Look at the licencing fees that must be paid to M$ for every product you use which is generally sent out of your community to retail and M$ head offices.
With linux,OpenOffice,Gimp and other FOSS the money otherwise sent out of town is kept in your community and can be spent on things that build local companies.

The fact that some users may Download multiple times while others will re-use the same copy over and over or bundle it on a CD for distribution.
That said, there is nothing wrong with letting people know that Firefox is a viable alternative to IE, and using the download number is the only tool at hand to guage the size of the user community.

Once all the other mainstream venues open up then there will no longer be a need for a private soap box with limited audience.
We just heard M$ tell us that Cell phones were too expensive and that they were going to save us with WiFi+Voip.
Now we have a service that will cost a fortune in many markets.
Which is it?...too expensive or attractively priced?
Does this mean that M$ will provide guaranteed connections through out their coverage area? (smirk)
What the carriers offer is a reliable connection and that is something that Voip+WiFi can't. Building out network coverage for this type of system will present reliability and coverage problems that are overcome by expensive carrier class equipment.
When ever you're in need of a streaming solution look and see what the Pr0n industry is up to.
Awhile back Wired ran an article on an adult site who claim to offer P2P streaming Pr0n...great way to save on bandwidth if it works.
There are still some carriers that don't let you outside their "Walled Garden" so this just limits the potential market further and increases barriers to adoption.
