So true... Same goes for saving electricity. If I leave a lamp turned on in winter for a few moments in an empty room I'll get an eco bitch screaming about wasting power. Yet, they seem to have no problem when they leave their computer on for a long time when it is not being used (sleep mode? Or maybe at least turn off the monitor?), and don't even mention to turn off the power connection when it is turned off.
Have you ever watched the two Simpsons episodes starring Stephen Hawking (They Saved Lisa's Brain and Don't Fear the Roofer)? If you didn't, then watch and you'll see that even him has no problem in joking about his own condition.
This is how it looks in full-mode, with media library open. It is bit slow to open in my computer (PIII 1GHz), but that is also because of the large amount of music files in the DB. Anyway, I only use it when I specifically want to and that's not often. Again, I can't say much against it.
When I open a video, it looks the same way as when I open a music file, except it also shows... the video. All in the same window and the same I said before.
Actually, for those concerned with privacy, Real Player gives easy access to privacy control options. Just check the options screen.
There is also something called message center. I'm not sure what it is, because I turned it off right after install, but I guess those ads and pop-ups you talk about come through here. However, it is kids play to deactivate it. Just click on the option to do so.
I understand all the rage against Real, I shared it too when using the old players, but today it is way better. Not perfect, but much better. Ok, it might not come optimized for privacy, but with little effort you can do it. Really little effort, considering that, as it plays most media formats, you only have to configure one player. This is specially good with quicktime formats, because it also gives the benefit of full-screen video.
I use RealPlayer as Windows Media Player replacement since around 2 years ago and what I can tell is that your description of RP seems to be about a totally different software. Worse than a virus?! What about some facts that support what you are saying?
RealNetworks did a lot of shit in the past, true, but that doesn't mean they will always keep doing it. That's the same as saying that someone who was convicted by a crime will always behave as a criminal.
It really bothers me that most people who bash Real latest software do so without even trying the thing.
Apparently you can't take a picture of the Eiffel Tower at night without violating somebody's copyright there. (I think it's the lighting.)
You can take the picture, but you can't publish it commercially without a property release, unless it's for editorial use (like a newspaper). That's because the light show is a copyrighted work. Usually, and if they agree, you can get the release by paying a fee to the copyright holders. Here's a list of more places with similar restrictions.
If someone claims to have seen a flying donkey, it is not up to you to decide the validity of their experience. What irks me is people immediately dismissing such a person as a nutjob.
There is a similar product being developed in Portugal, but it doesn't require head movement. It works by reading the eye movements, so it can calculate the position you are looking in the screen. To click, you just need to blink an eye. The target users are people with extreme incapacity, like paralysis, but I guess something like this could be marketed for common users. The main problem is it's price, currently 1750 + 5% taxes. There is also a cheaper version, but requires head movement.
Unfortunately, this project is, mostly, a one man show and I know he isn't thinking of going international, yet. Anyone interested always try contacting him, maybe he can work out something. At least it shows interest from outside and might speed up internationalization.
The webpage is only in portuguese, so I'm linking through babel fish:
Just proves his head was full of air and that he had a single neuron, precisely located on it's center. When he cut one of his ear, he created a stream of air, coming from the interior of his head (high pressure) to the outside (low pressure). The single neuron, placed in the middle of the stream, obviously caused some turbulence, explaining why he "painted turbulence".
Agree, Re-volt brings me great memories. People in my college got really addicted to the game and most of the times you could find someone playing it in the lan.
"The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".
In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.
By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

My county, Portugal, has agreements with some african countries to give some benefits to african students willing to come here for university studies.
I know about a few of those students who chose to graduate in computer science, even though none of them had ever seen a computer. Once they got in front of one, they were shocked to see a computer mouse working. They couldn't believe how that little arrow on the screen could move when they touched the mouse.
Why are you people so pessimist? They have no need for such invasive measures... I think they're just going to use something similar to an anal probe, for which everyone already have a proper receiver. Actually, it seems like a pretty good idea, just think about it. It's universal, not limited to humans - maybe soon we can see fish using touch screens. Wicked, eh? Some may even get extra pleasure from using it, besides the joy of using a touch screen, that is - I'm pretty sure we can expect an increase in productivity in many offices. Only God knows what else can this thing bring in the future...
Ah, modern technology, you got to love it, right? Right?
You can hear that kind of noise here, just recorded for your listening pleasure.
I called my own cell phone from another cell phone. My cell was right next to the speakers and the other one was about 1.5 meters away. The "bzzpt" starts before the call arrives and it is only displayed in the phone when it starts ringing.
It's also common to use a kite.

Ok, I see I was really missing something :-).
I'm very thankful for your answers, I learned a lot and cleared out some obscure doubts on the matter. THANKS!
Well, unless I'm missing something here, if it delivers 100 times more power than an ordinary battery then it also increases it's life:
P = V*I
100P = V*I
I = 100 (P/V)
For example, most powerfull easy to find rechargeable AA batteries can deliver 2.5A, or 3W, at 1.2V.
P1 = 1.2 * 2.5
P1 = 3W
This battery can power a 3W, or 2.5A, device for an hour.
With an increase of 100 times more power we have:
P2 = 100 * P1
P2 = 100 * 3
P2 = 300W
The new battery could power the 3W device for 100 hours, instead of the 1 hour that the current battery can do, or a 300W device for a single hour.

No, I'm not using Real Alternative, it's the real thing.
This is how it looks when I open a music file. See? Pretty simple, opens really fast, doesn't get in the way, good eye-candy, no ads.
This is how it looks in full-mode, with media library open. It is bit slow to open in my computer (PIII 1GHz), but that is also because of the large amount of music files in the DB. Anyway, I only use it when I specifically want to and that's not often. Again, I can't say much against it.

(sigh) Don't they ever learn? From this page:
No need to go to the 20s.

True, this is something well suited for digg, not slashdot. This and the short summaries that have been popping out lately.
Cool, though.

After all, it was one of the first calculating devices.
Obviously, you read the wrong manual... Check item 0809229005. Quality work, written by a top investigator!

Wait... the Finland government pays 400e per month to students?!
