Syft Technologies is the first company to offer a commercial instrument with the full discriminating analytical power of a laboratory-grade mass spectrometer.
Lets just hope there isn't a residence cascade;) Luckily I have my crowbar, do you?
I understand what you mean, the only problem being that there are more "politics" (aka bullshit) involved with the switch. We deal with a third party vendor here in town for our POS system development (this was done way before I started there) so there's a lot of problems with getting the number of hours to jive with the money we are putting out, etc etc. Currently I develop all other new applications going forward so that we can slowly ease their grip [off our balls]. To answer your questions, we use access shared on a main computer over a small 2-3 computer lan that all compuers access. This is a really bad system since a.) access is used for large amounts of data (all video game titles, player titles, all transactional histories, credit tracking, etc) b.) windows security across the network creates a lot of problems (dropping privledges, slow access times due to security processing, slow data access time period). Yes, they use PC's on the counters that run our proprietary POS systems that are run in vb6 to access the Access db's on the main computer. The POS handles manager reporting also through a crystal reports viewer that is built in. It's just a bad system with a lot of snags and needs to be changed after the 10+ years its been in service. Technology is better now and things have changed quite a bit since then.
Yeah, you're very right. We actually use Jetcomp as well and it works much better than the other tools we have available to us. Network problems do always seem to be the culprit as storms and such hit even with surge protection they still get knocked out sometimes. Cutting the power in the middle of using the database and its processes can damage it no matter what. Not to mention the store employees aren't exactly computer savvy. When anything bad happens they hit everything and anything available to them(any options in error messages as well as the turning off and hitting any buttons on any devices in the go between) and that screws things up quite a bit. With all that in mind we are migrating to the free version of MSSQL here in the coming months so I suspect most of that will become a thing of the past (Dear god I hope so).
The company I work for runs all of it's POS systems off of MS Access and it's given us nothing but problems. I would suggest switching to anything but Access. If you knew the number of corrupt databases and table property dropping we deal with over a months period (and that's only 72 stores worth, or 72 instances of Access) you'd think twice or think about switching immediately. We are constantly compacting and repairing the databases and it just generates a lot of extra work and takes up time that would better be spent fixing the POS code itself. Steer clear of Access if you want to keep large amounts of data (as it seems you do with that many mdb files and tables). People have argued with me over this, but Access just isn't meant for large scale enterprise applications. If you were a small business I could see it being appropriate but nothing above that.
as long as their chicken fingers, wings, and seasoned fries are still awesome. Oh, and the ice is still crushed and not cubed. No place is closer to heaven to me...
I don't know that moving to subscription based gaming is such a good idea. Many of the PC games out there today are, for lack of better words, shit. Games that are subscription based tend to make me shy away unless they have the appeal that games such as WoW have. I pay for WoW because it's only one game that I do actually play on a regular basis for. I also pay for WoW because it is a game that I can't feasibly "beat". It has longevity under it's belt. It costs Blizzard money to keep those servers up for the strenuous load they receive, not to mention all other costs associated, and being a app developer/sys admin I understand that. If other games I play started to charge a subscription fee, I would be forced to choose one or two games. That's not the position you want your consumer in. Back to the subject of crap games. I'm not sure about many of you but I personally don't mind waiting on a game if that means it will actually be good. For example, I was waiting for HL2 to come out for a verrry long time (/flame, I know) and it got pushed back many times but I feel it was completely worth it. The game was amazing and the games that were released along side it give me more replay ability than any other games ever have. I also feel this way currently about the release of Twilight Princess(although not PC, still the same concept). Sure it sucks it's taking so long to come out, but will the wait be worth it? I don't suspect Miyamoto will let us down. What I'm trying to say is perfect your games. Also quit making so many cannon fodder games that are crap. Consumers will buy the games that are worth buying.
If they want to prevent piracy as best as possible I don't understand why many games don't move to an activation method after each install. Sure there are ways around this as well, but I'm sure that system can be tweaked to effectively prevent such piracy. Many applications do this but I've noticed most games don't. To be honest, other than Valve, I can't name one other that does. Sure all of them require a CD key, but these days that means nothing.

I'm in the same boat with you. I'm a fairly new Linux user and I installed the Gentoo 64bit distro about a month ago and didn't realize I would be completely alienated. I used it quite a bit for things like pandora.com. So now I dual boot unless I feel like dealing with the 32bit version of firefox.
I like how they threw in witches and devil worshippers. They could have just as easily said drug cartels or mobs but chose two peaceful subcultures. Sure every bunch has their bad apples but over all you never hear of witches or devil worshippers killing a little kid for his iPod. I was raised by a very open minded family and my father was sometimes accused of being a "devil worshipper" by many of my religious peers families due to his belief in some of the satanic churches ideals. He never practiced Satanism, he merely believed in a few of their principals. He was never a violent person and on that note this article hit a sore spot for me. The satanic church itself is not about violence at all, it is more about embracing lifes pleasures. Ok, I'm getting off topic. Violent gangs are bad and don't incriminate other subcultures in the process if you don't know what you're talking about.

Could this mean a Mr. Mosquito 2? Oh god I hope not...
Being from Florida I detest mosquitos due to many of the rivers, creeks, and swamps. You can keep them Greece, we don't want em.
Not only that but the site seems to be coded like complete ass. I see at least 5+ errors on any given day and that's just from checking the few messages I may get, a couple profiles, and looking at a bulletin or two. By no means a sustained viewing period. Maybe I'm the ass but I defiantely notice it regularly.
Wait wait wait... terrorism? I think by terrorism they meant fearmongering. I'm sure the terrorists are worried about the number of friend requests and comments they get on their profiles.
I have been able to experience both sides of this dilemma within the last two years. At a certain point in those two years, our company was bought out by Blockbuster and from that time on the BS grew exponentially. Before that we were a 50 person headquarters and it was one of the most enjoyable jobs I'm sure I will ever have. I work as a programmer and have had my share of corporate BS since then but by no means have I seen as much as most of you being as I am only 21. All I do know is that people come and go faster now, some people just can't handle it and why should they? I don't think anyone should fear for their jobs unless they are doing something wrong and that's exactly how the company doesn't work now. The amount of overhead that came with them taking over is ridiculous. Where things used to get done immediately, some simple tasks take days, weeks, or even months to finish. The corporate machine has definitely made an impact on my job.
In other news, XTube.com's user base grows exponentially after a slashdotting.
Hey if the cops show up, don't be alarmed. Fido accidentally jumped on the keyboard.
Doesn't matter, he's still a blubbering vagina.

As much as I hate the caps lock key, I find it an easy way to filter out the definite idiots from the possible ones.

Maybe they'll get struck by lightning... and then they'll dance just like Bono and wear horrible sunglasses. Or die. Pick your poison.
I think you mean a thermal detonator. "Uta Guta Solo?"
I could have swore that said "the ratio of porn to electron mass."
Fine by me, I'll just build my own DVR. Simple enough.
