Sometimes it is the simplest of things, a client of mine was experiencing random server "crashes".
Investigate, and find every single one was a controlled shutdown initiated by the admin user account.
I said they should change the admin account ASAP. They said they had tried but other systems where the previous admin had used the admin account would break, and they didn't have a list. To what would be affected.
I said and this is better than having someone randomly shutting down your operations, and potentially stealing anything they wanted, or leaving behind Trojans or back doors? 10 minutes later the admin account was disabled, and we just started trouble shifting and changing other system as they appeared broken, then the next user account was was found that started shutting stuff down.
Any remote access to these systems? Well the previous IT providor used to use team viewer........ Changed that account and the attacks stopped.
Sometimes it really is just the simple things.
But his company was based in Hong Kong, he lives in New Zealand, the only thing American about megaupload was the.com in the name. Yet the us feel this is enough to send in the armed police to drag him and his family out of their home and extradite him to the US. There is a kid in the UK facing the same problem, and he didn't even take a dime of US money!
I've only seen one windows phone in the wild that someone actually spent their own money on. All the rest have been provided by work. Our current corporate cell plan gives us a choice off one of the crappiest androids from HTC or a slightly better species winmobile. For me though I'm using my iphone4 I bought a year and a half ago. Oh, and that is still going to be supported by ios5
Here in NZ season on is only now being shown on sky.
I could buy the DVD, but then I'd have to spend a few hours ripping it for my plex server. Overall, I'd pay for a legit DRM free service.
Thank goodnes then for android.
If you want the choice, buy a tab with a more configurable OS, just don't whine when the punters find it confusing and too hard to use.
Nothing stoping Mozilla making a boot to gecko OS, or replacing the default browser in an android distro.
Arm is awesome but I'm hanging out for the x86 tablets as they get cheaper so I can run a full Linux platform.
Ok, so what browsers do you use on iOS?
Windows8 RT on ARM is equivalent to iOS. The iOS base is the Mach kernel, same as OS X, but the apps and services are not 100% identical between the intel/AMD and ARM OSs. Windows 8 for amd64 will still be able to run everything, but the tablets that can do this are far more expensive than the ARMs, mainly because of the battery, IO performance and SSDs required.
And the next thing is screen real eastate on multiple big monitors, a comfy seating position, proper keyboard and a great mouse, none of these available on a laptop.
For my code cutting, Mac mini server with SSD harddrive, 16Gb RAM, 2x24" displays. I've got VMs for windows and Linux I can fire up when needed. My windows VM is actually an image of the shitty dell pc they gave me to start with so i still get the office supplied corporate apps. I bought the Mac with my first overtime paycheck.
For mobility, iPad and a bluetooth keyboard. This is just for mail, corporate intranet access and taking notes
I was a myth fan, but then after setting one up I realized that I hardly ever watched broadcast tv anymore. I've now gone with a much simpler plex configuration.
On my Mac I have plex server and eye tv. Anything I want to record I do through eye, which then transcodes and exports automatically, plex indexes it, and my 1TB media store, and the plugins for Vimeo, YouTube and iTunes etc. then I use plex frontend on an old 2008 mini on the 50" plasma tv, my iPhone, my iPad and my wife's android. I'll look at picking up a 7" android tablet for the kids to use.
What myth really needed to keep up we're more frontend clients. Current plex server beta also supports DLNA, so as more profiles get developed, more screens will get supported. I've also got a PVR for one off recordings if I need it, but of course nothing recorded on it can be shared.
And the education stats quoted in the article, remember the "criminal" population is just a list of those who got caught. Maybe this just means those without higher education are simply more likely to get caught and prosecuted for their endevour. I'm sure if you included politicians in the mix it might lift the stats a little.
Just a couple of points, if the admin has to ask here what to do, there is something wrong.
Also, if your documentation of the system and password repository are not up to scratch, then one day handover will NOT BE ENOUGH, EVER.
Just as well I encrypt all my terrorist social net work postings.

