  1. Re:Not a replacement for Tivo on Apple TV to be a Centrally Controlled P2P Network? · · Score: 1

I think that is one of the future points for Apple TV though - to replace your cable TV so it will essentially become a DVR. You buy your TV Shows through iTunes, then you own the show and can fast forward, pause, or whatever just like on a DVR. I don't think Apple intends for people to subscribe to cable and buy an Apple TV at the same time.

  2. Re:Cedega is a step in the right direction on Cedega and Linux Games · · Score: 1

The game companies could care less to use cross platform tools if you are just going to use Cedega on Linux. They still sold a copy of the game to a different OS with less effort. Now they don't have to support you or the game, and when you get a problem in Cedega, it's just hours of fun trying to figure it out for us novices.

There really is no exscuse to not be using cross platform tools and a selling the rights to companies like Aspyr to get games on multiple platforms. And yes, I am looking directly at Atari and how they are trying to take away my beloved NWN2.

Sorry to hear about your ipod, I've had my nano since the end of last year with no problems. Also, if the microsoft rumor about downloading all iTunes songs is true, you might not have to waste cd after cd to get it into mp3 format.

When is someone going to kick these guys out of the development seat and get a real company to put this game out. Heck, if I had started work on it myself, I probably would have a decent game out by now.

Honestly, all I can see from DNF right now is a HL2 clone of their scripting and physics engine, but just add AO content galore.

  5. Re:Redhat? on IBM Germany Leaving Vista for Linux · · Score: 1

First off, I don't mean this in an offending way to the parent reply; it's probably just my ignorance more than anything else.

You know, as a relative new user to Linux I am noticing a trend. I choose Red Hat/Fedora since it's an established company with great support as my distro. Recently I visited my PLUG and other Linux meeting places and the moment this comes out of my mouth, I get SUSE and Unbuntu CDs/DVDs shoved into my arms. "You should be using XXXX distro instead! It's much more configurable and it's not Red Hat!" repeated multiple times by more than half of the serious Linux users there.

Why is it so bad to file for some copyrights? Why is it so bad to create a payment system through support? What's wrong with establishing some internal standards and incorporating them into the OS?

I know part of the Linux experience is configuring the OS to exactly how you like it. But I guess I just don't understand why you would take another entity's work and re label without as much as an after thought? I say this from the RHEL clone, and also before fedora when I would see cds selling as Pink Tie, or Orange Jacket, or whatever Red Hat over simplified synonym they used. If it's good enough for you to choose as your OS, why can't you support the people who work on it?

According to online news sources, they have been working on an online sector for many years now. It was axed from the PS2 and put forth to relase with the PS3. PS3 also has more developers lined up than the XBOX, all though as you pointed out, it's not yet on the market. Soon enough it will be here, and we can start to do real comparisions.

Duke is a novelty game. Maybe they thought waiting this long they could reuse the same jokes and make them seem funny again. Anyway, I'm to the point of just not caring anymore. I would rather play a new System Shock or Quake Wars FPS.

And damn them if they put it on a console and call it a FPS game. I could jump, spin 180 and headshot your analog stick controller punk ass before you could switch weapons.

  8. Add-ons = failure on HD-DVD Confirmed For Xbox 360 · · Score: 3, Insightful
I've been into consoles for over twenty years now and can not think of a single time where an add-on device has been successful. My guess is they will sell this as a movie only product since developers will significantly segregate themselves by supporting this.

But this is microsoft though, they may try to take a Halo game and put it on HD-DVD to try and push it since they can lose money left and right to force their way in.

ASU and my friend's colleges in the same area have been heavily Java for mainstream CSE classes for a number of years now. When I first entered the University back in the late 90's people were whispering something about how all the classes have just switched to Java.

They were right, I only had one class that specifically used C++ (in an MFC environment) and we were really only doing OpenGL programming in a predefined project. Other than that, it was all Java and some lisp/prolog for AI and language theory.

  11. From special effects to personal reviews... on Behind the Scenes of Narnia's Special Effects · · Score: 2, Informative

Funny how this thread turned from discussion of visual effects to everyone's personal take on the movie. This isn't necessarily a bad thing; it proves the movie has something more than usual to it.

Spoilers follow...I saw the movie Saturday morning and had mixed feelings about the effects. As some people have pointed out, I never really felt excited at the scenery or any of the landscape. There was a lamppost with lots of snow and some mountains with a huge ice castle that we only see two rooms of. Maybe you can't expect to do that much with ice, but overall it never gave a really powerful expression. The same with the spring settings, green grass and some rocks - yay.

Now the characters looked like they had some more love put into them. All though our fawn friend never has a close up shot from the waist down, the shots done from a distance farther back show great detail and overall great walking motion. The King Lion on the other hand was, well a lion that could speak. The detail of the fur and body motion was top notch, but that was what was expected. The choice of voice was also sub par, no offense to Mr. Neeson, but something deeper and more powerful would have breathed more life into Aslan. From an effects standpoint I would also liked to have Aslan's size increased to showcase more of his stature. The minotaurs were most excellent and almost had me thinking I was watching a live interpretation of WoW.

Now a quick review - How four youths managed to lead an army against an experienced evil queen is beyond me. Yes, there are kids in Harry Potter who defeat the ultimate evil Voldamort but the circumstances are always in their favor. E.g. Harry getting help to complete the tournament from the imposter Moody and surviving the final battle due to his wand being identical, etc. etc. The overall story of Narnia seemed good and grand, but the two girls are underused in the battle and the final confirmation is all too quick with no real struggle or push of emotions. Overall, it's an average movie that I apprieciated more as a book.
