You really think they are paying $14 for a memory stick? Or for that matter how much do you think a CD costs to produce? Granted that studio time and other production costs aren't cheap - but economies of scale would certainly indicate that:

    b) The more Flash Drives I buy the cheaper it is

Order 100,000 flash drives and I guarantee the cost is quite low.

On top of mass production and the use of software images. A big winfall for the manufacturers is the advertising they put on the computer. Ever stop to think that the MyWay Search bar is a moneywinner? I have seen mention in other posts about trial versions being put on for profit. Advertising is by far the larger cut of such profits and can easily account for $50-100 price cut on a unit. Why would an open box be more expensive? No advertising revenue. Maybe if Dell was able to get enough sponsers I could get a computer for free - and then wipe it and throw a distro of my choice on.

Some sites are beginning to wise up to the situation and including a "mail me my username" option. Writing all my usernames on paper is unrealistic and a single sign-on system, internet wide, is infeasible. Logon overload is certainly a realistic problem as registration becomes required on more and more services. Hopefully logon's will not become so prolific that I will need a username to Google search. Am I the only one who is finding this?
