That's just semantics...and a gross oversimplification...you have to differentiate between inanimate "objects" (hardware stores, houses, shingles, RACKS, etc) and people - inanimate "objects" lack the dimensions that human "objects" have: thoughts, feelings, hope, aspirations, love, hate, etc.
Reducing someone to an object means just that - you might as well be treating them like rock.
Games pander to and are created by men who "tend to" objectify women - duh! It's a boyz club and the girls want in. I don't know about you, but I would like to see more women interested in playing games - cause your sure as shit not going to get them to watch football with you!
You can rationalize it all you want, but I think this is the real issue - 'objectification' or depersonification is also used to describe the way we treat other people as objects, in particular the way men can treat women as sex 'objects'. By reducing other people to things, it permits us to treat them with less care and human concern, bypassing our values around this subject.
Space Station you say!! I don't think I can afford the price tag for the entire space station - but maybe they will let me sleep in the engine room where they store supplies of astronaut ice cream and fuel crystals - I could sleep on the boxes as long as I have my own bathroom.
I think it's more comparable to movies like "Goodfellas" or "Scarface" - they are great movies and they ARE NOT FOR CHILDREN. The Game industry needs to educate the public on the diversity of games so parents understand what they are buying and adults can play games made for adults.
The perception that - people who play online games or visit chatrooms are unattractive 'internet dork guys & mediocre internet chicks' soooooo 1993. Do your homework - market research shows everyone is online now - it's reached mass market penetration. If you look at it from a numbers perspective they couldn't all possibly be losers. And if people are spending time on-line it just makes sense that some of them might hook up.
The Internet is just another form of Entertainment - people might choose to hang out on-line rather than going out one night - it's just another friendly diversion - not a lifestyle choice for losers and it's cheaper than a going out to a club or movie.

I wish more parents would restrict their kids from playing on-line games - in addition, I wish the industry would sort them out as well - I see SecondLife created a teen area - everyone should follow suit. I would no more let a kid walk down a city street alone than I would let them play an online game or chatroom unsupervised - though the content may be rated M - people can say whatever sick x-rated crap they please - you can't stop that from happening...and you can't take it back. The Internet is rated X
//end rant
It wasn't you I was questioning really - just the whole fear of men thinking women they meet on-line are really men - it seems a little extreme - so I wonder if it's more perception than reality.
Also - you never see women complaining about women pretending to be men...so it seems pretty one-sided. Are there really that many repressed homosexuals waiting to lure straight men into their grasps? I doubt it - not with so many gay chat sites available....
Anyway, I would conjecture to say that there are as many women pretending to men so they can participate in forumns like this without being asked for a picture or some other such nonsense. For example - you don't know my gender - and it doesn't matter. But for the record - I am one hot babe:)
Did I say hot? I meant "not"
Really? Happened to a friend?
What I want to know is how many guys have really hit ona girl on-line and it turned out to be a dude- sounds like mass hysteria / paranoia / urban legend to me....
What do people expect from an industry that was FOUNDED by young white male programmers willing to work out of their garages for days on end without seeing the sun living on Velveeta cheese - that IMPRINT will take a long time to change.
Anyways, women tend to be more social than men, so programming is not a natural choice for someone who wants to interact with people on a daily basis.
Yeah...you're probably right...we should take the high road...but that's no FUN!:)
Off topic - I was playing GTA with my 6 year old nephew and I asked him why he wasn't shooting at the cops who were shooting at him for stealing a car. He said "I no kill good guys" - apparently my brother makes him play it responsibly - he can only shoot at thugs. He's not interested in that anyway - he just like to drive the cars...
If I hear one more person say "REAL GAMER" I will vomit in their general direction.
You are MISSING THE POINT - game graphics are in their Renaissance - attaining realism is about to open the door to great new possibilities... crack open an art history book and you will see the guy makes some excellent points.
Perhaps they are tackling it from the wrong direction - maybe they should lobby to make it illegal for children under 17 to be on the Internet without parental supervision - put the burden on the parents!
Yeah...that'll happen....
I heard Pixar was going to do a 2D movie to show it's not about the technology - it's about the story. I think this mode of thinking applies to games as well - graphics should be tailored to the gameplay - form follows function.
you said it!...soooo... what do they do for bathroom breaks?? hmmmm....
Those guys got more stamina than most people - I mean, I almost died when I rented the first season of "24" -- at some point I got so hooked I decided to watch the whole thing in "real time". Well, okay I didn't ALMOST die, but my ass did go numb at one point...thank god for takeout
Your looking at HIS handwriting? I would hate to be judged on that - I havn't written anything by hand since the 8th grade.... I'm pretty sure he painted a few nice pictures too:)

Yeah - or maybe you could play in a mall or school in the "ABC Kids" Universe - like "That's so Raven" or "Lizzie McGuire"
Smells like a marketing department making sequal plans to me....
Perhaps this is a good way for them to reuse assets and amortize their losses over the dismal sales of TRON the game....

Sweet - can I buy his beemr at auction?!

This is a good resource as well - removed from games by a few degrees yet still in the entertainment biz: http://www.thehollywoodreporter.com/thr/video_game s/index.jsp

maaaaybeeee they want us to rip it apart! It is pretty ridiculous
I guees on-line distribution will benefit from this - where there is no store clerk to check I.D. -

too invasive - how 'bout "depends" - maybe gamers just need johns built in to the couch - and a fridge...

someone sounds a little **frustrated** :) BTW - the head of production is a woman....
What if this catches on in Korea - can you imagine the headlines????
