The idea that there is no room for private insurance with a public option is ludicrous. I live in Australia where we have Medicare. This allows anybody to get treatment for most things but has a very long queue for elective surgery. The private insurance companies allow you to use the private hospitals to jump the queue in the public version. Also private health cover in Australia will allow you to charge for 'extras' such as Physiotherapy, Chiropractor and alternate medicines (acupuncture etc). The government has also introduced a levy on high income earners that they have to pay towards medicare if they do not have insurance.
I am not sure how the USA is going about the introduction of public option but the public and private options can definitely co-exist.
How do you know he has not done this already?
My wife and I just installed a set of solar panels and to assist in electricity reduction we have ensured our house is fully insulated, have also had our roof restored and painted lighter colour (we live in a hot climate) and are now saving to install double glazed windows.
With the Australian governments 8000 AUD rebate we calculated that with the savings in usage it was still a good return on investment. Additionally in Australia the government has mandated a 40c/kW payment by electricity companies (so I get more tax dollars back) and the company I am with will pay the same as the charge me (19c/kW) on top of that.
Also we worked out that it changes your usage habit we turn everything off at home during the day except for the fridge.
Whats more, the teachers over-priced book as required reading
You will find that it is the publishers that price the books and it is usually priced on how many will sell. Unfortunately textbooks for universities don't sell very many copies. Thus the higher price.
Because that is how the Australian filter started as a optional porn filter at ISP level. It then got additional filters to get voted through parliment which included a two tier level first tier mandatory for "illegal sites" and a second optional tier for "child unfriendly sites".
Unfortunately the mandatory site list keeps getting longer.
I know US politics is different but it is noted that you do get a lot of ammendments to your bills too.
I must say I laughed so hard I think I could write an article on that website about what happened.
Thankyou for the most entertaining/. comment I have ever read.
appealed to the public's common sense Never heard of this what is it? Even so just because the public are using it for entertainment purposes this is no less important than business use. If these people are paying the same amount then they should have equal use. If business are paying more and the contracts (to ISPs) specify selective throttling then I have no problem. But I know that my ISP has no signed contract with me that allows them to put other customer's needs before mine. Make no mistake whether big business or home user they are both customers and should be treated equally.
I think it is pathetic to say that big business internet usage is more important than that of a home user. I for one work from home and my internet usage is closely tied to my pay. So to me it is definitely more important that corporate office people sending chain emails.
I do admit that the curbing of music downloading for personal use may be helpful... but there are musicians who require this for their income as well.
When did acedemia start being a bunch of attention whores? When governments based funding on what sounds good and matches in with the way they think the universe works

See that's why Venice can do this. They don't have to waste taxes on the roads!
They are actually looking at deep packet inspection techniques to allow them to look at the content.

Frozen to death despite living in a dessert.
Only if the dessert was ice cream. If it were a hot apple pie they would hardly be frozen.
Acually it is more like 1. Drink Beer
Australia has tried this and test show the filtering will also slow you down up to 87%. So it will be dial-up speed wi-fi for free.

But is that a Pint of beer or an Imperial Pint of beer?
But if there was more TLC there would be less wars and we wouldn't fight over the TLDs.

I am not an American so I get to ignore that one :) It was also said tongue in cheek.

I wish I could mod you "Scary that it is true"
Can we start with the MySpace users? That would free up a lot of bandwidth and then remove all bloggers....
I prefer the term Extortion the x makes it sound cool - Bender

We can send the unemployed as part of the work for the dole scheme in Australia
