GPG is great. What this 'ask slashdot' is missing is more information: What are you really trying to do with your data? If this is just for backup then just tgz (or whatever your fs uses) your files; gpg them and ftp them off. While your offsite data provider doesn't provide for sftp, the data is already encrypted so just your ftp creds get sent in the clear. To reduce brute force attempts to steal your encrypted files, see if your provider can put a simple ip filter on the ftp server, only allowing access from your preapproved addresses.
The security of the vendor is what needs to be considered, secure data should only be given to trustworthy, secure entities. BEFORE contacting the vendor, they should be evaluated with industry standards such as SAS70-II. After that, data encryption is much more secure then transmission encryption, use PGP/GPG with public keys, if the vendor can't/won't but you still must deal with them use PGP self-decrypting-executables with a STRONG passphrase.
