That was a few years ago, and last I knew the guy was still on the dot-bomb list of casualties. After mentioning it to my employer at the time (when things were looking good), they raised my salary slightly higher than his, and made him aware of how they had 'fixed the problem'. He never said another word to me for the remainder of the 3-4 months the company lived on venture capitol, heh..

So, I discussed the situation with my employer, and they came half way, which is all I really needed to begin with.

Lots of things here are on shaky ground all times, so I can't really say one way or the other if its a good thing or a bad thing how it worked out, but it's nearly 6 months later, and I'm still working here, with things getting better every day from my point of view.

Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast) was a bust due to people cheating out of boredom who went mostly unpunished because the facilities to stop them were only implimented for Japaneese servers. When they did make it to the US servers, they were almost instantly defeated and still major steps behind the Japaneese counterparts.

Lots of people seem to think this was NOT how it was, but Sonic Team had NO INTENTION of making things easy on US players, all the way down to only accepting payment methods popular for Japan and not any other countries (No debit cards, for example), do I even need to mention the price for access in PSO v.2 was 2000¥ (up to $15 USD) for 3 months, sure, they sell the game in Europe and the United States, but the prices are only in Yen and not given an exact ammount for exchange rates. I think I was charged $14.63 and then $3 by my credit card company for doing the conversion. UGH.

So, new PSO players for other platforms, beware: Sonic Team has no idea how to write secure Client/Server enviroments.

Digital cable is actually poorer quality than normal cable, there is a loss (mostly in audio, ever notice how high your volume has to be with a digital convertor compared to analog?). Because of the poorer quality, and the fact its basically just a movie stream, it has to be decoded to be displayed.

AOL Time Warner is not charging me too much for service, anyway. I'm quite happy with their service in the specific market of Cable Television. I'm not so happy that they sell complete crap as Movies, Music, and Dialup internet access, but hey.. What else do I do, switch from one monopoly (cable television) to another (direct tv)? If whatever the copyright or patent covers is replicated and released in a NOT FOR PROFIT situation there should be nothing stopping the NOT FOR PROFIT individual or group from releasing or building products (with allowance for whatever fiscal cost incured in manufacturing or transport), this not only releases holds on free software, it says that if I don't like the quality that MegaCorp's products have reputation for, I can recreate them and sell them to others at cost to force MegaCorp to produce better quality equipment.

This stimulates the economy if MegaCorp competes with not for profit groups, and also prevents MegaBiggerCorp from replicating MegaCorp's patented product. In the case that it does NOT stimulate the economy because MegaCorp whines like a bleeding whale even though any not for profit attempt at making anything MegaCorp mass produced will incur greater costs, it will benefit the customer in the end regardless. No more crap product, more money in pocket to give to someone who doesn't make crap.

How does this apply to software?.. How did the TCP stack in Linux become GPL?.. Someone re-built it based on the specifications used in the original BSD stack or another stack built on that stack. It's not that hard, is it?

Toyota and Lexus, Honda and Acura, and Nissan and Infinity isin't too bad compared to "Ford Volvo Aston Martin Mazda Lincon Mercury Jaguar Land Rover" Incorporated of America. But, hey, I regard my Acura as a Honda product, and if you have ever seen the post-sale stuff that Honda sends you, so do they.

I will say that the RSX, though, has to be the quietest vehicle I've ever driven with exception to the Honda Civic HX with the Continiously Variable Transmission, it's quiet as hell. The RSX's motor has no low omnious growl, it sounds like a wind-up toy, but has ample power. If the sunroof and windows are closed, you don't even know you have an engine unless your over 3k rpm (which is hard to do in 5th gear, we're talking over 75 or 80mph). Something about having the power the RSX has + 30mpg on the freeway (I think Honda rates it at 33, epa says 30), is just killer. Too bad the Corvette beats the NSX in fuel efficency (by about 1mpg). i-VTEC is a nice technology.

    I'm a car geek. I blame my coworkers. :(

  15. Re:Like an American car... on Salon Goes Inside the X-Box · · Score: 1

Oh my, how deep in the land of OT we've gone, oh well..

See, when you pay $90k for a NSX, you're buying one of the few cars that keeps its value, and nearly increases as newer models come out that are more expensive. Why? Rarity. It's all about being rare in the US that makes the car valuable. The Corvette is *not* rare, it may be a better car in regards to preformance, but its underlying thought is not to be a comfortable sports car, it's to be a balls out sports car. NSX's are well balanced in terms of luxury, ride, power, etc. I've been inside a Corvette, it didn't make me go "oooh, ahhh" like the NSX does (as I was sitting in one while I was buying the RSX).

Honda's (and Acura's) in general have some of the highest residual values of any mass-produced car. There is a reason for that, and if you've ever really driven the shit out of any Honda/Acura product, you'd see why.

Next thing, the NSX is a sports car for people who have previously owned high-end Honda (Acura) vehicles and like the overall feel of them. It has alot of the same comforts, etc. Although it might not be the best bang for buck, it's definatley not junk for its price. If I was concerned with bang for buck, I'd of bought a Subaru Impreza WRX -- the problem is, it's 99% fast 1% sensible and 0% luxury/comfort. I just got the RSX, which is the "cheapest Acura", I have never been to any car dealer, including dealers for Cadillac/Mercedes, that has treated me with the respect I got from that dealer. From what I hear, the same is true elsewhere. Oh, and the overall quality of the car kicks ass too.

  16. Re:Like an American car... on Salon Goes Inside the X-Box · · Score: 1

If your going to compare anything to the NSX you need to hit things in its price class. E.g. the new GT-40, the Viper, so on and so forth. The Viper is cheaper than both, actually. I'm an Honda (Acura) fan, and while I'd drive a NSX, it would be purely because of the rarity of the vehicle, and its 0-60 in 5.0 seconds, not because of top speed or cornering. Right now I drive a RSX, and I'm sure its FWD-ness kicks the shit out of the NSX on a really twisty road, because the cars are built for diffrent purposes. Anyhow, comparing the NSX to a Corvette is stupid, it's like comparing a Mercedes SL500 to a Ford Pinto.

Oh, this is entirely offtopic, but as the trolls say, it's only karma. :)
