Keygen is something else entirely, but for example, should Google be filtering results because you searched:

    "ServersCheck Crack Me Up"

I know it's silly, but it's a legitimate search with serverscheck that has the word crack in it. So now I could not see a site that, say, legally criticized the ServersCheck company?

I can see why "keygen" is tough, because I can't think of many legitimate uses for either that, or warez or something... but really, while they may HAVE the tech to monitor and filter, that doesn't mean they can really do it. Or that they can do it with typical Google quality.

  2. Re:Forgetting About Blu-Ray on Lower-Price PS3 Mostly Upgradeable · · Score: 1

I'm not forgetting about it. But if the point of having a Blu-Ray drive is to watch HD-DVDs, then why have a drive in a system that wouldn't output the full richness of that format?

It's like saying: "This car engine will get you to 200MPH! But unless you buy the $60,000 version, you only get to use the first 75MPH! But it's the same engine! Yay!"

Really, I know the drive is in there, and that makes the cost. But come on... what's the point of a permanently under-used drive for a high cost? In that case, get the 360! It's the same thing, but without the high-priced drive, ya know? And yes, if you want the drive later, you can pay the high cost (which you are right, will surely be high), and get the same functionality of the higher cost system. But IMO, it's not selling you something for more money than they have to, for something ENTIRELY upgradeable, as opposed to something permanently disabled.

  3. The truth on Lower-Price PS3 Mostly Upgradeable · · Score: 5, Insightful

The truth here is that Sony has made a mis-step. First of all, they've got time to work on a better core system. However, if the only real thing driving the price from the core to the super-duper is the Blu-Ray Drive, then they should have exact same specs, but with no HDMI output.

I mean, I can understand that.

But to have other things crippled too? Lower hard drive (by that little amount of gig space) is not going to affect the price that much. And if you're losing near $400-500 per unit already, what's another $50?

But really, there's no excuse to not have the other bells and whistles, when WE KNOW that the reason for the cost justification is that HDMI output stuff. THAT'S the cost (well, at least 80% of it.) So I can justify that a little more. But the upgrades will likely be like the 360's where it will cost more to upgrade piece by piece than it would to buy the higher priced system. To have that, WITHOUT the ability to ever do HD graphics(which, IMO, is what next-gen is about, at least for Sony and MS), well, it's just sub-par.

I am NOT a fanboy of any of the three systems (actually I really liked the Turbo Grafix 16 back in the day :)) but Sony really is making some hardcore mistakes that will cost them in the long run in the gaming division.

I don't think they're out of business by ANY stretch of the words, but between the loss of rumble (for a less than stellar motion sensor) in the controllers, the price, and the lack of TRUE functionality on the core system, they're going to piss a lot of loyal customers off, enough to check out other systems (or at least NOT buy the PS3).

While I see what you're saying, I would humbly disagree. While I don't think Sony got a hold of the Wiimote and directly stole ideas, I do think that their corporate espionage peeps (and every tech company has them) heard that the Wii would have motion sensing capabilities. They interpreted that in a way that would work with their controller, and we have what we have.

The differences lie in the fact that Nintendo did much more than conventional motion sensing (as in tilt sensing like previous Nintendo efforts), and did something more multifuncitonal. That, in essense, caught Sony with its hand in the cookie jar, because they look silly with a less-functional motion sensing controller, when they were trying to compete.

  7. What needs to happen on More Oblivion Re-Rating Fallout · · Score: 2, Interesting

is that the ESRB has to convene and decide to have an extra rating modifier of some sort to not only describe the game as shipped, but to have a rating for "possible modification" and for "online gameplay".

Statements of this sort already exist in a small sentence on most online games, where they'll state "Online Gameplay Experience May Be Different" or something (I don't recall the exact wording.) But the point is that ESRB would be much more effective with something like this.

I don't think developers and publishers will have a problem with that rating, and the ESRB gets all the info they want out there to cover their butts. I mean, to have something like "ONR" for Online Content Not Rated or something so parents can see that you cannot strictly regulate what happens or is said or written during online play, or a "MNR" for Modifications Not Rated.

It takes care of every instance of these types of issues. Developers and Publishers can know that their game will be rated as "intended" and ESRB gets to put in notices regarding the possibility of (or known issues regarding) more "mature content" in online or modded play.

Normally I wouldn't chime in to just say "I agree" but in this case, I feel it is entirely merited...

