Once again PEBKAC and the Human Element proves to be the bane of the person trying to make computer data secure. I face this every day and to this day I still wonder how the hell my parents don't get more infections then they currently do. Wait that would be me making sure their antispyware and antivirus is up to date every time their backs are turned.
It does help that I drummed in safe surfing practices into their heads.
It's still going to get changes between now and when it hits the shelves/warehouses. Between now and then a load could happen. I'm going to take this story with a very large pinch of salt. Maybe Honshu sized would be enough.
Vista's a real big pain in the ass to me and hasn't impressed me. Some good ideas were badly implemented causing people to either disable the features or just get the dreaded "yes to everything" syndrome that I often see.
If Windows 7 comes with any DRM I'm getting a Mac and grabbing some Windows XP disks and to f*** with what MS have to say. Digital Rights Management? Digital Rights Mangling more like. I haven't forgiven Sony/BGM for the 2 very public rootkitting incidents and for once slapping a rootkit on my machine after playing one of their CDs on my machine. I want to know who came up with that crap so I can punish them with a cactus up where the sun doesn't shine.
The whole unable to get security updates because of imposed caps is something that worries me a great deal. I'm one of those people who checks for updates to Windows and my anti-crapware programs almost every day. I see this whole traffic caps thing as something that could really cripple the economy further then it already is. I do web design as well as a hobby come self taught thing and sort of rely on a good uncapped connection to help me stay sane after my junk is uploaded.
Caps already exist in the form of a "fair use" policy. What's "fair use"? Someone who relies on the internet to work from home or to do business will use far more then the bloke down the road who only logs on to check their emails once a day. Also the emigrating couple who wish to show the grandparents by streaming good quality (I.E. you can actually see the baby's face) video conference will use a lot of stream/bandwidth.
This article makes it sound like autism is a bad thing like the HIV virus. "A preventative cure" You cure diseases, you don't cure an alternative intelligence. I was diagnosed with Aspergers at a young age and have recently been confirmed by another expert. Sure I sometimes don't take subtle hints but how is that a disease? My inability to lie (that part of my brain doesn't work) is actually a benefit in so many ways. I'm upfront so people would be more comfortable in partaking in a business deal with me rather then with someone who can and does lie.
Oh wow maybe we should cure all that so I can lie, cheat and steal. My brain is perfectly fine as it is. It's people's attitudes to autism that are the problem. I'm fed up of people presuming I'm stupid and incapable because I have a form of autism. That is the disease, not the autism itself.
I bet if you look at these kids who do the shootings both parents are at work all the time and either aren't paying attention to their kid's misery or just don't care. My parents did this and never noticed how unhappy (and bored) I was at school. I'm still recovering from the effects of school and with a heavy desire to blow the place up with the bullying SOBs in it.
Cause and effect. Cause = unhappy at school because of others. Compound with parents who don't care. Effect = it comes back to them with extra teeth becuase they've just managed to make that person believe that Humanity sinks.
I agree with the service job abuse thing. Some people just won't listen to anything but a manager. I've had experience with those sort of people and I usually want to throw them through a window.
You need a licence to have car why not the same for a computer? It would stop us getting questions of "why isn't my monitor switched on?" when they didn't hit the power button on the thing.
Of course killing them with kindness works in the sort term but when you get the 50th call from the same person who can't speak a word on English you just want to hurt them if only to make sure that the lessons sink in.
Thankfully I have a bit more self control then to hurt my fellow man. But recently I have been suffering a lot as a result of in-sniping and have very nearly thrown things across the room (always wondered how a computer looks when it smashes against a partition wall).
Yes I do need psychiatric help and have been waiting 4 months for this from my Occ. Health without any success. With my situation the way it is the managers might get a free flying lesson if this isn't speeded up cause it isn't helping my frustration.
Jack Thompson is the exact reason why having babies should be regulated.
It's not the games which are the evil, it's the parents for not teaching little Johnny or Jenny any better. My parents taught me that violence was wrong. I've watched things that would make people mess themselves. I've watched porno stuff. I'm not affected by it because I was mature enough (even then) to know that it wasn't real and that it's not a good thing to re-enact.
I've had a load of crap from various bosses and you don't see me gunning them down, even though I usually leave a small momento for them to remember me by.
