There are a few major challenges that Skype faces and will likely relegate it to a popular but, not ubiquitous application.
1. Quality of service from Public Wi-Fi - There is no guarantee the access point won't be saturated or have sufficient bandwidth to support the number of users trying to use the acces point.
2. Carrier Grade WiFi infrastructure will be owned by those who will take a dim outlook on having their income eaten by free calls. Traffic will be "shaped" to make the quality less than existing wireless options.
3. Skype to Skype is free...Skype Out is not so you need to pay to access POTS lines.
4. Not everyone who is attracted to Skype will be willing to pay to access Land Lines.
5. As has been mentioned, Skype is a proprietary application, thus there will always be someone looking to build a better mouse trap and keep this segment of the market fragmented.
6. Voip is not new and most carriers route their calls through a VOIP infrastructure to reduce their costs. Consumers can get cheap calls now through
long distance calling plans and cards. In North America local calls are free and long distance can be had for about the same as Skype out.
7. PDA+Voip+Wifi can be done without Skype.
The stores and manufacturers are betting that you don't take the time to fill in the forms.
Over time, Best Buy will ask third-party vendors to get on board with Best Buy's electronic rebate system. However, the ability of Best Buy to process rebates from third-party vendors will vary by vendor, as the retailer works to establish the program with each manufacturer over time
Follow the money...These guys are betting on the fact that a good percentage of consumers don't go to the trouble of mailing in the information. For those who complain that their information is lost by the processing company, make a copy of the documents to prove it was all together when you sent it.
I've never had a problem with the mail-ins but I'm sure that time will come.
Been using Google News since the beginning and thee have been few changes that I noticed... so what are the new features that come out of a full version release?
Or...how about the moral flip-side...doctors who enroll marginally qualified patients into a study because they feel the experimental drug is the person's best chance for a cure/survival/a better quality of life?
What if it's a double blind study and the patient gets the placebo?
It could be that a new employee is typing in the weights and she keeps hitting '2' instead of '1' - then suddenly the patients started weighing more.
What about Docs who enroll marginally qualified patients into a study to collect the cash from the drug companies?
Call me a luddite, but losing the environment wherein you can buy a decent camera and expect your kids to use it after they grow up in favor of the fast-paced furor of modern electronics sort of depresses me.
In my experience, the cost of even a second hand SLR has surpassed the price of a mid-market digital. Not to mention that modern SLR's are too light and just don't feel the same.

Market research has little value if the sample size is not large enough.
So basically this guy is aggregating a bunch of people...pooling the data which has huge value then splitting the proceeds...great move if he can pull it off but just how many people are willing to hand over private info for a couple of bucks.
Last focus group I attended paid me $100.00 and lunch for an hour of my time and my opinion on politics of the day. I doubt the payout would be anywhere near that in this case.
While they are "doing good" protecting the children from pr0n they will be sifting through other searches in the wars on drugs, terror, freedom of choice/religion/speech.
One of the greatest risk's to security is the User...machine to machine interaction can be structured nice and tight. It is when you get people running unauthorized apps, introducting flash drives etc. into the mix that increase the security risk.
If Bell South expects to charge content providers a premium to run on their network they have no clue how this works.
There is no way they could administer the tolls without cutting the existing service level or building a seperate network.
Content owners have to stand up and say NO. If Bell wants to create a QOS premium offering then let them go and build it out but, don't expect people to pay more to access a service that already exists.
Looks like this has been dreamed up so that there is another legal tool to go after P2P because you are not talking about the right to copy material for personal use. Now you just won't be able to broadcast/publish/share any information that was generated by someone else.
Before you run out and buy your new Apple shares take a look at the P/E ratios.
Apple 54.87
Dell 23.71
The run up in the price at Apple while, commendable is predicated on the hype around iPod and the assumption that will translate into sales of desktop machines.
Tons of reasons to have concern.
While you're shutting down MySpace make sure you get every other means of communications those Pot Smokers use too...Cell Phones, msn...aol...yahoo...gaim...jabber...personal contact at school...ban them from the shopping mall...play ground...hell you could escort the kid everywhere he goes but I doubt this war on drugs mentality would make anyones life better.
I've read that when a company is done with a factory in China making their product, you will then see the factory "illegally" keep producing a product sometimes.
These factories are not illegally producing the product if they are under contract to the license holder. They are guilty illegal distribution. These grey market products have been around in the clothing area since the beginning of designer clothes. Now with ebay and internet stores, there is a distribution outlet for technology hard goods that did not exist 10 years ago.
I'm not sure why google are doing this, unless they're getting paid (in money or some other way) by the producers of the software.
Partnering to extend the functionality of Google lets both parties create value in a way that guards against M$.
Back in the days of the PET we tried a DoS on our School's plumbing System by running all the water and flushing all the toilets at the same time.
Alas, it was all for not. Good thing they did not call the cops.
What about Point Shot? They have systems on trains and buses.

For what it's worth, the Alexa ranking for Sex.com is 3,560.
If this is a benchmark, think of the value of any top ranked site like Business.com

Call me culturally insensitive but, why not simply translate speech to text?
Seems to me the EU is trying to reduce their reliance on U.S based technology. I wonder if they will start up their own Internet too.
You could now sue any Radio Station, Media outlet who snarf's stuff and puts it on their site without paying for it.

Story reminds me of trying to eat fries outside a fast food joint and fighting off the seagulls.
The whole concept being proposed is interesting but, sounds like it's just a Wikki that IBM is going to bill the PTO huge money to set up.
And make sure that spell check and grammar check are on.
After all book learnin is over rated.