Cool I can sell my mp3s, now what about.aac and mp4, or even my.ogg and.flac files?
Can I also confirm iTunes deleted their copy when they sold the file to me?
But if he did it on his own time, he should have removed all personal documents and code when he left. If it was done on the companies equipment, it's still going to be theirs, not his to do with as they wish.
If he wrote it on his own, and used it at work, under the GPL, then he might have a leg to stand on, but it will come down to the fineprint in his contract who owns code he wrote while employed full time by that company.
Take it as a learning lession: Make sure you get signed contracts for everything.
Also, it he still has the source written under the GPL, simply fork it and upload to source forge under a new project name. But then comes th ugly case of patents. If he used any proprietary technology, or systems similar to that of his employer, they may hold patents for that invention. Even if he wrote the code, tough.
Here in NZ, we have specifically dissallowed software patents in out patent law. The belief is that copywrite is sufficient to stop blatant ripping off of your work. We have no patent trolls in the NZ software industry.
And I believe their last DRM was broken even before the game hit the shelves, and the DRM did not stop the pirating at all, it just really annoyed their legitimate users, who in some cases turned to the pirate copies so they could just play the damn game they just bought and paid for.
Umm, "If you knew really advanced mathematics you'd know that NP means N times P. So NP does equal P when N=1. But not the rest of the time. Oh and it does when P=0. How much was that prize again?" is exactly waht I was thinking, and I was trying to work out WTF this was news?
My bet is this could be for DR data centers to isolate them from possible land based disasters, fire, flood, earthquake etc. Tsunami coming, power up and head for deep water. Flood, well, its a ship and it floats! Virus/zombie pandemic, improved quarantine and isolation.
I just want to know what they use for the data hookup - satellite links I would think would have far too much lag, and bee too slow for serving data, so unless these are just used to store backups and critical operations stuff, it is hard to see the advantages, especially as in the US at least you can still rent/buy old missile silos or fallout shelters to give you a nice stable environment for a server farm.
Now if lots of media companies got together and said we want to broadcast to the world (not just the US) have lots of everybodys shows online, maybe after they air on cable or broadcast, maybe have pilots and one off episodes to test the waters, allow user content to be submitted, including a deal with youtube and metacafe, and present the videos in a format with a cross platform media client.
Maybe imbed watermark ads (but not too intrusively - but at least that way even when the clips are ripped, the eyeballs are still on the ads) Oh, and have one search engine to cover them all, maybe even let me click on a link to buy the show on DVD for full quality with no ads- now that would be a youtube killer.
But the media companies will want to control when and where you watch their shows, as they couldn't let some place like New Zealand get Heroes faster than their own tv broacasters syndicate the show for example. They will want to cripple it with DRM, even though pervasive and easy acess from this site would make it not worth the effort of getting a bootlegged pirate copy on a torrent, and anyone who can recieve the original broadcast can copy the show anyway.
Personally I thnk Notes is a great back end system, but it's client should never have been let near any users. It is terrible, slow, hard to manage and just plain ugly. Howeever is is really easy to develop some good business systems and have clustering, replication, secured access, web front ends, cross platform etc.
However MS Exchange and Outlook, there is a neat client that is fundamentally easy to use, but the back-end is very poor, hard to troubleshoot. Exchange 2007 is the first version that is even going to have some form of high-availability for its databases included right out of the box, but you are going to have to upgrade just about your entire exchange network (and every server running it to 64 bit Windows to make use of the features.)
I find the biggest advantage to using OSS publishing tools is with the non profit orgs I volunteer for. Using Scribus, OO.o, Gimp I can run all of these tools on any platform under any os using any GUI. They all work fine, the output is suitable for 99% of all the clubs I work with, the file formats are portable across systems, and the software is free (which is a big bonus for small non profits who want to do it all legally wihout using either corporate resources where they work or pirated software). Using them I can create professional looking output, and all the source material, graphics, text, fonts etc can be easily given to someone else to continue working on without having to reinvent all the templates again for the propriety apps they happen to have on their home PC's.
Web tools are more advanced but show the same principals.
Check out my site - http://www.mr2.org.nz/ - Static HTML coded using NVu, forum running bhbBB2, databases are MySQL etc. Webserver is Linux and Apache. All free and open source. Would have been unbelieveably expensive to do the same things legally using.Net and Windows/IIS.

Avatar might have had a shot if it had an original plot rather than copying Pochohontas and dances with wolves.
Actually, I think the technology he is looking fore here is called a pamphlet, or maybe a DVD player hooked to a tv on a loop.
Cool I can sell my mp3s, now what about .aac and mp4, or even my .ogg and .flac files?

Better be careful or you might find you are charged with recieving stolen goods if you download that song.