Parents should be parents. Without someone teaching us we will turn to the nearest resource for guidance.
Unless the journal contains slanderous comments people should leave well alone.
I have an LJ which work know about but only one idiot has persisted to snipe at it and me. I've not rectififed that problem. My personal life has no bearing on my professional life so work should know better and leave it the **** alone.
This is an infringement on my freedom of speech. I'm not even mentioning names or dropping any obvious hints.
I've played the third Monkey Island and Toonstruck and I must say that I like them and am interested in getting more titles. They're often going cheap in game stores or the classifieds of your papers.
I think there is a site dedicated to retro games such as this, but failing that Ebay might be a good place to check these gems out. Haven't checked for a while so I'm not sure.
I've played several MUDS, MMORPGs and other online games. I've never taken anything said online personally. The person needs to be able to detach the online world from the real world.
Not sure if bad parenting is playing a hand in this violence. But highly likely since I play/watch some violent things and don't go around killing people. I'm frickin autistic and if I can make the detachment then no other person has a decent excuse.
Personally I think part of the problem is the mass hysteria that the media cause. If person X plays Y game that involves shooting and then goes on a shooting spree, the media blame the game and not the parents who should have taught person X to know better.
I've watched all sorts of violent and pornographic scenes in films and you don't see me re-enacting any of that. My parents taught me better then that. I used to play Sonic the Hedgehog on Mega Drive (Genesis to you Americans) and Game Gear. Imagine if someone tried to steal jewels from a jeweller's. Bet ya the press would blame the game. "It encourages the free pickings of valuable gems" (reference to the Chaos Emeralds that you have to collect to get the good ending)
I use to work in Network Administration. My team leader is a very nice chap who I have a ton of respect for. When he's in he does check that everyone's ok. He does sometimes work from home becuase he can get more work done (he gets a ton of phone calls in the office so he can't do anything for more then 5 mins without another call).
I can approach him with any problem and he doesn't treat me like a freak for it. He's the only reason I've managed to keep my sanity.
The problem lies in the deputy. She's been quietly sniping me since it was found out that I was disabled earlier this year (I don't list my disability for that reason). I've moved to another department now because of it, but that team leader will remain in my memories as a good manager.
A good manager is in touch with their employees and tries to at least understand how you're feeling or what you're thinking.
The key to a successful work relationship is communication. As stated above the team leader sometimes works from home. We understand why he does this becuase he tells us why and that prevents anyone sniping him due to resentment. People fear what they don't understand and they hate what they fear.
No the jerk somehow brute cracked my non English word password (don't even think my password actually exists in any English directory), I have no keyloggers on my PC as I keep a close eye on it.
Once they got into my account, they then uploaded an MP and must have made a link for people to download the thing.
Don't jump to conclusions becuase you generally end up stuck in the tar like substance called a logic loop.
Eating habits are learnt from a very very young age. If you encourage your children to eat their vegetables, they will eat vegetables into their adult life. If you take them to a fast food place every day they will learn to eat pure crap.
The same applies to exercise but with a lesser extent. I loved walking and still do. There was no such thing as the school run. I caught the bus on my own in the morning and caught the bus back in the afternoon. Kids today are completely spoiled by this "if I don't take little Johnny to school someone might mug him" mentality. Kids need to learn to fend for themselves and look after themselves. My mother and school taught me to cook. Give me a recipe (not souffle leave that to Delia please) and I can follow it and make a tasty meal.
I'll tell you a true story. My mother went on the Atkins diet. She didn't lose a bit of weight and I ended up totally miserable becuase all of a sudden my fave foods (pasta, noodles, rice) were banned from the house. Also because of this diet I now shudder when my parents are cooking a fried breakfast (which is about a once monthly treat and not a daily occurance).
If you're going to feed your kids, make sure you're not setting them up for tooth decay, obesity and other stuff.
Also diabetes can and does run in the family. It's not always to do with lifestyle.
It's the old adage of you get what you pay for. These PCs are perfect for a first PC where the user might not be able to handle a high end PC's capabilities.
Not everyone is after a high end gaming machine. Some literally just want to use an office type program, surf the web, email, and play Solitaire.
It's the stupid salespeople selling these expensive computers just for the purpose of getting their profits up so they can win that incentive the big bosses put out. Not all salespeople are like that but there are that sort of salespeople out there.
