Hmm.. If I already owned a store bought copy of a movie, I wouldnt have any qualms with buying the exact same movie in a different format, albeit pirated.
I always thought it would be cool to have a pistol in one hand and throw grenades with the other. How many times have I died in multiplayer when it would have been handy to shoot someone while holding a grenade.
I've checked out and registered for rent-a-coder.. From what I have seen, most projects fall into two catagories. 1. EE or CS students that have no business being in their major looking for somebody to do their homework. 2. Small businesses looking to spend $100 on a job that would normally cost in the tens of thousands.
Personally for my consulting (I design embedded systems with PICs), I won't design something for less than around $4000(and at that price, even I'm cheap labor). I deliver high quality, working designs, and I'm not willing to put in 40+ hours for 50 bucks..
It looks as though most of the people getting work on rent-a-coder are in eastern europe. Which is fine, though I wonder how often the "employer" gets his money's worth (not that American or whoever coders are necessarily higher quality.. damn, i hate feeling like i have to qualify everything i say).
So, I guess I am curious who out there has positive experiences and how experienced renta-a-coders evaluate their time spent versus money made.
I do some consulting using the Microchip Pics (pic16f870 mostly for the moment). In school we used the motorola 68hc12.
Since you are an EE student, you might look into checking out a development board from your department. That should give you something to play with for free.
Failing that, I'd recomment getting a breadboard, a few sample Pics (free samples, w00t) or whatever microcontroller you want, instead of a development board. Depending on what kind of controller, you may need an external oscilator or that sort of thing, but overall the setup should be pretty cheap.
I cannot attest to the quality of open software tools, but for my consulting, i use a combination of Sourceboost and MPLAB to program pics. There is a linux version of the Sourceboost IDE for around $70.
As they reused footage from Star Trek III and VI. I'm not kidding. Watch how the Bird of prey cloaks, then watch Search for Spock. Then observe how the Bird of Prey explodes.. Strikingly similar to how the ship explodes at the end of Undiscovered Country. Cheap, eh?
You know those CDs with soothing sounds like ocean waves crashing or a thunderstorm that some people use as sleeping aides? Well, a buddy of mine I play soccer with had a fantastic idea along the same vein. Hell, I should patent it instead of sharing on Slashdot, but here goes. Our cd would have 74 minutes of silence. What better way to fall asleep than to listen to silence?? Sure $19.95 may seem like a hefty price, but our subliminal silence CD will give you hours of quality sleep!
Today, April 1st, I am building a nuclear device in my back yard, and I need some advice. First off, how do I separate Uranium-235 in sufficient quantities? Secondly, I don't have a lead suit to work in... Is it ok if i wrap myself in aluminum foil?
My third question was going to be where to find an open source guidance system for my delivery device- thank you Sourceforge and Mr. Anonymous!
Speaking as someone who at one time wanted to go to Rice AND has friends at Rice, it is part of Rice culture is deluding themselves into thinking they are Ivy league. Go figure. Don't take it so seriously;)
As for me, I ended up at a higher ranking engineering school (electrical engineering @ UT Austin).
I think just about everyone at UT feels your pain now that the Coop has a monopoly on textbook sales.
A few things i did to save money/recoup losses: 1. borrow textbooks from the library whenever possible. If the library does not have the book, request that they buy it. 2. use an older edition of the book. and copy by hand/photocopy/scan/take a digital picture of the new problem sets in newer editions. As an electrical engineering major, i could print out like 800-1000 per semester pages at the Engineering Science building without additional charges- I used that quota for this purpose on occasion. 3. sell older books that the coop will not take back on amazon. i managed to sell the worst ever electrical engineering textbook on amazon. i was happy to get any money for that piece of shit. 4. ask your prof if you actually need to buy a book. sometimes the book is on the syllabus, but it is not used much. better just to borrow it for a short time when you need it. 5. there is a TEXbooks service, if you don't know about it- it's a bulletin board website with postings to buy/sell books. do a search on UT's website for it
Somebody needs to start a riot and burn down the Coop. Seriously, despite their "contributions" to campus, they are getting fat. It would be totally awesome if there was a campus wide boycott of the Coop, but that would be extremely difficult to pull off.
I remembered his story incorrectly: I thought he was captured in the process of armed conflict against US troops.
John Walker on the other hand, is a different story. While he may not fall under the guidelines for treason, and thus execution, he should be given no quarter.
At any rate, here is a famous case of treason: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Rosenberg
I've just been doing some research, and it seems (I could be wrong) as though the Korean War was not declared. President Truman seems to have set the precedent for unilateral action by a commander in chief. Yet the Rosenbergs were executed for being Communist spies.
I've seen portable players that play cd/mp3/vcd. It is in the form factor of a regular portable cd player, but it has a video out. They might be more popular in asia, as i saw lots of them when i was in taiwan.
+5 Smart ass is more like it :)
Wacky moderation abound in this thread.

It's my understanding that modern CCD cameras have IR filters anyways.. When you use NightShot on Sony handicams, it actually disables the IR filter.
Was the 0.8 asian girl really, really short?
Grab yer torches and pitchforks!
Tier Two: ???
Tier Three: Profit!!!
Joking aside, I hope the design scales well.

I applaud you, sir.
I've been having too much sex lately, so can anyone recommend a good upgrade for my Geforce 2? I need to spend some quality time alone gaming :D

This is one birth that should have been aborted.
YOu'd think that the tooth fairy would have died during labor......Hmmm, really wish I hadn't gone there.
It isn't hard to get a real girlfriend. Just go up to them and talk. You'll fail a few times before you score. That's life.
I just checked out that website.. Hiring a "girlfriend" is like paying a girl for a lapdance and not seeing titties..
There are plenty of girls out there who want a boyfriend too.

Is it so bad to be altruistic, even if making contributions is a side effect?
That said, I think there is some truth in what you suggest.

Thanks for the tears of joy, Herr Colonel :)

'Cause he cannot die anyway! Regenerator G8, baby!! I'd love to freebase some of that stuff! :)
