Wile I'll probably buy the core rules right when they come out, I will not buy anything else.

Unfortunately my setting of choice is Eberron (just ordered City of Stormreach too) and I won't see jack for this setting until who knows when in '09. I guess I can feel happy that I didn't sink a lot of money into source books... Maybe $150 to $200 for all the Eberron source books. I bought most of my collection from the Amazon.com market place for almost nothing due to having small remainder marks on the bottom of the spine. But, I feel slighted that I won't see anything other than a coffee table book (An Adventurer's Guide to Eberron) for what will probably be well over a year.

For over a decade now you haven't been able to even buy a PC at retail with out Windows being thrown at you. I don't think some people even know that their machine could run with something other than Windows on it. I think for a lot of people they just don't get that a computer doesn't need Windows to work, and that there are a multitude of operating systems out there to be used. But unfortunately we have things like the Mac Vs PC commercials that just reinforce this idea. At least the commercials are entertaining. On a side note: I usually try to have one Linux and one Windows system in my house if possible. My old laptop that I used for business and school ran Linux and the desktop I used for games runs Windows. Unfortunately the laptop bit it hard a few months back... I've been craving my Linux fix too. I bought one of the Gateway P-6931FX laptops to game on, and a week ago a latch broke and I was locked out physically :( I didn't want to do the job myself cause I wanted to keep my warranty intact. In an interview back in march with Sakaguchi he talked about UE3 and Blue Dragon development.

It's very good overall. Support has been outstanding. But the problem is, for example, Epic's Unreal Engine 3. It's developed in English, of course. And unless you've got programmers who can understand English or are bilingual...we've got numerous bilingual staff, programmers who are highly capable of speaking and understanding English, so they can understand the updated information and versions with respect to the development of UE3. But unless you've got programmers who can understand English, they actually can't read the materials. And even though translation takes place, there is a lag. Oftentimes when they read [about] a version, the very version that they read is outdated. So those are some of the challenges associated with the language barrier. That's one area that Microsoft is poor in: documentation. Seems to me with the exception of it being in English, he had good things to say. Obviously you can't expect Epic(or MS in Sakaguchi's opinion) to have full translations of documents ready to go out the door when new code and features are done. But damn, if you've seen Blue Dragon and Lost Oddyssey you can tell Mist Walker has worked some magic with that engine. IMO, SK just wants to bitch! Too Human has been in development for how long... almost a decade? I don't think there is an inadequacy with the UE3 here, it's SK that has problems.

My mother (being the nice person she is) got me a PSP through her work's reward program a few weeks back. And, while I have a DS to tote around my college campus, I'm loving the PSP. For being a portable system the games have great graphics and music. The down side, most of the UMDs for games I've tried don't seem to have file placement optimized very well. You can hear the system constantly accessing information and having to search the disc. Add the constantly start and stop of the disc drive to the short battery life and you get the biggest downside of the PSP system and the UMD format. 6 hours of battery life is the most I've gotten out of my PSP, when I can definitely say my DS can get around 15 hours. I use my portable systems as a way to pass time between classes when I may only have a half hour to do something, not enough to start on homework or read a chapter and remember it. The PSP battery just isn't reliable enough for me. The DS I can close and put into sleep mode, open it after class and pretty much be sure I can play even after a long week of use. The PSP on the other hand I either have to turn it off and go through all the BS to start it back up, or leave it in sleep and hope the battery doesn't die(which it has done already).

I will have to say, I'm quite impressed with the format itself. It's small, fairly easy to carry, and from what I understand holds about as much info as a GameCube disc. It's the system, it's lack luster battery life, and the horrible disc optimization I'm not to impressed with.

in fact really liked it when it was first released. I even bought an XBox360 controller to use with the game because of how much it really was an action game. My point was that DDO and GW are two different games. The OP was stating that DDO was a fee based Guild Wars, which it isn't and because of its action RPG nature will never be. I was also making out the point that DDO is horribly reliant on stats and items. GW isn't. So comparing the two really can't be done. I've always looked at Guild Wars in that it almost has a Diablo feel to it(probably because heck the people that made it worked for Blizzard before the started Arena.Net), but GW was never about stats or items. DDO unfortunately is, to use a term in the Eberron campaign book, a Monty Haul game at its core. It will always be about PCs having grossly over powered equipment to be able to get by in the end game, it still was when Turbine let old subscribers come back for a weekend in March. I have been playing GW casually for almost a year, and not once have I ran into an outright bump in the road like you can in DDO... 4th Vault of Night quest, Inevitable, no armor-penetrating weapons, 4 hours of your life wasted because you cannot kill an Inevitable without bypassing it's armor and regen.

And please note, not once did I mention CoV, Wow, or LoTRO. I was talking about GuildWars which has no grinding, no standing in a field waiting for monsters to spawn so you can kill them, no digging for ore or searching for flowers. In fact the game is entirely instanced just like DDO and it came out a year before it.

  18. Re:Try better competitors, to start. on Beating WoW At Its Own Game · · Score: 1

D&D Online is basically a Guild Wars with a monthly fee

Besides the fact that everything is instanced in both games I fail to see any other point of comparison. Maybe the fact that Guild Wars goes up to level 20 as its cap and DDO will be there eventually, but that would be pushing it.

DDO and GW are by far two different games, I know this. I played DDO for about six months right when it was released and I've been playing GW since last June. DDO is a very stat based, hack and slash, action RPG. Stats play so much into how it was made that if you hadn't built your character exactly so that a specific stat could be increased to 25 by use of items, magic, potions some guilds wouldn't even take you because you couldn't run end game. The end game content(well end game when I was playing, Vault of Night to be specific) was also so reliant on the equipment that you had it was impossible to even finish without having anti-death and armor-penetrating items, both of which were near impossible to find unless you could grind one specific quest line 24/7. GW on the other hand comes down to two things: Your own skill in the game, and the ability to use the 8 skills on your bar effectively. Character builds are not static as they are in DDO(yes, DDO has enhancement to alleviate the static nature of D&D character builds, but when I was playing enhancements didn't really help), and builds can be changed when you wish in any town. DDO is all about power gaming, it's truly a D&D campaign gone wrong with horrible imbalances in its core design. Your PC is either horribly over powered or horribly underpowered. GW, while it has portions that just ask for power gamers such as Hero Battles, is a game that isn't dependent on the items your character has(except the first campaign where you have to get your armor to have a special attribute, but that was easy to do) and the end game can be done by just about anyone as long as you are smart enough to create a viable build that works for your style of play and can play as a team.

I haven't played XII yet, but seriously I'm not too sure I want to drop $50 on a game I'll play once like I have most of the other FFs in the last decade. And honestly, FF XIII is looking to be nothing more than eye-candy, and there is no way I will buy a PS3 just for one game I may or may not enjoy.

I honestly wish Square-Enix would go back to some of their other franchises. How long has it been since Square made Rad Racer? The Chrono series has just been sitting there idle, and while Cross was decent I'm still waiting for a sequel in true faith to the original. And, dare I say it, what happened to Secret of Evermore?
