    My 74 year old have been using Ubuntu for 4 years now, with a minimum of fuss. The only time I've had to help out was because of a hardware failure.

    It's exactly whats he wants. In a shared Windows environment, it beats the native Outlook search speed handily and covers my organization's shared drive. Actually, the search speed has saved my a few times in being able to reconstruct a problem and react accordingly.

    Installed Debian testing on an old Dell and only had dial up at the time. Of course the Winmodem didn't work, so that meant a custom compile and fighting with getting a driver installed from Linuxant. AA lot of struggle and learning involved, but how do I keep the damn thing updated without tying up my phone line every evening? Through the magic of cron, pon, poff, I automagically had the it updating itself at 3 AM every day.

    Wheeeh! The kids today have it easy.

    Not sure if it is true in 2009, but 4 years ago: Many, many medical and nursing students were required to have a Palm for running some handy med-apps.
