  1. Re:What a Novel Concept! on Wiretap Ruling Threatens Telecoms · · Score: 4, Insightful

I drive a "sports" car that gets 30+ mpg (I've gotten upwards of 40mpg by babying it on the highway, measured by distance/gallons used).

I used to drive a truck that, when babied, got a whole 18 mpg. City driving made it plummet quickly into the 12mgp range. Most sports cars (unless it's got a V10-V12) get better fuel economy than this. In fact, some of the innovations in sports cars (the Audi R10 for one) increase fuel economy.

On the note of fuel economy, and the like, what is the point of 10% ethanol gas. My car runs worse, gets less mpg (around 10% less mpg). Is it just an excuse to dilute the fuel, and charge the same for it? I know it reduces emissions, but when I have to use more to go the same distance, it seems like it isn't doing anything helpful. Much like the "hybrid" cars, that cost you more than they'll ever save you in fuel (fuel savings for 3 years is usually around $3000, the replacement battery in 3 years is around $3500-$4000), and the technology to make the batteries is also harmful to the environment.

Well abused tool belt with used tools (the one day my tools and tool belt were new and shiny, I had security ask for credentials 4 times, and have never been asked since).
Well abused hard hat with a contractors name on it (Simplex/Grinell works well, since 99.9% of everyone have a Simplex/Notifier fire alarm system in Houston).
Work worn blue jeans and t-shirt. Cover-alls also work.
    Worn work boots.

What really scares me though, is that I had less resistance walking around Halliburton than I had walking around BMC Computers. Apparently, software code is behind better locks than radioactive material. I used to be a fire alarm tech, and went into the wrong building once, had security open the fire command center, and opened the panel before I realised that I was a block away from my intended destination. I put the panel back on, walked out, thanked security, and made haste to my original destination. This was very soon after 9/11, and security was stopping everyone with a suit and tie, but toolbelts got to walk past the metal detectors.

There is a hack with the MINI ipod adapter that I found out quite accidentally.

If you have a Video iPod, then add one video to a playlist, go to that playlist, click on an audio track prior to the video, hit play, connect the iPod to the car, and listen to the audio track, let the video que up, then click >>| to go to the next track. Now hit 1 (make a MINI1 playlist) and your iPod will now function like an iPod, and still be able to use steering wheel controls.

If you dont do it exactly that way, you will lock up your ipod, and have to Center + Menu to reset it.

The problem with point to point microwave wireless is that its unreliable at best, not in service at worst. There are problems with packet loss and latency. Our office currently is paying $300 for 2mbit service, and I'm working to remedy that. The biggest problem is convincing the president that we need to spend another $400 a month for T-1 (he's smarter than the PHB in all aspects other than why we need to spend more money, not less).

Currently I'm looking into business class cable (6mb / 2mb), T-1s, and SDSL. Even with the great leaps and bounds in technology, you'd think the cost of T-1 lines would be lower (or the bandwidth significantly higher).
