Agent: Thank you for calling tech support, how can we help you? Customer: I just installed an update to IE and my internet is now broke. Agent: *sigh* You're only the 500th person in the last hour to call, there's not much we can do call M$ since their sad attempt at catching up with the times is too little too late and to boot it wasn't done as best as possible. I suggest you use FireFox instead! Customer: What's FireFox? Agent: You know how girlfriends are better than wives? Customer: Uh... sure. Agent: FireFox is your sexy girlfriend, while IE is your ugly wife. Customer: Thanks for the help!

  3. AMAZING IDEAS! on Microsoft Confirms Work Begun on Next Xbox · · Score: 0

Follow with me here. The 360 released before any other next-gen console right? So they had an early lead. If M$ releases their NEXT next-gen console in say a year or two, then they'll have an EVEN greater advantange and win the next console war by default since Sony and Nintendo won't have anything to fight against it. Brilliant.

  5. Excellent on Ubuntu Linux for Non-Geeks · · Score: 5, Insightful

The Ubuntu, and Linux community needs more pro-active members like the author of this book. God knows how many people have bought those "For dummies" books, but calling them non-geeks as opposed to dummies would make a user more willing to buy the book, and hopefully try Ubuntu. The more mainstream media attention that Ubuntu gets, the better it will become and we'll see more and more users adopting it. Good work.

  9. Quick answer no, long answer yes. on Can Linux Pick Up Users Abandoning Win98? · · Score: 0

It's a matter of grey. I'm all for the Linux movement and I try and advocate it as much as possible, especially to the casual user where Linux is perfect for them. The quick answer is no. While Linux has gained a lot of mainstream attention, it's not quite there yet and the majority of people that adopt Linux are those that are very concerned about security and those that are more savvy than the average user. For the average user to even KNOW what Linux is, is a huge gamble.

However, the long answer would be yes. A lot of people have that "guy" who knows "things" about "computers". With support ending for the 98, and with an outdated machine that can barely run 2K let alone XP, they will look for alternatives, and they will look towards their resident "nerd". Depending on the nerd (We all can't be Linux advocates) they will suggest Linux and have to give a list as long as my arm to them on the benefits. If they don't convince them to switch, then they will just buy a $400 Dell with XP and go from there.
