1. Re:Real significance: Free as in Freedom on Reznor Follows Radiohead, Offers Free Album · · Score: 5, Insightful

Someone mod this up. This is nothing like Radiohead's release. Reznor is providing high quality tracks under a non-commercial CC license in addition to a bunch of buying options. Radiohead was just dicking around, this is exactly how it should be done. Reznor himself put it on the Pirate Bay, preempting and silencing the whole piracy debate in one fell swoop.

The man is a genius. This more than anything signifies the end of the known music industry and it's about time.

  2. You don't seem to understand how this works on W3C Publishes First Public Working Draft of HTML 5 · · Score: 1

DOCTYPES tell a browser how to render content. Provided you use the HTML 4 doctype, your site will still render exactly the same as it did before. If you switch to the HTML 5 doctype, then it will read the document as HTML 5 and omit the redundant tags that have absolutely no place in HTML. It's not CSS's lack of object alignment that you're having difficulty with, it's a browsers lack of implementation of the CSS 2.1 spec. In this case it's IE which really should have been put down some time ago. If you actually use td align and text-align to position elements (you called them "boxes") in IE, you should strongly re-evaluate your occupation because no one with significant knowledge on the subject builds sites like that anymore. If you have similar issues with other browsers than I strongly suggest you read up on quirks mode and start using a doctype. Also check out CSS Zen Garden so you can see what CSS is really capable of.

Considering my laptop would be the most expensive item I could bring with me on a trip, just the mere thought of them confiscating it and all the data I have on it (which is easily worth more than the cost of the laptop to me) is terrifying. I'm sure this doesn't happen often, but they better have a damn good reason to take away something that valuable. i.e. more than circumstantial evidence.

Zack and Wiki is amazing. I don't even typically like adventure games, but the ways they make you use the wiimote to interact with your environment is downright awesome. More people need to buy this game because it really isn't selling the way it should.

MP3 was an excellent game and I hope to see more titles like it in the future. Mario Galaxy is on my xmas list as I already have way too many Wii games to play.

In short, yes I think you made a mistake. I don't regret for a second purchasing my Wii. It made console gaming enjoyable again, and it's got mario bros. 3 :)

  6. I'm glad I stood in line at launch too on Why You Can't Find a Wii for Christmas · · Score: 2, Funny

I remember feeling kind of silly waiting in line for a Wii. "There will be lots more" I was thinking... but I got mine on launch and then the demand only increased. My older brother wanted to get one for his family for Christmas, and he spent the next month trying to acquire one, even missing work on several occasions to do it.

The same people saying the demand for the Wii is imaginary are most likely the same people that called the Wii a fad. Aren't fads supposed to fade out? or am I missing something here?

Building good software shouldn't be a publicity stunt.

  8. Re:The Wii is a christmas fad on Will Wright Opines That Wii Is the Only Next-Gen Console · · Score: 1

I skipped the last console generation because nothing really interested me. Over the years I've owned a Coleco, an Atari, Sega Genesis, N64 and done a lot of PC gaming. When the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube came out, I pretty much lost all interest in console gaming. Everything just felt the same with a new coat of paint and there were much better games on the PC. The Wii changed that for me. Yes there's going to be a low attach rate for casual gamers, but to be fair no one outside of Nintendo is really putting anything good out on the Wii. If every developer keeps putting out shitty ports and mini-game collections, of course no one is going to buy anything!

That said, I currently own Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil 4, Rayman: Raving Rabbids, Zelda (TTP) and Mario Strikers. By the end of Christmas I'll likely own Mario Galaxy, Zak and Wiki, and whatever else might catch my fancy (Battalion Wars 2 looks intriguing).

I'm really curious how you came to the conclusion that diminishing Wii sales would give the gamers more choice and lower prices. Wii games and the console are at a lower price point than MS and Sony. The wiimote creates potential for a whole new breed of games and ways to interact with entertainment.

If the Wii isn't your type of console, that's fine but don't spread FUD like "no one is happy with it!" I think it's great and it definitely has a much better catalogue of games than the PS3 which has yet to produce a game I might actually want to play. The install base for the Wii is huge and the problem is developers who don't know how to make good games that people want to play, not the people buying the console.

    This isn't the case.

The fact of the matter is Photoshop's UI and functionality is infinitely superior to that of the gimp and no amount of whining from open source fanboys will get designers who make a living off this kind of software to switch over to something which is, to put lightly, gimped.
  10. I don't understand the hate on Too Human Drops Cloak Of Mystery · · Score: 3, Interesting

Silicon Knights made Eternal Darkness, quite possibly one of the most unique and interesting games to grace last generation's consoles. The idea of Norse mythology playing out in a futuristic setting is an interesting one and leaves a lot of room for creative and unique story telling. I can't fathom why everyone has this inbound hatred for a game that seems like an excellent concept and will most likely go down in history as one of those oddball gems, much akin to Eternal Darkness.

Oh come on now. The Wii launched with Wii Sports and Zelda. Both kept me busy for the first month (in fact Wii Sports still gets plenty of play time) and Excite Truck is still stupid fun. Then there was a bit of a dry spell, followed by Mario Strikers and Metroid Prime 3 with Super Mario Galaxy and SSBM on the way. Everyone bought the Wii knowing there would be some great console exclusives from Nintendo (like there always are) and if Metroid is any indication, they're already delivering on this promise. The 360 definitely has a larger catalogue, but it's all the same games played the same way for the past 4 - 6 years. As much as people want to claim the wiimote is a gimmick, that gimmick functions incredibly well in Metroid and makes it a newer and more interesting experience.

Everyone else keeps doing shitty ports, or inane and uninteresting games like Boogie or EA Playground. I want heavily involved games for the hardcore like Metroid Prime 3, I want simple and fun group games like Wii Sports.

Why is no one but Nintendo able to produce a game worth buying on the Wii right now?

I hear developers/publishers whining about the Wii not having sufficient hardware and it being previous generation and whatever else, but I'm not interested in PS3 or Xbox; just like a lot of other gamers out there. I have money, I want to buy Wii games from more than just Nintendo. Make some!

Every day it seems more and more like publishers and developers are completely missing the point and Nintendo is just eating up the market everyone else wants to pretend isn't there.

I have owned a Wii, with two wiimotes since launch and have had zero problems. I don't even understand how you could break the strap unless you were using the device completely inappropriately.

I wish there was some way to hold you, the lawyers, accountable for such blindingly foolish lawsuits that are driven by greed rather than valid and ethical complaints that result in injury, damage or loss of property.

I do this sort of thing all the time (make mockups in Photoshop and then create the HTML and CSS for them). The only form elements you really need to be worried about is radio buttons and check boxes because you can't style them by normal means. Everything else, design the way you want to. Also, I'd recommend getting away from Linux, GIMP and pretty much any open source piece of design software if you see yourself doing a lot of this kind of work. Linux isn't designer friendly and open source design software isn't even in the same league as professional design tools. I'm sure a lot of people here won't agree on that point, but they're also the same people that will (falsely) proclaim GIMP to be a valid substitute for Photoshop. Don't get me wrong, I love open source, but it's not up to par in the design world.