I enjoy Zonk's stories, even when they're often not 'amazing' or '100% final fact', usually because with games especially, there's so much rumor and not fact, when a game comes out. I mean, being a gamer means you realize that development schedules and deadlines change constantly, and therefore not a whole lot is released about a game, and not much is really "certainly" known until release. Therefore, no, there's not a whole lot of "news" but there's definitely a lot to report on, and therefore, I enjoy what Zonk brings to the table for the Games side of things. 13. Open Letter to Microsoft on Xbox 360 Doesn't Want To Be Hardcore · · Score: 0, Troll

    Dear Microsoft,
In my opinion, and the opinion of many other gamers out there, the reason we came to the Xbox instead of the Playstation 2 was due to the fact that we were sick of children's consoles. We wanted something with more meat, something with more substance and that tracked with us as a growing gamer generation. Xbox did that superbly. And when the Xbox Live service came out, we were overjoyed! This is the type of thing that will separate the consoles and ensure that Microsoft has a legacy.

This is why you have a significant market share. This is why you have a fanbase and loyal consumers. You create high-end hardware that caters to the needs and desires of hardcore gamers, as well as lifelong gamers, in a way that Playstation (even the new one) will have to catch up to for a long time. You've made significant strides. Stop with the crap now. Stop saying you want to appeal to everyone. If you appeal to everyone, you appeal to no one.

I'll repeat that for you, so you can send this in a memo to everyone on the dev teams... If you appeal to everyone, you appeal to no one.

So, from one gamer who would like to stay loyal to the Xbox side of gaming (you know, when I can actually buy a 360...), stick to what you do best: Making quality hardware, consistently delivering a perspective in gaming that is not middlin-ground, but instead for the lifelong gamer, and most importantly, don't compare your product to other consoles. One is there because it was original first. Sony. Another is there because it caters to kids. Nintendo. You must find another niche. You build it, and we will come. People will come aboard when they see something they can't get anywhere else.
But if you get into a war of competing consoles all doing the same things, from the same perspective of "we develop for all ages, and all levels of gaming dedication" then you lose the hardcore. The hardcore are who do anything to get a console on launch day. The hardcore are who protect your bottom line when you produce crappy launch titles. The hardcore are those who will buy the system, knowing that something better will come down the pipe, once developers get used to the architecture of the system. Don't screw them or they'll screw you.

    Thank you,
    Dorkmaster

*The only thing I would reccomend for the second incarnation is to get as many "actual" performers to do the songs, or at least the vocals, as possible. It's the only drawback to the original, and would REALLY make the 2nd game so much cooler.

Either way, even if just comparable to standard transplants, this is an amazing step forward. But can you imagine the possibilities if the organ lasts as long as a freshly made natural organ? Lifespans would shoot upward, and terminal organ diseases would disappear quickly. Good to see we're headed that way.

  19. That's the old-school way of thinking... on Will Wright's Dream Machines · · Score: 1

While what you're saying is true in a macro sense, the truth is that games are becoming more evolutionary in their gameplay. Spore, while being a forefront leader (from what all accounts are saying) uses other-player-created-content to populate the worlds you create. Therefore, no developer had to design your world. You and friends did it on the fly.

Think of it like a big box of Legos. A developer needs to make the Legos and needs to make them interoperate (put the nubbins and the spaces in them to link), but does not need to create every possible variation of construction, to have an entirely malleable game. It's just a matter of the more pieces you create with interoperability, the larger and more diverse that player created content can become and unique to each user.

The entire point of Will's article is exactly the opposite of what you've written. The old-school way was to say "you can do and go and interact with what I've created only. Otherwise we get off track and potentially buggy." But now, developers are starting to get the idea that players really dig doing their own thing. Crafting in MMORPGS, user-created content in the Sims, and now, with Spore, it's this whole "we give you the pieces, you build the worlds" idea.

In terms of game design, it's really much more radical of a notion than ever created before. I think he's a genius actually, whether or not Spore works well. This is definitely the direction of much of Gaming right now, and he's one of the forefathers of this idea that the player's imagination can lead design.

Just allow me to clarify, however. I totally understand the value in raising public awareness. However, almost anyone will say that they recognize that civil liberties are infringed with the Patriot Act. But they can't do a damn thing about it. In fact, the way our system of government DOES work (whether you hate it or not) is by choosing representatives to sit in congress that you feel will promote your brand of justice, your brand of what is right, and your brand of liberty.

If you don't like who's in office, then vote. Stop whining. Stop trying to be ironic. Stop trying to "rally the people" because all you're doing is making noise (and no, not you Slashdotters, I'm speaking in general. Although we do tend to make a lot of noise).

I guess I'm just sick of people complaining, without using the system we already have in place, to effect change. The reason the system is broken now, is because of mass ignorance of the process. If people in general really hated Bush, then how did he get elected? Because those who did hate Bush didn't get out to vote. If people hate the patriot act, then you should call your congressman/woman today, and tell them that you WILL NOT VOTE for them again, should they side with the Patriot Act. Trust me, enough people do that, they'll listen. They want votes. They want money, but without the votes, the money means nothing. They'll come around.