Having gamed for 17 years (I'm 24) and with a dad who could make a sailor blush whenever he does DIY and a few uncles who make sailors blush by the simple action of breathing, I often get called a "he" and get people trying to virtual kick me in the nuts. OK so I guess it's cause I'm a bit of a tomboy at heart and use androgynous char names but that's no excuse.
This almost makes me want to see their faces when they finally realise that I am a woman and that "kicking me in the nuts" doesn't work.
I sometimes have acome across the males that demand my pic but since my gaming profile has a link to my site (with respectful pic) they soon shut up and start being nice.
I agree that it has a lot to do with maturity. People my age don't give two craps that I'm of the feminine gender. The little boys that fawn over me get the contempt they deserve. Harsh I know but the either learn to respect their fellow gamers or they get highly ostracised
Adware doesn't always require the action of clicking with the mouse. I've had adware attacking me even without clicking on ads. Often cookies are used now to allow the adware to download itself at a set date/time. With more people being perma-connected to the net this is becoming more common.
Another example is the dialler program. That just infects random people. I saw this happen to a very good friend of mine. They were surfing their Yahoo mail and they got hit by a dialler. They just find a random IP online and eeny-meeny-miny-mo that one.
It's not always the fault of the user. The people who make this are always coming up with new ways to get their crap onto your machine.
P.S. I would personally like to get my hands on someone like this and stick their gender in a blender. Then hit the on button and enjoy the Symphony of Sweet Revenge - Movement 1, the screams of the wicked
I'm a designer. It's my job to design. To design you must be able to feel what the client wants from talking to them. The client doesn't always know what they want. When they do it's often a big bonus and help.
To feel you must have emotions. To stifle emotions would be to stifle the design. If the design was stifled then every site would look the same.
Anyways even out of a designing environment, emotions are the result of a cause. Sadness happens because something sad happened like a death in the family, Anger happens because someone did something rude like nearly t-bone you on a roundabout.
To effectively deal with emotions you must deal with the root cause. This is where medicine is going wrong. If you're not sleeping right it's usually because something is praying on your mind. Instead of the doctor finding out what is bugging you they shove pills down your throat.
Trust me they do this. It's happened to me and the side effects stank worse then a US state full to bursting point with fresh manure.
Please excuse the length of this post but that is why emotions are so important.
Microsoft are just managing to upset gamers again. I can't remember my source but Japan's famous big 3 gaming stores refused to sell Xbox after Microsoft dishonourably refused to replace disks that where faulty on sale.
If they keep this up they will end up annoying the biggest gaming sector of all. The Rising Sun burns brighter then the setting sun.
Also after having held an Xbox pad I hold few hopes for the 360 if that controller's going to be as big as it's predecessor.
Just because this guy sent x amount of emails it doesn't take away the fact that he destroyed a computer network infrstructure, which can be applied as criminal damage. That can be recompensed by the criminal for replacing the equipment and lost revenue.
On a similar note, some berk's managed to ping my website into submission so that it cannot be view for the rest of the month. If I ever find who did it then there will be serious hell to pay.
OK the person who wrote that article couldn't design if their life depending on it. I've been gaming since I was a very little girl. I'm now 24 and still play games and online games. Most people don't care for the fact that I'm a woman. It's the minority of idiot pre pubescent teens that start the drooling or treating me like an idiot.
I just ignore them. As for the sorts of games that I play I love RPGs, the cute Japanese puzzle games, MMORPGs, Action/adventure, and other puzzle games. I also love games like Mario Kart, Monkey Ball, and Dynasty Warriors. I play games either becuase I love the storyline and gameplay or becuase I can pick them up and have some fun as a means to kill my time.

Seriously if a bank wants to do business with me it should send me a letter written by a Human not some email composed by a machine.
My spam filter catches a lot of this junk and even if I had no spam filter I'd just delete them anyways as I don't trust them.
I'm not normal that's the point. I suffer from a mental illness myself and I'm not going on any killing sprees.
I bet if you look at these kids who do the shootings both parents are at work all the time and either aren't paying attention to their kid's misery or just don't care. This all looks and sounds like a pile of steaming dog turd. Why else hide behind marketing hype?
Those pictures look very promising as well as getting me in trouble with the bosses for looking at porn. :p
