
If it's feasible, set it up so it draws in air directly from outside and into the enclosure (optionally exhaust the air to the outside as well). Failing that, get a decent filter and a stronger fan to pull the air through it. A large automotive air filter will probably be sufficient and those are fairly cheap. Suck air through the filter, don't blow into it.

The outdoor air quality may very likely be worse than that inside. You don't want to suck fog, dust, and pollen from the outside into your computer, so using outdoor air is a bad idea. Condensation is not likely to be a problem because the computer will be warmer than the air.

An easier solution is to build a small enclosure and attach air conditioner filters (the HEPA type will keep most everything out) to one side, and put a metal vent manifold over it. The large area of the air conditioner filter will allow sufficient airflow even when the filter gets dirty, and the vent manifold will keep a lot of particles from even contacting the filter.

One apartment complex I looked at had all units on the first floor serviced by one CO and the second floor was a completely different CO. Made it so the residents on the second floor didn't qualify for DSL but those on the first floor did.

Consider also that there are localities in the US that award ridiculously high damages to plaintiffs in such cases. Often these are economically depressed areas, and the resulting high risk of practicing there means fewer doctors and a lower standard of care for everyone.

Trial lawyer associations argue that everyone should have the right to unlimited damages, but they fail to mention that unfair and extreme damage awards negatively affect care for everyone.

Large jury awards are just another form of wealth consolidation. One person (and a few lawyers) get rich and it comes out of everyone else's pocket in the form of higher health care costs.

After researching several brands I recently bought a Sony TRV-22. Things I like about it include:

    1. Crisp, bright images. It was the only camera I tested which did not show severe visual artifacts. The lux rating was also significantly lower than similar Canon models, meaning the picture looks better under low light conditions. I am very impressed with the picture quality.

    2. Size. It is smaller than nearly every other similar MiniDV model. This makes it easy to carry around and shoot inconspicuously.

    3. USB/IEE1394 output. Most have this. S-video input/output and composite output also.

    4. Programmable shutter, exposure, etc.

    Things I did not like:

    1. $585 was a little more than I wanted to spend.

    2. Warranty is a crappy 1 year.

    3. Software is shite. You will not want to use the included video authoring software.

If you're simply an amateur like me, don't listen to those who say you don't need zoom. I use zoom frequently to help compose shots better. When you're filming spontaneous action it doesn't work to walk back and forth trying to get the subject in proper perspective. Get a good optical zoom b/c you will appreciate being able to fill the entire frame with your subject.

If you store video to your PC, you will only need to buy 3 or 4 tapes because you can reuse them. This may not work well on vacation if you don't bring along a laptop.

That said, there is really no reason to spend more than $700 to buy a good camera to use on vacation. The extra features, such as digital effects, you will not use while on vacation at the beach. Add your effects in post processing through software on your PC.

Study CS in undergrad. Wait until Graduate School to specialize.

It definitely helps to have a CS degree under your belt. Many companies consider this a more rigorous degree. As an engineer, I also visit campuses to recruit for my company, and individuals with networking type technical degrees with all the certs like CCNA, MCSE, DVDA, etc. are all over the place. We hire for these types of positions, but look a lot more seriously at someone with a CS degree. I'm sure you are one of the ones who actually knows how to think, but many companies think a CS degree is a better indicator of problem solving skills and believe the curriculum is more rigorous.

If you find the right prof in college, you won't have trouble specializing in any niche of CS, including networking. Don't limit yourself to one single aspect of computers this early.

  23. GMRS or FRS on Rolling Your Own Wireless Communications System? · · Score: 1

If by walkie talkies you mean the standard 49 mhz AM kind, I can understand why you have problems. Go with an FM UHF solution. It will be much clearer and you'll be able to communicate over longer distances.

To solve the interference problem you could use FRS or GMRS radios with CTCSS. As long as you pick a tone no one else in the area is using, you should not hear interference even from others using the same frequency.

If you go with GMRS, someone will have to get a GMRS license. This is easy to do (no test to take, just pay the FCC), and I think you only have to have one license for an organization. You can then set up a temporary GMRS repeater in your auditorium that will ensure everyone can communicate with everyone else. The advantage of GMRS is that it can use frequencies that your garden variety FRS walkie talkies can't use, so you will get less interference from kids, etc.

The only problems with the above are that if anyone wants to use the same channels and CTCSS encoding as you, there is nothing to stop them.
