Any mod that doesn't read the instructions should not get mod points again (not each time, but at least once). Educating a bad moderator is never off-topic & while at the starting 1 point, certainly not overrated.
Now, please mod me down just like you did the parent so as to take away another of your mod points, you obviously can't be trusted with them. My Karma can take it.
- NOTE TO META-MODERATORS: Please look this one up if modded down, it is in reply to an errant moderator (if you agree with them, please meta that way, though).
Also, btw, my first CD Burner was $500 (HP), external parallel port, 1x & also not super-reliable (lotsa coasters). Ahh, the good ole days. My second was a $400 SCSI a couple years later. It was 8x (Plextor), still not RW.

...Now when DVD burners came out they were going for about $200 tops... Not entirely true. I owned at one time a Terapin VCD Recorder (basically a VCR without a tuner that recorded directly in VCD format to CDs - much like modern stand-alode DVD Recorders, just less reliable). Well, when I ordered it, they accidentally shipped me a DVD Burner instead. When I looked it up on their website, the drive they shipped me was selling for $700-900 (was several years ago, I don't remember exactly). The device I paid for was ~$500. Oops:)
My point: DVD Burners *early* on were more than $200. Sorry for the long story:)
I remember when the first computers with DVD-ROM's started showing up, the computers generally had about 200-400MB hard drives. I'm pretty sure you meant CD-ROM, so I won't nitpick, but remember *right* before then. That same 200-400MB drive (I had a 400MB drive when I had my first 1x CD made [a backup of the 400MB drive - cost me $10:) ]) took ~130-260 HD-FDDs. My current setup is 2x200GB & 2x320GB HDDs, takes about 125 DL-DVDs or 225 SL-DVDs.
BTW: When DVD-ROMs started showing up, most of us had HDDs much bigger than them, IIRC.
Again, it doesn't take into account where you live. I am currently in the top 8.6% and planning a move to Texas where I expect to be about 3.6% so that I can buy a house, settle down (I already have a wife + kids). We can get by o.k. on top 3.6%. We won't be wealthy, but in another year our only debt should be our house & car & the car will be paid off another year or so behind.
Now, in CA I'm sure I'd have to live in a hole-in-the-wall apt on a measly 38,500/yr, but in Ft Worth, TX we'll be alright.
Course, I don't have a big-screen, PSanything, etc.
Akin to this I use my personal domain (not the one on my/. acct). It is set up so that *@[my domain] delivers to my gmail acct anyway, so my amazon email address is amazon@[my domain], and all other sites I visit are [their address]@[my domain]
When spam starts hitting one (ex: efax likes to spam me), I simply create a filter or redirect that particular address elsewhere.
Redirect it to their abuse@ & have fun with them:)
If one already owns the hardware (I assume most of us do), does it really take up a lot of space to store everything electronically? I am about to move (out of state), when I do I intend to get a safe deposit box (~$15/yr) that I will store either DVDRs or a portable HDD that I plan to swap out every month.
In case of fire, flood, etc I will only be out up to a month worth of data... since I will only back up data, I can read it pretty much anywhere on pretty much any hardware.
(No, I will not be living in a hurricane/earthquake prone area)
Careful, the first post that criticized Linux got modded offtopic for being contrary to groupthink. You will probably be the only person to see this warning as it will surely be down modded as well 5 seconds after clicking Submit.
Looks like someone shouldn't have mod points.

Except in this case, DRM makes Yourtube Our(the networks')Tube
That doesn't make your post less funny, though.
This may be the most beautiful thing I have ever read.
May I vote for you?

Just a few thoughts.
No, in the US clocks go forward with 9 coming after 8.
:)
I'd find a reference for you but I'm really just a smart a**.
I was getting worried - 5 minutes and no bad car analogy!
Thanks!
This is possibly the best solution I have ever read, kudos!

Your prev post on this thread was modded -1 Troll, still waiting for someone to get around to modding this one.
Boy are *you* gonna regret that comment 90 days after he's elected!

I wonder if we could outfit trucks with this technology ...

You think a /. reader's 5 year collection of porn would fit on 256GB?
You must be new here.
Duke Nukem Forever
(That is if I live that long)
13 dwarves? Let's see, Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Sneezy, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet & Cupid?
Wasn't there a Blitzen too, or was he an elf?

-1 mods follow a whoooshing sound
until I saw this: "'It's a battle for eyeballs,'"
That's just wrong.
Has Netcraft confirmed it?
Nevermind, apparently I didn't even RTFS :)
Feel free to mod me into oblivion.
