Ok, lets see here. I can go buy a solderless modchip for my XBox and install it in a matter of about 20 minutes. I can go and rent a game or borrow one from a friend and shazam, its on my xbox. Hook it up via your network router or directly to your computer, copy off the files and burn a new DVD. Easy as that.

As for PC games, you can go to your favorite BitTorrent site and find a torrent file, hoping its free of virus' and actually works. Spend a day or two downloading the torrent because there are only 4 100% seeds and they are uploading at only 8k a second. Burn the ISO, find out its not even the game you were wanting to pirate. Go back to your torrent site, and find a new torrent. Same thing, happens...back to the torrent site. Ok, finally got the game I wanted, but oh crap, now I have like a billion virus'/malware/spyware attacking me from all directions.

PC games are not easier to pirate, console games are. People are going to consoles because of that reason.

PS...World of Warcraft is killing the gaming industry, not consoles!

Besides, I need money to get my Nissan 350Z when I plan on having my mid-life crisis. Its a shame though that those silicon valley workers dont' stay in the bay area. Instead, they move into the Central California Valley, dramatically increase the price of housing and the cost of living and those of us who live and work in the Central California Valley have to deal with the outrageous prices of everything. Best yet, most of the commuters live in the bay area during the week and only come out to the central valley on weekends. I think those living and working in the central valley need to kick the commuters out and tell them to never come back!

  10. Re:Not going to work on Warner to Sell Music on DVD · · Score: 1
I think an improvement to CDs would be something along the line of flash media. An entire album on an SD card or some kind of USB device that plugs into your stereo. The size would be convienent too, but also a little easy to lose.

    As for:

"Most people don't have a stereo system in their car good enough to even care about the audio quality of DVD Audio " "the DVD already has a low quality rip of the music, but who wants that."

DVD Audio is nice..real nice. My wife owns a few concerts on DVD and the audio is just outstanding. But put that same DVD into a car and it won't sound as good. Most factory speakers aren't high enough quality to enjoy the audio you would get from a DVD Audio disk. It would sound like CD quality if anything. So why upgrade for the use in a car. As for the low quality rip of the music already on the DVD, the article mentioned that there would already be digital files on the DVD since it is "protected" from being ripped at full quality. I would bet its FM quality if not less and the difference between a 160kbps MP3 and a 64kbps MP3 is quite noticable.

  11. Not going to work on Warner to Sell Music on DVD · · Score: 5, Insightful
This will fail. Its inevitable. The difference between a cassette tape and a CD was enormous. This isn't. Most people don't have a stereo system in their car good enough to even care about the audio quality of DVD Audio or even the surround sound capabilities. Nor would people go out and pay for a new stereo for their car. I looked into it once and DVD Player stereos are expensive, many exceeding $400 easily. The ability to use an MP3 player is also key. True, the DVD already has a low quality rip of the music, but who wants that. If they bought a new 60gig ipod so they can have high quality sound, they won't settle for low quality.

If this were to succeed and CDs were replaced with DVDs, online purchase of music for download would skyrocket because at least those songs can be put on their MP3 player.

They go the crap scared outta them and learned their lesson. I say good. Perhaps if in America the cops were to scare a few of these young holligans they may think twice of commiting a crime when they are older. Today, parents think their kids can do no wrong. Their little Billy or Jane are perfect angels, at least they are when their parents are around. The kids see their parents get mad and sue the police department because of what they did and what lesson do the kids learn; they learn that its ok to break the law because your mommy and daddy will protect them.

These cops did go a bit over the line, but not as much as is described in the article.

Hmm, a women's lib network saying that the gender gap is virtually closed. Wonder what would happen if Spike TV were to interview just men and ask the same question. Of course all the pro woman's lib women would say its virtually gone. If they didn't, it would be like saying they failed, and we all know how women hate being wrong.

Women were found on average to own 6.6 technology devices while men own 6.9, and four out of every five women felt comfortable using technology with 46 percent doing their own computer trouble-shooting."

My router is an AT&T brand as is my wifi card. That works great when the drivers work under windows. However, under Ubuntu, I had to use the generic Atheros drivers. It worked, but was unable to communicate correctly with my router with WEP enabled. If you have ever used a network with a mix of manufacturer hardware, you may find that some brands don't work with eachother for certain models. Netgear and Linksys are two good examples. My router probably uses a different algorithm for its WEP key security while the generic drivers for my Atheros chipset wifi card wasn't recognizing that algorithm. I have seen this issue several times even under Windows environments. Fortunatly, I haven't seen WPA affected by this same issue.

Not a big issue even for me, a somewhat Linux n00b. However, as soon as you add something such as video drivers and it removes the wifi drivers, it was a pain to get them back. Had to find a long cable to reach my router and took me a while to find a working repository to manually install madwifi. But, I got it working.
